Haven't posted here in awhile, but thought I'd share my experience.

Now up to year 2035 using 4.1b with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Have minimized trades, and been able to win 5 cups over the 20+ year period. Biggest challenge is getting players to sign long-term deals...I know this has come up in other forums. Going to keep this universe going until the updated rosters come out later in the year, after July 1st or in the fall, and will keep you posted on the progress.

BTW, why the heck do the Charlotte Checkers seem to win so much in the AHL?? :dunno:

Maybe they are the first team to get the Kings?
Sorry bad pun, very bad indeed.

My game is in its first season still with the Philadelphia Flyers.
I am around February and pretty much when the new year begins I start to focus on resigning the people I want to continue with.

In this case pretty much everyone on the roster is coming back for a second term bar a few failed prospects that have no future with my team, but even then I try to trade them around.

My toughest choices are the extensions of Carle and Coburn, both are earning 3+ and I am trying to haggle my backsides off to get them to at least sign something which doesn't have a wage bump.
I know that those two are possibly my future defensive core together with Meszaros but my financial maneuvre room is at a minimum and I am not sure if I can stay under the cap with them on the team. Timonen and Pronger are getting there with age, but they have made themselves undisputed 1st line defenders with their experience and ability...

On offense I have decided to resign Jagr for another season, he wouldn't accept a lower wage but I did manage to deny his wanted 600K hike and have him earn the same next year.
The GM inside me tells me to drop Jagr due to his advanced age, but he is one of the few true goal scorers on my team and he is 12th goalscoring this season, so I don't want to get rid of him without at least getting a potential scorer back into the team.

Naturally I resigned van Riemsdyk and Voracek because they are already the number one guys on their respective positions and having them leave without any compensation would be foolish to say the least.

With so much guys having to sign extensions and a lot of them wanting more money, it's gonna be tough to stay under the cap for season 2... But even if that happens, I think I can always trade away some huge earners because I got plenty of draft picks and also plenty of talent...

Now on to the actual league side of things, Right now with 53 games played I am sitting on top of the Eastern Conference with 76 points (34W, 11L, 8O/SL) I am also second overall on PP with a 20% conversion rate, second only to the Caps.

Voracek and Jagr are my best scorers with 33 and 29 goals respectively, they really tug along our sometimes lacking offense and it's good to see Voracek being so prolific on offense at his 22 years of age.
Hartnell and Briere lead the assisting with 45 and 41 assists, and Hartnell is an assist machine, when he isn't helping on defense he is helping distribute the puck.

And on the rookie side of things Sean Couturier is well on his way to win Rookie of the Year honours for this season and even though he lacks scoring ability (7 in 48) he is assisting very well with 21 in 48 games from the third line. I am also having him retrain to both Left Wing and Right Wing, it should help him get on a higer line because with Giroux and Briere on the first and second line there isn't much chance for him to break through that ceiling. And I also like to have talented forwards become effective on all three positions if I can help it, i love having the ability to shuffle players around without having them suffer much performance wise.

And that is pretty much everything I got to say right now, below I will post my current Flyers lineups.

Goalie: Bryzgalov (Leclaire)
Defense: Pronger-Meszaros, Timonen-Carle, Coburn-Grossman
1st line: van Riemsdyk-Giroux-Voracek
2nd line: Schenn-Briere-Jagr
3rd line: Couturier-Cullen-Simmonds
4th line: Wellwood-Madden-Parse

Notable AHL players: (Top prospects list)
(D)Gustafsson, (G)Hovinen, (W)Matt Read, (C)Zac Rinaldo, (D)Bran Manning, (W)Harry Zolnierczyk, (D)Marc-Andre Bourdon, (W)Brendan Ranford, (W)Tye McGinn, (W)Mike Testwuide

Just getting back into EHM after a long hiatus of xboxxery... Anyway, using 4.1b rosters and the super-fancy patch to set the start date to 2011. Went with the Winnipeg Jets, but it's only a name as I also went with the fantasy draft. I let the computer handle all the picks just to see how things would end up, and got a decent team out of the mix.

Lundqvist / Montoya in net with a couple of guys that could be useful NHL backups
Burrows / Malkin / Perry makes for a really nice top line.

