timmy_t wrote:The grouping of teams in the West seems a lot better than the East. Why are Tampa and Florida in the same division as Toronto? Columbus is in the "Metropolitan" division ? I don't get it!

Because they want to keep most of the rivalries.
They wanted BOS, TOR, OTT, MTL, BUF and DET together
They wanted NYR, NYI, NJ, PHI, PIT, WSH together
CBS is close to PIT and they wanted the Florida teams together.
Logical IMO
The names are crazy though!

Metropolit division looks good. I don't care about Carolina in there tho.. unless they move back to Hartford, wear green jerseys or hire Irbe in net. Columbus has been my favourite team to manage in EHM and there's usually playing few ex. Phillies.

I drew a quick map of the new divisions.

A bit unfair I'd say. I'd put northeast teams in one division instead of the "metropolitan"

What two teams would you move to the Northeast? NYR and NYI? according to your map. And not have them in the same division as NJ and PHI?
You have to look further than the stupid names
The divisions are good enough, the names are not. Remember, they set the divisions long before deciding on the names

Viewing this makes Tampa and Florida look even more like total rejects in their division.

Yeah and Dallas too! They're closer to Mexico than many of their opposition!

I know that we're beating this to death, but after looking at the map it seems like the most logical thing to do in the east was to put Tampa and Florida in a division with Columbus, Carolina, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and New Jersey. That would allow Tampa and Florida to be closer to their division opponents.
Another thought would be to move Chicago into a division with all of the other Original Six Teams. That would be a cool division for sure!

So....
This is a bit veering off-topic, but... it's extremely frustrating, as an EHMer, when the game lets you have somewhat of a working knowledge of NHL rosters and how they work (50 man active limit, 80-man rights reserve list, etc) and to have non-EHMers ignore you when you're telling them you KNOW how it works and they're making assumptions that aren't grounded in reality or anything.
I'm getting real sick of trying to explain to people why Thomas McCollum, as an unsigned RFA, counts like a prospect against DET's 80, but not the 50, because there's no NHL contract there (he signed with Grand Rapids on an AHL deal). 50 is contracted, 80 is rights, and an unsigned RFA is only considered rights until which time he's signed. It's not complicated. Why does everyone try to make it so complicated?

Sometimes people want to argue just because Primis.
Doesn't the game have it messed up though? There was a thread on this once and I think you might of been the one to explain this exact thing to me.

I think it's just unfair that one division has all the teams in one spot (travel time really short). While the three others has huge distances. I know it would hard to make it a lot bigger but still it would be possible and logical. But at least have Carolina with FLA/TB...
Or even a Canadian division!?

If Jagr signs with New Jersey as rumoured. Do you think Lou(cifer) Lamoriello,

, will let him have his #68 ? The Devils usuallydoes not allow for high jersey numbers.

For teams in the West this has been an issue/complaint for decades!
Here's some recent data on NHL team travel

I dunno'. This all spilled over into this morning and involved someone actually reading the CBA to find... hey, whaddaya' know, the 50 list is contracted, like I said all along, and lo' and behold an AHL deal doesn't count against it because it has to be an NHL contract (yes there was a question on this, for whatever god-forsaken reason).
No I'm not bitter or anything. But hey, whatever, don't listen to me... *grumble grumble*
I dunno', the game *implements* the Contracted and Reserve lists right I think, it just doesn't always treat it right on a case-to-case basis in-game. There are certain cases IIRC where you can get rid of a contracted player and it won't recognize it and remove it from your 50 and it'll still complain. I've always wanted to expand the 50 in-game to 60 or 65 for fun... but that's in the .EXE.
Also, we now find out the Reserve List has been raised from 2007's 80, to 90 in the new CBA. Why anyone needs 40 unsigned rights in an era where the draft has been REDUCED, I dunno'....

I don't think Jagr will EVER change his number, not even for NJ/Lou.

The She-Devils has alway( AFAIK) only been using 1-35 and assigned by the the club. David Clarkson was a little surprised he had the chance to choose his number after signing with the Leafs

1. Jagr will wear 8 or 6. LOL.
2. I think that because of all the travel whining of the teams in the east and their fans that Dallas, Tampa Bay and Florida should be moved to the Pacific Division. And Phoenix, Colorado and Calgary should be moved to the Atlantic.

Pavelski signed a 5 years deal with the Sharks worth 30 millions.
Bogosian signed for 7 years worth 36 millions.

At 41 years old Ziggy Palffy announced his retirement today. I always loved him when he was playing in the NHL, that guy was good! He got nice stats in his country too, pretty impressive! I wonder if he was too strong for the league he was playing in or it's kind of normal there.

Indeed he was a great player.

I still remember a hockey card of Ziggy (in NYI) that I had when I was a kid.

Where do you get these news, do you have a specific site that has great hockey news?

Rumours starting of 2014-15 expansion. Seattle. Oh boy. That would mean a 2nd expansion team as well to 32. Is the product not watered down enough??

Well I got it on my french website RDS. They're not the quickest but sometimes they put out news out of nowhere, guess it was one.
@Batdad, heard that too and I really don't like this. This league is going to hell. With 32 teams the "product" will be even worse, that's just sad.

They need to relocate a team that's struggling in their current location. Phoenix? What an idea! The NHL really doesn't want to see teams move though. They'd rather have an expansion so they can get the huge expansion fees from the new team owners and then let the struggling teams flounder and maybe even fold. Sure, they present a weaker product but they make more short term money.

It's maybe a little bit off-topic, but I don't know if it's necessary to create a new thread just for this:
I also heard about this possible future expansion to 32 teams, and I wondered something about EHM and the updating team:
In case of expansion, and because of the hardcoded league structures, how will you do to choose the only 30 NHL teams possible in game?
It's already the case with the AHL, where 3 teams are not present in the league but in ECHL, but in case, will you think about putting 2 teams from the NHL to the AHL then?
Or will it be possible to trick the game just like you guys did for the Austrian championship?

doomski, I doubt the league will be expanding anytime soon. There are too many teams that are bleeding money and I just don't think Bettman will allow expansion. We all have heard the rumours of Seattle and Quebec or Toronto (should be Hamilton) but I highly doubt it will happen...more likely relocation will be the case.
