I've come across something like this when playing around with another save with this DB. A player was unwilling to sign as a pending UFA. I would offer the guy something like 4x5M/y and he would still reject, stating I wouldn't be able to afford him. Actually had a similar thing happen with Drury on the TB save. Anyway, the player went to free agency and on day 1 I was able to offer him a contract of 4x1,8M/y...and he accepted. Meaning he not only rejected a massive contract before he went UFA, he also took a 600k paycut on his first day as a free agent!
Not sure if it's the DB or an EHM thing, but I saw the same exact thing with Richer in the challenge. Wanted over 2.1 million when he was on my roster (and said he was happy), then wanted 850k as a UFA (sure wish I could've given that to him...) Ended up signing in Europe for 124k. I know that happens in real life sometimes too.

Asher - are you saying Richer was on your team, and even if you set him to a Core or Key player the Board wouldn't allow you to pay him the 2.1 million? And then the Board wouldn't let you sign him for $850K?

Regarding players refusing to resign for "big bucks" but then signing resigning on July 1st (or later) for much less.....

IMO it would sure be helpful if when this kind of thing happens it was posted at SI and saved games were uploaded (so Riz can actually see what's going on, otherwise I suspect the time required to reproduce it means it's not likely to get addressed anytime soon); if people are figuring someone should sign but won't, make a save at that time so when you get a lower contract offer signed on July 1st (or he signs somewhere else for much lower) you can upload both saves and report the issue - I think this is how such things are most likely to get fixed, and I'll happily push the issue in such cases

The board allowed it. So I don't think it was a budget issue. More so reputation or mechanics within the game the 'player' deciding he was worth less than half as much two days later.

Good point, I'll try to keep my eyes more open for things that 'dont' work like I think they should' and keep saves for the SI board.

And my watch has ended...

Had a great final season going. Fighting for the president's trophy all the way, downright excited that this could click. I knew we were young so tight playoff games worried me, but so far (and of course this was the case) had very few injuries (in fact, didn't lose a single man-game on defense, only used 48 games from guys outside of my top 12 forwards.)

First round-

Against Montreal, lose game 1 in OT (and therefore home ice), fight back to make it 3-1, lose game 5, then finish it in 6. For some reason Jan Marek hated the first round refs, and received 20 minutes for arguing with refs on two minute minors! In general, ship on course, hopefully the young group has learned.

Second round-

NJ Devils, which means Brodeur (gulp). Decide losing game 1 this time wasn't good enough, and lost the first two games... then took game 3 to OT before finally getting a win. Then it clicked, and won the next three with Kiprusoff giving up one goal a game.

Third round-

The class of the league made it this far- the top 4 regular season teams were all this far, so we draw the Islanders who were only 3 points behind us. In game 1 up 2-1 with 15 minutes left... then Kiprusoff goes down. Groin Strain, two weeks (so probably the whole dang series). Aubin is my backup, and he's terrifying. This was his first season above 88% saved in this NHL career. He wasn't too far off of Kiprusoff this year, so it should be okay right? 2 goals on 7 shots to lose that game in the last minute. Game two Aubin shows up, saves 38 shots, but we only manage 23 shots on goal and lose in OT. When Brooks Orpik scores one of your goals, you know your offense is in trouble. Game 3, lose by one goal, only managed 24 shots. Too make it appear even more hopeless, Captain Tampa Peca is injured for the series. Game 4... well, Andrew Brunette decides the pre-game skate is the time for an injury, so I'm down my #1 goalie, my captain, an alternate, and 2 of my 5 oldest players with a young team. They fought hard to get to OT, then double OT, then 95 minutes into the game it's all over, we are going golfing. Hard not to think if I didn't lose Kiprusoff we would've stolen at least one, maybe two of those one goal losses (all four games) and still be in the series...

I won't be able to get through another season before the end of this challenge. I'll write a better summary later, but this was a bittersweet finish. The best challenge regular season I've ever had, but injuries/better teams leave the bitter taste in my mouth. Maybe sometime down the road I'll see if this team will be able to redeem themselves for the 2004 Cup. I'll do a better top to bottom write-up and screenshots this weekend, but with a 1000 foot view, this whole challenge for my teams came down to goal tending. Once we had it, we were a top team, without it, we were average at best. Kind of bitter that work started again the last two weeks, because with no free agents leaving, if I had more time to crank out another season the last two weeks (no way now, it takes me 3 weeks or so during school to do a season), it might have ended with Peca holding Stanley and Bettman being boo'd!

We're extending this challenge for an extra week!

Nino is doing a little tweaking work on the 98DB and we'll start a new challenge based on that once it's ready.
