Out Again!

Lost to the Islanders in the second round...lost Marleau to injury, and that was costly.
Since I am out, and since I was about to embark on ANOTHER rebuilding process, AND since LIDAS 2.2 is out, I am going to restart the game using the new database.
It may take me a bit to get it setup, but all updates going forward will be based on a new game using LIDAS 2.2.
THANKS AGAIN TO LIDAS! U DA MAN!!

The Montreal Canadiens are this year's President's Tropy winner, finishing the season with 166 points.
Our Leafers once again racked up 50 wins, and posted their best point production to date, finishing 4th in the conference with 106 points.
Marleau wins the scoring title again with 119 points, however, noone on the team cracked the 50 goal mark.
Gustavsson's play improved, finishing with the 8th best GAA in the league (amongst starters), signed him to a three-year extension at $3.45M per year.
On to the first round, and once again, we meet the New York Rangers.

Streakin'!

The Leafs tore out of the gate to start the season, picking up points in their first 12 games, and going 9-0-3, before losing to Carolina.
Marleau has 25 points in 13 games.
Kovalchuk has 21, with 13 goals.
Kessel has 26 with 10 goals (he's also uped his rating to 8.54).
The defense is even getting into the act, with Stuart and Kaberle each with 11 points.
Contract Extensions
As a result, I have decided to start offering contract extensions.
Kovalchuk is the first to re-up, signing a 7 year extension with a No-Trade Clause, that will pay him as follows:
$8M / $8M / $8M / $8M / $7M / $6M / $5M ... cap hit is $7,143,000/year (which actually saves me $850,000/year starting next year). He will be 40 years old when the contract runs out.
Jack Johnson signed for two more years at $1,950,000/year ($450,000/yr increase).
Dustin Brown also signed for two more years, at $750,000/year (same).
Phil Kessel signed for two more years at $6.5M per (a $750,000/year increase).
Patrick Marleau has also resigned for two years at $5,500,000 avg/year (he'll be 38 at the end of the contract). Saves me $500,000/year against the cap.

Silly Season 2012

Players Out/Not Resigned:
Taylor Pyatt (LW), Jeff Tambellini (LW), Ian White (D), Tim Gleason (D), 4 prospects.
Players In:
Janne Niskala (D) - 2 years, $700,000 per
James Sheppard (C/LW) - 2 years, $600,000 per
Brent Burns (D) - 2 years, $1,450,000 avg per
David Perron (LW) - 2 years, $750,000 per
This leaves me about $2M under the cap heading into the fall.
I only have the following players under contract for next year:
Steve Mason, Matthew Lombardi, Braydon Coburn, Niskala, Sheppard, Burns, and Perron.
I will decide at the end of the season who I will extend based on how the team does this year. I expect to make a serious run at the Cup...anything short of that and it will be time to blow things up and go with a youth movement.

Player Of The Year

For the 5th straight season, Patrick Marleau has been named the Fan's POY.
Curiously, despite the recent cash infusion from the owners, the dividend payout this year was the highest ever, at $17,750,000.
Made one minor deal after the draft...sent a signed LW prospect who had moved down in my depth charts (and was originally a late round pick who blossomed for a short period of time) to Vancouver for a 3rd Round pick in next years draft. I was a little heavy on the left side, and a few teams had expressed an interest in him.
On to the silly season...

Once again Patrick Marleau has won the Hart Trophy, his fourth, and third with the Leafs.
He was also named as a First-Team All-Star.
No other Leafs picked up any major awards this year.

I have to say, for as long as I`ve been playing Eastside, this is the first time I`ve ever received this message...

NOT the Montreal Canadiens...they were knocked off by Tampa Bay, who then swept the Oilers to win their 2nd Cup in 8 years, in their third trip to the finals in that span.

Last two World Championships were won by Finland and Sweden respectively, and the Czechs took last year`s World Junior Championship (that`s good news considering the state of Czech hockey).
However, Canada has won pretty much everything else (World Cup, Olympics, a couple World Championhips and World Juniors).

As expected, the first round series against the Lightning was a tough one, with the Leafs losing game 7 in overtime.
Simply, we got beat by a better team. No faulting the goalies this time.
The Lightning were lead by Lecavalier, Stramkos and Heatley, with Biron playing strong in net.
Decisions, decisions, decisions in the off-season...although I have most of this sad lot already signed for next year, but only 3 players are signed beyond next year.