Defense- what defense? What do I need to defend for anyway?
... okay, I lie, I do have P.K. Subban and Luca Sbisa -- decent, but not yet ready to be the #1 and #2 on a team

Ended 2011-12 season 8th in the conference, and managed to take the cup finals to 6 games before losing 4-2

Anyway, looked around for some defense, and was able to grab Meszaros for Montoya and 2 2nd round picks. Montoya deserves to be a starter, so I specifically looked for teams who needed a starter.
--- inevitably Meszaros fractured his arm in the very first practise and was put on the shelf for 4 months.

That all being said, after 4 months, I am in 3rd in the conference and Meszaros finally made his debut in the last game I played. That's where I am at the moment...

Playing my first ever season of EHM. I went the Philadelphia Flyers and finished the regular season with a 55-22-5 record and qualified for the play-offs in 4th position in the Eastern Conference. I have the Devils in the first round of the play offs. I have brought in Lyle Odelein, Chris Therien, Chris Tamer on frees and traded Niko Dimitrakos for Chris Drury from the Sabres.

Hey guys! I'm 4 years into being GM of the Oilers.

After struggling for a year being last place (because I was the Oilers), I made some trades and got some really sweet draft picks.

Drafted smartly (I think) anyway, and was about 10th in the west the next year. My third year, after trading up at the draft for the 1st overall pick, I drafted a guy named Vit Polak. Who looks to be outstanding! He's still in Junior 2 years later, but with the lineup I have now, there isn't any room for him, and he's ineligible for the AHL. Its funny because my scouts were saying that he was ok, but that I should draft some other guy rated at #54 instead of this guy. But screw them, I'm the GM!! hahaha. That offseason I signed Tyler Seguin as a free agent because he refused to resign with Boston. 3 years at 2.5 mil per year was a great deal!

So the next year I lost in the first round of the playoffs, and once again traded a few picks and a roster player to move up to 1st overall. I kept that guy in juniors as well, but my team was strong that year. All the kids I had stepped up and I won the cup that year!

Here is my cup winning roster:::

Pajaarvi is an all star in my game by the way, 116 points on the season! Seguin had 104

Pajaarvi-Nugent Hopkins-Seguin
Hall-Carter-Eberle
Huberdeau-Strome-Barkov(first overall pick couple years ago)
Gaustad-Bolland-Doan

Smid-Doughty
Mezaros-Klefbom
Hamilton-Musil

Rolling 3 straight up offensive scoring lines, and one defensive (tough guys and veterans).

Now I am beginning to be light on defensive depth because some of my 3-4th round picks didn't pan out quite like I'd hoped, but I've got Galchenyuk, Matteau, Monahan, and one other guy that I don't remember, in the AHL waiting to be called up to the bigs. And I think I've only got 2 rookie defensemen in the AHL, that are even worth bringing up for injuries.

Lately I've noticed I'm light in the goal position as well. Dubnyk and Pavelec are fine, but I realized when they both got a minor injury a day apart, that I have 0 goalie prospects (because I traded my only one for Jonathan Huberdeau without thinking.) ](*,) haha. So after I won the cup, I traded some picks and Doan (who then retired, hahahaha!) for the 1st overall again, and drafted a Goalie, as well as more defensemen and another goalie in the 5th round. I'm trying to aquire a player from the Leafs right now, who is 19 years old, and has high green numbers for stats more often than not. His name is Victor Larionov...... (regen??) But I can't get that stupid Brian Burke to agree to take anything!! I even offered up Nugent Hopkins ( who physio says they have long term concerns over a groin injury sufferd years ago.) and a 1st round pick, and they said it wasn't good enough! haha. Carter and a 2nd and the rights to one of my rookies... NOT GOOD ENOUGH! gee whiz what will it take?? The Leafs in my game somehow have aquired both Sedin twins as well. They are a strong team.

The next year I'm 4th in the west, 2 points behind the Avs for 1st in the west, and right after the trade deadline, things were looking good. I was steadily 2 points out of 1st place in west, and looking to go on a winning streak at the end of the season to clinch 1st place and play the naff Canucks who were 8th. And Dubnyk gets injured for 4 months!! No here is where my lack of goalie depth hurts! I couldn't even make an emergency rental trade because the deadline had passed! Pavelec is the starter now, and some dude that the game spawned for me is my backup. I'm 10 games away from the end of the season and hopefully I can pull it off again! Wish me luck with my mediocre goaltenders!

