We do have a set of forum rules here but ultimately these are just a basic guide. I've seen one or two users claim loop holes in the rules, but that's not the point. Really it is all about applying some common sense to conduct here.
Please don't swear or bypass the swear filter
I want to keep the forum a welcoming and family-friendly place. We have a tongue-in-cheek word filter which replaces swear words with hockey players' names. I have no problem with people using words that get caught by the filter, but please don't post anything which isn't caught by the filter (please edit your post and remove the offending word if this happens). Please also do not attempt to bypass the filter or use stars to censor out words (just don't say the words in the first place). We have young viewers here as well as people who access the forums from their places of work (including schools) which is another reason we don't allow offensive words here.
Spamming the forums
There are two types of spamming which we're seeing a fair bit of:
1. Posting the same question in multiple threads (presumably in an attempt to get an answer quicker). This will now result in an instant warning (3 warnings = a temporary ban)
2. Advertising a league/website/etc. I used to allow people to advertise their non-EHM hockey leagues in the Competitions and Games Forum but I'm seeing too many people take liberties with this. Recently we had a user sign up and start three threads in different forums on TBL advertising some hockey league. Rather than wasting time policing each advert, I am simply prohibiting any and all adverts (although online EHM leagues can still be posted in the Online EHM Forum subject to these rules). Anybody who spams the site in this way (i.e. by advertising a league/website/etc) will be permanently banned for spamming.
Flooding the forum with posts in order to artificially increase your post count
A while back we introduced a limit whereby only users with 35+ posts can use the Personal Message function in the forum. The reason for this is two-fold:
1. We get a lot of Personal Messages sent to Admins/Mods (mostly from new users) which really ought to be asked in the forum (where they can be answered for the benefit of other users and to remove the burden from the chosen Admin/Mod having to answer the question - we are lucky to have many knowledgeable users who can answer too); and
2. We have encountered a number of occasions where new users have abused the Personal Message system by attempting to send forum-wide Personal Messages to advertise something.
Similarly, there is a 35+ post limit for users who want to post new threads in the EHM Online Forum as we have had many users who sign up simply to advertise their own site, etc without making any contribution to the forum (and hence our blanket ban on advertising leagues/websites/etc as mentioned above under "Spamming the forums").
We have recently encountered a couple of instances where users have flooded the forum with useless posts in order to quickly achieve the 35 post threshold. This isn't really within the spirit of posting on our forums and is not all that dissimilar from spamming. We don't want to put off anybody from posting, but we will be issuing warnings to any user that constantly makes inane posts which makes it reasonably apparent that the intention is to boost their post count to the 35 threshold (or such other threshold that is set from time to time).
Users that need to communicate about volunteering to be a TBL Roster Researcher can post HERE and those looking to sign-up for the online leagues can post HERE without the need to use Private Messages. If something absolutely cannot be discussed via the forums then we suggest using email if you do not have access to Personal Messages. In very exceptional circumstances, we will grant early access to Personal Messaging - just sent an email to email@example.com with the reason why Personal Message access is needed.
