Koskinen ain't a bad goalie, possibly the best guy you could get outside of NHL circles at that time. He has really good nerves and in big games he tends to grow to a new dimension. In international tournaments he's been really strong.

There is a solution to the problems the Oilers are having though.

Bear with me...
.
.
.
.
Trade McDavid.

Yeah, I just said that. It would be win-win BTW. Allow McDavid to move onto a team that's a serious contender with a solid organization. Witness McDavid hit 100+ with ease in every season till 2025 and likely win a cup or two along the way.

So what about the Oilers? Well, they have no wingers. Zero. Nothing. And they have a ton of bad contracts (Lucic anyone..?) Lose the cap hit of McDavid and get three solid top six players in return, one of which is a 1st line winger. Oh, and get a nice draft pick or two thrown in as well. Make Draisaitl number one center with that new winger from the trade; Nugent-Hopkins can play second line easy.

Imagine all the things they could do if they simply gave up McDavid to the highest bidder. Win-win guys.

I know it will never happen as nobody would have balls to do something like that. It would work though.

I've read that theory somewhere else too. Even though it sucks for McDavid being there, he's still very young and the Oilers do have the time to turn the tables. Even if by the time evrything goes back in order Connor will have hit 30.

I'm exagerating things a bit but it will indeed take a long time to sort out all of those bad contracts in Edmonton.

I'm actually expecting McDavid to ask for a trade out of EDM in the next year or two. When he does so, the return for him will have diminished by that sort of thing going public. So trading him BEFORE something like that goes public would probably be prudent.

He should've signed a five years deal instead like Matthews. Anyway it's McDavid. All the teams won't care about his contract.

Thank you Ottawa to make it easy for Colorado to have a high pick at the draft. :-D

I'll be that salty Avs fan.

That freaking draft lotery is a joke. Seriously. They should do it live.

They've tweaked it enough now that it really is just fairly random. I don't think it's conspiracy so much as I think they put TOO much thought and work into it. This particular year is a great reminder though that tanking truly does no good. Unless they're going to start weighing individual teams drafts, where they reduce individual odds incrementally for each time a team already drafted in the Top 3 say in the past 10 years... there's really no fixing it at this point.

DET fans were beside themselves when the Wings won like 7 of their last 10 or 11 games because they wanted to tank so badly. You better believe I and some others reminded them of that last night after the lottery. The draft lottery just isn't a plan anymore. It's literally gambling, trading Wins for very small chances at a good pick.

As a DET fan I should probably be mad (3 times now in 3 years DET's draft position came up worse than their record), but it kinda' doesn't matter. Outside of the Top 2, you're getting largely the same value in the rest of the Top 10, if not more. Of late they've drafted Larkin at #15, Mantha at #20, Cholowski at #20, Bertuzzi in the 2nd round, Hronek in the 2nd round, and Athanasiou in the 4th round. Filip Larsson is now probably the most promising goalie in the system and he was a 6th rounder. Christopher Ehn came out of nowhere in camp to make the team last season and he was a 4th rounder. Rasmussen was 10th overall IIRC, Zadina 6th and Veleno 30th. You can clearly get good players if you do your work.

I'm looking forward to next season when Zadina, Veleno, Cholowski, and Hronek all probably get a decent amount of games in DET along with the guys already there, especially remembering DET got Hirose for free and he was literally around a point-per-game guy.

I'm just mad because in the past 3 years Colorado could've picked first and they fell both times to the fourth position.

This barely happened with Edmonton in years.

On top of that two of the biggest US markets are in the top 3. *puts back tin foil hat*

Tampa sure looks like a pretty good team right now.

With the season they had there's no fuel left in the tank. On top of that their defense is horrible since the playoffs started.

Jones never seem to have done well in the playoffs.

I was watching the 9 minute condensed games for all NHL games from the start of the season until Christmas, but stopped and then only sometimes watched some of the HNIC games on Saturdays...I was waiting for the playoffs!

I don't have TV but I watch online via CBC, so I only get to see what CBC shows
  • I've watched most of the Bruins/Leafs series and have enjoyed it (game 2 reminded me of the playoff hockey I grew up with!)
  • I watched some of all 4 games in the Islanders sweep of Pittsburgh...Nassau Coliseum was great, but beyond game 1 the hockey I saw was pretty "meh" to me
  • I haven't watched much Calgary/Colorado, I start watching but end up doing something else before very long (maybe tonight will be different)
  • CBC showed game 3 of the St. Louis/Winnipeg series and it was pretty good; I think CBC will be showing the rest of this series now, so I'll be able to watch more

Steve Yzerman is coming back to Detroit it seems. It's not like we weren't expecting it at some point!

I'm still genuinely surprised here. Ken Holland has spent months talking about how he still liked being GM and wanted to be GM. So it's... odd that he suddenly is OK being kicked upstairs to a non-GM role. I'm still wondering if he's not bound for Seattle.

Let's see what Yzerman talks about at the conference I guess.

I knew Colorado could take on the Flames but not in 5 games! Wow!

The first round this year is full of pleasant surprises. This is fun to see new teams going further.