Dubnyk
Pavelec

My Team as it stands now:::not too much different

Pajaarvi-Nugent Hopkins-Seguin
Hall-Strome-R. Callahan
Huberdeau-Carter-Eberle
Gaustad-Bolland-Barkov (hope this isn't stunting development)

Smid-Doughty
Mezaros-Klefbom
Hamilton-Musil

Pavelec
Gordon (?? some guy??)

Decided to go with Jets. The reason why I took over Jets was that I wanted somekind of challenge because I knew that Winnipeg weren't really the strongest team around there. I'm using Manimal 4.2b rosters.

First season 2011-2012 didn't went well at all. My aim was to get good draft pick so I wasn't expecting a good season at all. Ended 12th at Eastern Conference and won the lottery so I had 3rd pick.

In january first player that i acquired was Marc-Antoine Pouliot. Coyotes decided to waive him and I claimed him because I thought that He could be decent 3rd or 4th liner. I wanted to get rid off Hainsey because $4 500 000p/y was just too much for a player like Hainsey. The oppurtunity to trade him without waiving him came near trade deadline in February. I sent Hainsey to Chicago and in return i got their 2nd round pick 2012. Thought that was pretty decent trade since Chicago had underperformed a lot.

Signed Swedish goaltender Pettersson-Wentzel to rookie-contract. Just before the NHL Entry Draft Detroit had to put Jiri Hudler on block to get some salary room. I was able to trade him for rights to Daultan Leveille and Hudler signed a new contract with Jets. Some evil thought inside me said that I should trade Hudler immediately. I believed that and traded Hudler and rights to Ilya Nikulin to Canucks and in return got their 1st round pick 29th overall.

Draft:
#3 Alex Galchenyuk C/LW Jets
#29 Andeas Athanasiou LW Jets
#37 Jesse Forsberg D Jets
#40 Myles Bell D Jets
#67 Aston Sautner D Jets
#127 Tyrel Seaman C Jets
#157 Hunter Fejes LW/C Jets
#187 Jean-Francois Leblanc C Jets

I was very happy with my picks. I wanted Yakupov, Grigorenko or Galchenyuk and eventually got Galchenyuk. Hunter Fejes could be a steal. He has been very promising and my assistant GM says he's my second best prospect.

I realized that I hadn't got good wingers at all. I had so much cap room so I was able try to sign one franchise winger. Tried to sign Parise with $6,500 000p/y 4 years but he decided to go Minnesota Wild (suprise!). Then signed Penner for 3-year contract $4,980 000p/y. I know that Penner isn't the most reliable player that I could get but I was pretty impressed with his last season. He played every 82 games of the regular season and notched 82 points. In playoffs he played 20 games and had 27 points. He was Conn Smythe trophy runner up as Kings won the Stanley Cup. He accepted my offer and joined. I was kind of excited but then I noticed that he had torn ACL and was injured for 6 months. Somehow I wasn't able to see that because he was injured for 7 months in his last game at the playoffs.

Season 2012-2013
Now is my second season controlling the Jets. I'm currently 4th in conference and in 24th of December Dustin Penner probably is going to finally make his debut for my team.

EDIT: Forget to mention that I also signed Brian Elliott G as free agent also but it looks like that he isn't going to be even my backup goalie.

Finally Dustin Penner was able to make his debut and what debut it was! He scored twice against Senators and was named MOM. I noticed that I hadn't put my lineup here so here it is.

Forward Lines

1st line Ladd---Kane---Fehr

Decent mixture of shots and Ladd leads the physical play. Only concern here is that Fehr isn't good enough for 1st line but he has played good so far. Last season Kane played in 3rd line but he has improved and has played superb season so far so he deserves his place in 1st line. I really have short of left wingers so Ladd is the number one choice there.

