Montreal Canadiens : 2027 and after

Postby cecede123 » Sat Dec 02, 2017 7:05 pm

It's October 13, 2027. In the center of the ice at the Bell Center, three players are standing and looking into the ceiling of the arena. The Carey Price jersey climbs quietly upwards, to the applause of the 21,273 spectators in the stands. Along with Carey Price are also two new retirees, who have played last year with the Habs: Jordan Staal and Alexander Ovechkin. Ovy had been introduced to the Hall of Fame earlier this summer, which has surpassed the magical mark of 894 career goals in his penultimate match in career. He finished his career with 895 goals and 1702 points. But back to the main interest, Carey Price. He too was inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer. He had spent his entire career with Canadiens. He had finished his career with 675 wins, and 74 shutouts. He will have rewritten several pages in the NHL's record book. Beside them, the captain of Canadian Max Pacioretty seems very emotional. At 38, he told reporters before the game that this season may be his last in his career. Although his offensive qualities are still present, he now has more difficulties in terms of speed and his cardio. This match against the Minnesota Wild was therefore an emotional match. It's with a 6-3 victory that the Carey Price night ended.

Since Marc Bergevin was relieved of his duties at the start of the 2017 season, Canadians have always participated in the playoffs. They won the Stanley Cup in 2023, and lost in the final in the 2019, 2020 and 2027 seasons. Now, let's move on to the Canadiens Depth Chart for the 2027-2028 season.

GOALIES
There was a big chair to fill after Carey Price retired to the goalkeeping position. It's a young duo that will start the season.

1. Jack O'Brien, 23 years old (Manitoba, Canada)
Acquired : Via trade with Detroit in July 2026, drafted #25 in 2022 by Detroit, 1.14 millions per year
Last season : With Laval in the AHL, 20-7-9, 2.11 and .910, with 5 shutouts
Relatively a small goalie, the young man will have his first chance as a starter in the NHL. He have a Calder Cup final behind his chest.

2. Jakub Skarek, 27 years old (Czech Republic)
Acquired : Signed as a free agent in July 2027, drafted #9 in 2018 by Florida, 2.25 millions per year
Last season : With the Panthers, 30-18-8, 2.80 and .888, with 2 shutouts
Signed as an insurance policy, the former 1st pick have already 103 wins in the big league, with an impressive 28 shutouts.

3. Kaid Bedard, 23 years old (Michigan, USA)
Acquired : Drafted #112 in 2022 by Montréal, 575 000 per year
Last season : With Laval in the AHL, 30-8-1, 1.89 and .919, with 4 shutouts
The starting goaltender in Laval, he was planned to start the season in Montreal, but the signing of Skarek changed the plans. He was named in the AHL rookie All-Star team last year.

4. Ola Holmqvist, 20 years old (Sweden)
Acquired : Drafted #18 in 2025 by Montréal, unsigned
Last season : With Orebro in the SHL, 13-7-10, 2.79 and .889, with 0 shutouts
Our first pick in 2025, the small goalie will play a last season in Sweden this year, before joigning Laval Squad next year. He has 2 bronze medal and 1 silver medal in the U20 WJC.

DEFENSEMEN
Montréal have a solid defensive core, mainly because of the strong drafting in this position in the past years.

1. Vitaly Belozyorov, 27 years old, 6.1ft, 205lbs, LD (Russia)
Acquired : Drafted #57 in 2018 by Montréal, 2.8 millions per year
Last season : With Montréal, 0-25-25, +29.
A good second round pick in 2018, Belozyorov was the real Andrei Markov successor. An exellent passing guy, he was named to the first all-star team in his lone AHL season, before being named on the All-rookie team in the NHL the next season. He won an Olympic Bronze medal in 2026.

2. Timo Halonen, 26 years old, 5.11ft, 200lbs, LD (Finland)
Acquired : Drafted #30 in 2019 by Montréal, 2.5 millions per year
Last season : With Montréal, 5-32-37, +23.
Despite having a slower start in the NHL than Belozyorov, he really had a breakout season in his fourth in the league. He was first spotted has a setup guy with great passing, he can score goals as well. He has two silver medal in the WJC and an Olympic gold medal in 2026. He is one of the few french speaker of the team.

3. John Klingberg, 35 years old, 6.1ft, 180lbs, RD-LD (Sweden)
Acquired : Via trade with Dallas in 2020. Drafted #131 in 2010 by Dallas, 6.5 millions per year
Last season : With Montréal, 9-47-56, +25.
He was involved in the biggest trade since the Subban one. Montreal shipped pending UFA Galchenyuk and aging Shea Weber to Dallas in 2020 in exchange of Klingberg and Radulov. He has multiple seasons over 50 points.

4. Anthony Hamel, 25 years old, 5.9ft, 196lbs, RD (Québec,Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #61 in 2020 by Montréal, 1 million per year
Last season : With Montréal, 0-6-6, -18
The only Quebecer presently in the main roster, the small dman had a rough year last season. His technical abilities are great tho. He could have a breakout season this year.

