Dan O'Neill

Dan O'Neill might be the next big thing in hockey. He is only 5'6'' and 141 lbs, but he is already dominating players that are two, three, four and even five years older than he is. No, he is not a young 16 years old Canadian who is shining before its time against 20 years old soon-to-be professional players in the Major Juniors. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, he made his debut this year at age 13 with the famous Shattuck-St.Mary's of the Minnesota High School Hockey League. Not only that, he is battling for the 2026-2027 scoring championships alongside his older teammates Willie McEachern and Grant Jensen. The diminutive right winger is not the only 13 year old in this big 58 teams league, but he is one of few alongside players such as Mitch Kuhlman (Lakeville South), Jordan Clark (Holy Angels), Will LaFontaine (Cloquet), Tucker Walker (White Bear Lake) and Kailer Lashoff (White Bear Lake). Although all six players have a special talent, he is the one that carry the biggest hype as he is already having a tremendous impact on his team. After 23 games, on December 1st 2026, he was leading the scoring race with 34 points (11+23). That was 2 more than McEachern and 3 more than Jensen, respectively second and third in that race. However, nothing is guaranteed at 13 years old as there are so much things that will factor in the development of those young men. It is very hard to assume anything for now but to follow the development of those players will be very interesting.

Dan O'Neill got 14 on December 22nd and is still slowly growing into a man. After the last measurement session, he is now 5'7'' and 145 lbs. On a team perspective, Shattuck-St.Mary's was not able to keep the pace they had at the beginning of the year and saw several other players climb up the scoring leader boards the last two months. O'Neill's teammate Willie McEachern is now leading everybody in the league with 60 points in 42 games, while O'Neill fell third, currently at 58 points (42GP). Kacper Samuels-Thomas (Eden Prairie) separates them at 59 points.

Dan O'Neill finished his first year in Shattuck-St.Mary's with a very strong 78 points in 60 games. Although it was not enough to win the scoring title, it doesn't mean this total was short from outstanding for a small 14 year old. O'Neill is now preparing himself to an important season because he is aiming to play college hockey and he wants to keep on improving his game. Even if he won't make the leap now, he knows that, all year long, he will be watched by scouts from many universities and colleges that will try to get him sign with them. O'Neill wears number 68 because he idolized Jaromir Jagr. He never saw him in action, he was only 6 years old when Jagr played his final NHL season, but he spent many hours on Youtube to watch videos of the great Jaromir. His father is from Pennsylvania and discovered the great game of hockey during the early 1990's when the Penguins of Mario and Jaromir won back-to-back Stanley Cups. He moved to Minnesota after his college years for work and that's where he met the woman that will become his wife and Dan's mom. He is the one who taught the passion of the game to Dan.

In his second season with Shattuck-St.Mary's, Dan O'Neill continue to be a leading force in his team's offense. With 16 goals and 35 points in 21 games, he leads his team in all offensive categories. His teammates Quinton Murray and Aiden Kuraly are trailing him with respectively 23 and 21 points. League-wide, O'Neill is second to only White Bear Lake's Maxwell Pierce who is on a pace of his own with 44 points in 20 games. However, it seems the scoring race will be tight for second place as Barnabas Russo (Jefferson), Hudson Michel (White Bear Lake), Josiah Demers and Liam Shore (Apple Valley) are all above 30 points already. White Bear Lake and Apple Valley seem to be two very competitive teams. When it comes to the +/- ratio, they both share the best 9 players of the category: Michel, Pierce, Mason Milan, Castan Gorsuch, Shore, Dillan Robbins, Lucas Mueller, Demers and Earl Peluso. However, it seems the best team in the entire league is Warroad, their goalie Gordie Madden has an incredible record of 18-1-3. Their best scorer Ed Fischer is ranked 14th in the league with 25 points. However, White Bear Lake's goalie Kailer Lashof has yet to lose a game, with a record of 17-0-3.

Dan O'Neill

February 1st, 2029

More than a year later, it looks like the competition is getting stronger in the Minnesota High-School Hockey League. Dan O'Neill, after finishing the 2027-28 season with 78 points (60 GP) - the same total as his first season - now sits sixth in the league in scoring with 53 points in 42 games and a point-per-game ratio a little bit inferior than what he made the last two seasons. For a young player in his third year at this level, it can be disappointing to see there is no progression in terms of offensive numbers. It looks like it will be his last season in this league as he is aiming to play in college hockey and the upcoming summer will be very interesting for him and his family. Speaking of family, he now forms a trio with his cousin Liam O'Neill who is from Faribault MN, the town where the school is based. At only 14 years old, Liam is also catching the eyes a few scouts with his offensive prowess, ranking ninth in the scoring race with 50 points in 42 games. Elsewhere in the league, it is Breck's fourth year player Castan Melgoza who came out of its shell by dominating the league with 58 points so far in 42 games. He consistently improved his numbers of the years, scoring respectively 18, 51 and 57 points in his previous three seasons.
