When re-signing a pending UFA, the contract must include at least one season past the current one. For example, if Player X's contract is in the final year of his contract (i.e. 2039-40), the player, if re-signed, must include a contract extending into the 2040-2041 season. As such, one cannot simply re-sign a player for that current season (i.e. 2039-40) only in order to prevent GMs from chipping away at a player's pending contract to lower salaries within the same season for a favourable contract later on. Violation of this rule will result in an official warning 1st offense, then waiving of the player in question for a 2nd offense.