5. Thomas Bartos, 24 years old, 6.9ft, 253lbs, LD-RD (Slovakia)
Acquired : Drafted #56 in 2021 by Montréal, 700 000 per year
Last season : With Montréal, 0-5-5, -28
A tall defensemen build in the mold of Zdeno Chara, he had a season like Anthony Hamel last year. He is mainly a shotdown guy with a nice slapshot.

6. Jet Woo, 27 years old, 6.1ft, 202lbs, RD (Manitoba, Canada)
Acquired : Via trade with Vancouver in 2025. Drafted #8 in 2018 by Vancouver, 4.74 millions per year
Last season : With Montréal, 2-27-29, +23
Acquired in a trade to lower the cap hit of the team, Woo is doing a fine job of top 4 dmen for the Habs. He is a great playmaker who brings an offensive upside.

7. Alexandre Fortin, 23 years old, 6ft, 191lbs, LD (Nova Scotia, Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #90 in 2022 by Montréal, 700 000 per year.
Last season : With Montréal, 0-2-2 in 12 games, +2
Mainly played as a 7th defenseman, he is a great defensive dman, who could use more speed in his game.

Notable prospect

1. Deryck Daoust, 22 years old, 6.1ft, 207lbs, LD (Ontario, Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #41 in 2023 by Montréal, plays with Laval in the AHL
Last season : With Laval, 11-34-45, +32
He was in the AHL All-Star game this past two seasons, he is an offensive Dman, with a top 4 potential

2. Georgis Olson, 23 years old, 6.1ft, 194lbs, LD-RD (Ontario, Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #52 in 2022 by Montréal, plays with Laval in the AHL
Last season : With Laval, 9-29-38 +7
A polyvalent defensemen, he will probably see NHL time this year or the next. He was a big star in Minnesota Duluth, where he played his College hockey. Scout see's him as a top 6 dman.

3. Lionel Marcos, 19 years old, 6.3ft, 180lbs, RD (Québec, Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #76 in 2026 by Montréal, plays with Gatineau in the QJMHL
Last season : With Gatineau, 9-27-36, +1
A solid two-way defensemen, scouts sees him as a future regular for Montreal. He won gold in the last WJC U20

4. Emil Abbott, 18 years old, 6.5ft, 196lbs, RD (Alberta, Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #30 in 2027 by Montréal, plays with Lethbridge in the WHL
Last season : With Lethbridge, 10-32-42, +12
Our first pick in the last draft, the big Albertan is projected to be a first pairing dman. He'll need time, and he'll definitely need to work on his defensive abilities. He is fine on the offensive.

LEFT WING
With the retiring of Alexander Ovechkin and the age of Max Pacioretty, the left-side of the team will have to rely on younger player soon. In the past year, we tried to draft well at this position

1. Philip Kurashev 28 years old, 6ft, 209lbs, LW-RW (Switzerland)
Acquired : Signed as a free agent in the summer of 2027, drafted #20 in 2018 by Tampa Bay, 6.1 millions per year
Last season : With Rangers, 10-17-27 -11.
In a move to renforce the left side of the team, we signed him to a 7 years contract, and planning to build the first line around him. Despite a deceiving season last year, he has three 20 goals seasons. He won the Cup back in 2021, and had been involved in a trade who saw Ryan McDonagh moved from NYR to TBL

2. Joona Viljanen, 25 years old, 5.9ft, 187lbs, LW (Finland)
Acquired : Drafted #92 in 2020 by Montréal, 3.8 millions per year
Last season : With Montréal, 10-14-24, -14.
Mainly played as a third liner and sometimes on the PK, he has an interesting set of offensive abilities to go with his high level of defensive qualities. Scouts compares him to Taylor Hall. He his a two-way forward.

3. Eriah Lamoriello, 24 years old, 5.10ft, 191lbs, LW (Minnesota, USA)
Acquired : Drafted #86 in 2021 by Montréal, 2.3 millions per year
Last season : With Montréal, 8-12-20, -5.
A defensive forward who played on the 4th line and on the penalty kill since joigning the team. He put up good numbers in the AHL, and he has a great pass, and can clearly find you on the ice. He'll see his icetime rise soon.

4. Max Pacioretty, 38 years old, 6.2ft, 213lbs, LW (Connecticut, USA)
Acquired : Drafted #22 in 2007 by Montréal, 8 millions per year
Last season : With Montréal, 34-42-76, + 26
Team captain since I joigned the club in 2017, he now sits at 522 career goals, and 1106 points. He surpassed Henri Richard for the number of games played with the team. His best season was in 2017-2018, where he did 38-53-91 to win the Lady Bing, the King Clancy, the Hart trophy, and named on the 1st All-Star team. He added to his collection the 2024 Conn Smythe, the year we won the cup, and the Lady Bing the very next year. In his journey, he also got nominated as best player of the team 9 times, won the 2020 World Cup and the 2022 gold medal in the Olympics. Finally, he has two 40 goals seasons in career : 44G, 84P in 2023-24 and 43g, 88P in 2025-2026.