2nd line Penner---Antropov---Wheeler

Penner is like Ladd but not so good and consistent so I decided to put him as 2nd liner. Antropov who fooled me to give him notradeclause when i re-signed him is the playmaker here. Last season he was my first choice but the trickery with contract negotations and Evander Kane growing were the main reasons he is only number two. W. With his playmaking skill Wheeler can cover Antropov when Antropov isn't producing any good passes. In overall my 2nd line is physical too even though Wheeler isn't the hitter he still has the strenght to take the hits for the team.

3nd line Burmistrov---Little---Thorburn

This was a bit tricky line for me as Burmistrov and Little are purely offensiveminded players. Fortunately Thorburn adds some defensive skill to this line with his physicality. I would love to let Burmistrov play as center but as I have so many centers it's impossible. And he is able to play as LW so he can't be center. I have mixed this line sometimes placing Slater as LW or Macenauer as center to give more defensive skill to this line.

4th line Slater---Macenauer---Wellwood

Can't say really typical 4th line because Slater and Wellwood aren't the greatest defensiveminded forwards out there. Luckily I have Macenauer here. He is very talent kid and I feel sorry for him that he is only my 4th liner. I'm happy though that my 4th line is also able to score when other lines aren't producing.

Defense Pairs

1st Pair Enström---Byfuglien

Clearly the two best defenders I have on my roster. Enström with his playmaking abilities and with his variety of shots is very valuable asset for me. If there is one thing I would like him to improve, it's his strenght because I find it below acceptable even for offensive D-man. Byfuglien is very physical offensive D-man. He has hard slapshot and his defensive skills are good. He is punishing hitter but his flaw is that he is very slow and quick forwards are poison for him. Still he is franchise D-man and probably the best D-man I have on my roster.

2nd Pair Clitsome---Bogosian

I must admit that I hadn't even heard of Clitsome when I started playing as Jets but he has proven himself as established player. Clitsome is pretty decent player and I'd say a little bit offensiveminded. Bogosian would play in 1st pair if Byfuglien weren't there. Bogosian is very talented and already proven himself. He is also offensiveminded with his hard slapshot but he could punish you with his big hits. Overall he is great player and when Byfuglien gets older Bogosian surely claims his place.

3rd Pair Stuart---Jones

Well anyone can say that these two aren't producing anything from the blue line. These guys are purely defensive defenders and their main target is to keep own goal clean. If their +/- isn't + then I'm bit disappointed because I'm not expecting them to produce points but some hits and other defensive plays.

Goalies

1st Pavelec

This was hard call because troughout last season Mason was my fist choice as goalie but Pavelec has improved some so I thought I could give him a chance. Probably the weakest area is my goaltending because none of my goalies are worldclass and if I make to the playoffs I'm expecting trouble. Pavelec is great at using his blocker and glove but he hasn't got the quickest reflexes around there.

2nd Elliott

Hard call again. Signed Elliott as free agent. I was impressed by his skills. After struggling start he has maintained his position as my backup.

3rd Mason

Chris was my first choice last season all season long but then something happened. He is my third goaltender and this wasn't supposed to happen. He is my oldest goaltender and player aged 36.

I'm in my first year with the leafs. I'm doing okay. I finished 6 (for the leafs it's exeptional) and had been eleminated in 4 in the first round.
So my roster is
Lupul-Kadri-Kessel (kadri actually had 97 pts 84 assists at his rookie season)
Kulemin-Grabo-Brown(for Franson)
McArthur-Bozak-Amstrong
Sutherby(UFA)-Steckel-Orr(246min of penalty  )

Phaneuf-Schenn
Gardiner-Komisarek
LIles-Gunarsson

Anders Nilsson (12-4-1 ,924) I got him for my choice of 7th round :joy:
Pascal Leclaire (22-18-6 ,908) UFA
James Reimer  (6-10-3 ,864 and 3,85) Worst goalie ever. I trade him with my 1st pick for Nail Yakupov.

So now i'm looking for a RD to remplace Gunnarsson (LD). HE has no use with use. I'm also looking for a third line center (Bozak is playing like  )
I actually trade Connolly for Ryan Strome =P~ . If I see that he has a good training camp I'm going to give him the chance to be my third line player and a small place or in the Pk or in the PP.