End Of 2011-12 Regular Season

Tough schedule down the stretch, but Gustavsson closed out the season strong with a shutout.
Leafs finished with 50 wins for the second consecutive season, but fell back points-wise, finishing with 102 points, good enough for 10th overall, but third in the division behind Montreal and Ottawa. Vancouver followed-up their Stanley Cup win last year with their first President's Trophy. Montreal finished a point behind them, but had two more wins.
We start the playoffs against a Lightning team bouncing back from a disappointing season last year, missing the playoffs after being a Stanley Cup finalist.
Sidney Crosby finally won both the goal scoring and points titles (Marleau finished third in points).
Update on th Mason/Budaj trade....it appears the deal was a win/win...here's the stats since the trade:
Mason - 7GP - 3W - 0L - 0OSL - 2.28GAA - .912SV% - 7.57R
Budaj - 7GP - 3W - 2L - 1OSL - 2.95GAA - .907SV% - 8.14R
Both players appear to have needed the change of scenery.

All-Star Break...2012...
Goaltending has been a bit of an issue this year. The team is second best in the league in shots allowed, however, our team save percentage is one of the worst. Neither Gustavsson nor Budaj have played well.
My initial attempts at flipping Gustavsson for an established goaltender went nowhere. However, Columbus is in last place in the west, and Steve Mason is (ahem) not looking to resign with them at the end of the season (a la Kovalchuk). At 26, he's still got upside, plus, Budaj's contract is expiring this year also. He may be more inclined to resign with Columbus as their starter, and I certainly wasn't prepared to give Budaj big bucks in a backup role.
So...
Traded:
Peter Budaj, prospect Vince Dawson (2nd year with the Marlies) and a 6th round pick this year to Columbus for Steve Mason.
Haven't been able to convince him to re-up yet, and he is a UFA, so if I can't get him to sign, I gave up a 6th rounder and a prospect I wasn't planning to extend for a shot a signing a potential number one goalie...
However....neither the fans nor the Board seemed to like it...here's Budaj's and Mason's stats this year:
Budaj (32) - 26GP - 11W - 8L - 1OSL - 3.39GAA - .880SV% - 7.46R - $2,300,000 (final year)
Mason (26) - 44GP - 11W - 26L - 3OL - 3.89GAA - .886SV% - 7.66R - $1,190,000 (final year)
Gustavsson (30) - 39GP-29W-12L-0OSL - 3.03GAA - .888SV% - 7.74R - $3,000,000 (this year and next year)
EDIT
Managed to re-up Mason for two years at $1,860,000/year...at least $500,000/year cheaper than it would have cost me to re-sign Budaj.

InsideHockey.com ranks the Leafs third heading into the 2011-12 season, behind Calgary and Philadelphia. Defending Cup champ Vancouver is ranked 7th, finalists Montreal are 9th, and two-time President's Trophy winners New York Islanders have slipped to 10th.
Here's a look at this year's roster coming out of training camp:
G Gustavsson $3,000,000
G Budaj $2,000,000
LD Stuart $4,350,000
RD Schenn $1,850,000
LD Kaberle $4,120,000
RD Gleason $2,700,000
LD Coburn $3,300,000
RD Johnson $1,500,000
D White $750,000
C Marleau $6,000,000
LW Kovalchuk $8,000,000
RW Kessel $5,400,000
C Kadri $825,000
LW Tlusty $1,390,000
RW Hunter $2,100,000
C Lombardi $2,750,000
LW Vasicek $1,300,000
RW Kulemin $845,000
C Primeau $1,150,000
LW Pyatt $1,000,000
RW Brown $750,000
F Tambellini $600,000
F Bolland $650,000
Salaries total $56,330,000
Coburn, Johnson, Lombardi, Dustin Brown, and Bolland were my UFA acquisitions.
Full roster once again in the minors.
Signed Mark Todd out of training camp, but assigned him to his junior team.
Once again, Kovalchuk is the 2nd ranked LW, and Phil Kessel is the 6th ranked RW. Hampus Borjesson (C), drafted in the 2nd Round, 40th overall, is the 3rd ranked prospect. He is currently assigned to the Marlies.