5. Tyler Weiss, 27 years old, 6ft, 176lbs, LW-C (North Carolina, USA)
Acquired : Drafted #29 in 2018 by Montréal, 2.8 millions per year
Last season : With Montréal, 18-32-50, -15
The first pick I made in my GM role, he reminded us Max Pacioretty. The two-way forward is not the fastest, but have great technicals habilities. He teared up the AHL, and was the first real star of the new Laval Rockets, with seasons of 72 and 107 points. In the NHL, he hasn't really been consistent, his best season being in 2024-2025, where he had 28-48-76. So far, he scored 354 points in 493 games. He won the Bronze in the 2019 WJC U20. He also won the 2024 Lady Bing trophy, another reason why Montreal's reporters kept comparing the two players.

Notable Prospects

1. Stephen Russell, 22 years old, 6.2ft, 187lbs, LW(Alberta, Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #30 in 2023 by Montréal, plays with Laval in the AHL
Last season : With Laval, 38-36-74, +27
A two-way forward who was a scoring machine in his WHL journey with Portland, and so far, he have 142 points in the AHL. Definitly a long-term project, but he may crack the roster one day.

2. Giancarlo Mahalak, 22 years old, 6.2ft, 178lbs, LW-RW (Illinois, USA)
Acquired : Drafted #61 in 2023 by Montréal, plays with Laval in the AHL
Last season : With Laval, 14-15-29, +21
Scouts sees him as a future 3rd line defensive forward, really fast and with some offensive upside. Another long-term project

3. Marcello Annis, 21 years old, 6.2ft, 220lbs, LW(British Columbia, Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #31 in 2024 by Montréal, plays with Laval in the AHL
Last season : With Laval, 1-1-2+6 in 14 games
A strong power forward, scouts sees him develop in a Max Jones type of player. This year gonna be is first full season as a pro, and we are hungry to see him grow.

4. Dylan Bast, 19 years old, 6.1ft, 194lbs, LW-C(Ontario, Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #73 in 2026 by Montréal, plays with Barrie in the OHL
Last season : With Barrie, 28-36-64, +16
A two-way forward, he has already nice technical habilites for his age. Let see if he will pan out.

5. Jared Wells, 19 years old, 5.11ft, 169lbs, LW-C-RW(Manitoba, Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #67 in 2026 by Montréal, plays with Kootenay in the WHL
Last season : With Kootenay, 34-43-77, +14
He need to muscle up, but he is a nice goal-scorer with 2nd round potential.

CENTER
If something stayed mainly the same over the years I took over the Habs, it's the weakness at center position. Our wings are doing fine, but our center core is not deep.

1. Matthew Barzal, 30 years old, 6ft, 185lbs, C (Brithish Columbia, Canada)
Acquired : Via trade with New York Islanders, drafted #16 in 2015 by Islanders, 3.75 millions per year
Last season : With Montréal, 29-55-84, +31
In a move in July 2024 to save money, Montréal traded Shea Theodore, rights to Guy Sutter and a 1st round pick aquired in an other trade versus Matt Barzal. This trade gives us a real first line center, he was a great set up guy for Max Pacioretty for the last couple of seasons. Beside his 84 points last year, he did 72 points in 2024-25 and 65 in 2025-26. He his also signed to a cheap 3.75 millions per year till 2031-32.

2. Paul Kumpulainen, 27 years old, 5.10ft, 194lbs, C (Finland)
Acquired : Drafted #60 in 2018 by Montreal, 3.30 millions per year
Last season : With Montréal, 15-22-37, +18
A checking forward, he has been a steady fit in our second line since 2022-23. He have great speed, and is also a defensive beast. He reminds me a bit Tomas Plekanec, a responsible, backchecking forward who is capable to put up some points.

3. Logan Brown, 29 years old, 6.6ft, 218lbs, C (Missouri, USA)
Acquired : Signed as a free agent in 2027, drafted #11 in 2016 by Senators, 780 000 per year
Last season : With Edmonton, 10-11-21, -5
We signed him this summer for depth. He's gonna play 4th line minutes this year, and maybe AHL next year if prospects pushes him.

Notable prospects

1. Thierry Payne, 24 years old, 6.1ft, 205lbs, C (Manitoba, Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #87 in 2021 by Montréal, 665 000 per year
Last season : With Laval, 5-8-13, +2
Our call-up guy when there's too many injuries in the main roster, he'll probably make the team next year. A defensive forward, scouts still sees him as a 2nd line potential.

2. Stanislas Besson, 23 years old, 5.11ft, 191lbs, C (Québec, Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #50 in 2022 by Montréal, 970 000 per year
Last season : With Laval, 12-43-55, +12
A two-way forward, definitly a long-term project, who could surprise

3. Ashford Richardson, 18 years old, 6ft, 160lbs, C (Ontario, Canada)
Acquired : Drafted #59 in 2027 by Montréal, unsigned
Last season : With Lindsay of the OJHL : 24-38-62, +14
An intriguing prospect, and all-around player who could develop as a nice 3rd liner in the future. He'll play in Priceton this year.