I which in my second season i'm going to be better

:-) He hasn't played well in my save either.(I'm controlling Jets) Season 2011-2012 his savepercent was .868 and he played 36 games. This season (2012-2013) he has played 43 games with .888 percentage. Maybe he is starting to improve who knows...

But actually if we see his ability, he's not exceptionnal. If I do a new game I would put him in the AHL for at least one season and then use him as a backup. :-?

BTW, if you want a good goalie go see the Islanders and do a trade for Anders Nilson (a choice of 7 round is okay) but he's a good no1 goalie.

In my current game I started out playing with Moose Jaw Warriors in the dub. At first it wasn't going too well, and I struggled two seasons with poor performance from my goalies, until late in the second season I got things turned around and I made the play-offs. Somehow the kids had matured just in time to make an amazing play-off run, eventually winning the Ed Chynoweth Cup. I almost won the Calder Cup as well, but lost the finals to The Windsor Spitfires, who I actually beat in my first game of the tournament. I tried to motivate myself to go through another season with the team, but I had decided to try getting appointed as an NHL coach after spending a few seasons in the minors, so I decided to search for a new challenge elsewhere. The challenge came up in the form of Toledo Walleye in the ECHL, who were last in their division at that point. After I'd spent a good few months unemployed, I didn't hesitate to accept the job, although I knew the North Division had Adirondack, Bridgeport and Albany (all direct NHL affiliates with entire rosters filled with AHL players).

So far I have tried to turn things around and I've left 7th position and now find myself 5th, just one point away from a play-off spot. I had to redo almost the entire roster and finding cheap and better quality players has been a real challenge. My seasons spent in the dub has helped though, and I've picked up a few quality youngsters who're considered over-aged in the juniors.

As a conclusion, I really dig the ECHL from a managing point of view. It's quite challenging. There's the strict salary cap, a limit of 18 players dressed in a game and the few opponents who get almost their entire roster directly from their NHL affiliate are sure to put anyone's managing abilities to the test. It's fair though (aside from the favored few), because like the juniors, you can't really compete financially. So it all comes down to finding good and cheap players, training and tactics (ie the very core of managing). It's now Feb 1st, I'm in a race for a play-off spot, and I just beat The Phantoms. So things are looking quite exciting atm.

Luckily I don't need a goalie now. Pavelec has played well and Elliott is providing great cover. I traded Mason to Blue Jackets for 3 round pick and then he decided to retire. I have acquired Nilsson once when I was playing with Blues. He ended being my 4th goalie behind Halak, Elliott and Allen. He actually went to Sweden for couple of seasons and played well there and I decided to give him a chance.

Not sure if you are still playing this save but anyway. I would put Strome on 2nd line or 3rd because he's such talented guy but very offensiveminded. And that's the reason why he probably shouldn't have any PK time. I would give him some PP time too because he needs that. One option is to keep him at AHL for one season so he would get some playing experience. Also I would get rid off Komisarek because he's so overrated and overpaid. Trading him isn't probably necessary because you traded Connolly for Strome and that gave you some salary cap room. Here is actually picture of Strome. He plays for AI controlled New York Islanders.

I've just finnished my first season as the Sheffield Steelers on EHM 2004

We finnished 5th in the Regular season which was enough to get into the play off groups which we finnished bottom of so we didn't get through to the final four :( In the British Cup we got to the final but lost 10-5 on aggregate to the Nottingham Panthers

Image

Our star player for the season was Mark Dutiaume who scored 48 points in 53 games

Image

Our best result was a 9-0 thrashing of the Basingstoke Bison

Mark Dutiame was once again my best player

We only signed 5 players in pre-season Joe Collyer was my back up keeper signing after I released Bronsard. Our best result was a 9-2 win over the Belfast Giants

He plays for AI controlled New York Islanders.[/quote]

I think I'm going to trade Grabovsky or put him in the 3rd line and put Strome at his place or just put it in the AHL for one season (the marlies are playing like ...)

This is the first time that I have scored over ten goals in a game i've come close a few times by scoring 9 but this time we went overboard and got 14 :notworthy:

I have moved Loosie's and Kadri's posts about coaching in every league from the lowest to the NHL here: http://www.ehmtheblueline.com/forums/vi ... 86#p145886

I thought they were deserving of a separate thread as it's quite a unique challenge. 8-)
