Poll- Which Franchise player would you choose?

Post by aussiehabit » Fri Feb 05, 2016 3:09 am

The league has started to settle down a bit and we have had a chance to look at some of the key players in the league performed over the last 40+ games. Which player would you choose to build as the foundation to your franchise's road to glory?

I was tempted to go with Price, as I love the idea of building from the net out with a true #1 goalie....but I don't think "28" is an age I can build a franchise around; I'm still a believer in the "5 year plan" being the most reasonable in most cases

I went with McDavid because of his young age, and I think he really is a "generational" player (the sized/skill of Mario Lemieux and the speed/excitement of Pavel Bure) + I have him on my Oilers! ands he is the intended foundation of the Oilers future glory

I'm going to have to go with McDavid for the reasons stated above.

If we kind of take age out of the equation, then I'm taking Alex Ovechkin.

His career to date puts him as a legitimate all-time great and hall of famer... by 30.

If you adjust for era effects, then we're looking at the best goal scorer since Maurice Richard.

The point of the game is to score goals, and he's better at it than basically everyone, ever.

(if we take current age into account, then McDavid is a no-brainer)

When I looked up "adjusted stats" I found something on HockeyReference where Ovechkin shows up twice in the top 30 seasons for a goalscorer, #2 and tied for #22 (while Phil Esposito shows up four times including twice in the top 13.....Brett Hull three times including #1, and Gretzky/Lemieux [both in the top 10] and Pavel Bure show up twice like Ovechkin).....and the Rocket's best season shows up tied for 81st http://www.hockey-reference.com/leaders ... eason.html
