RyanSmythe: you cannot find any good youngster to draft over a long period of time (21 years), right ???
You might find my drafting strategy quite helpful.

I haven't seen any good goalie prospects in the first two or three years eligible for the draft in any of my games.

I don't know if anyone else has had this same problem, but the first decent goalie to be drafted seems to be the Hasek-regen, who will appear to the draft around season four, and even that guy seems to be a high risk pick (with the injury proneness and all).
Build by trading, that's my motto.

yeah but the thing is i suck at trading and i also cave in at every negotiation

Tyson Sexsmith is about the best you are going to find in the first couple of drafts. I have in the past turned him into a star goalie. But I do that with alot of goalies. Including freaking Alex Auld somehow. I dunno.

Yeah, Sexsmith is the best until regens come in. Justin Leclerc sometimes worth a shot, but it varies from games to games. Both are in the first season draft though. In season 2, there's just noone.
So if you know you'll have a goalie issue in a few years and you know you're not good at trading (anyway, trading for a super goalie is usually pretty hard), your best shot is probably to save enough cap room to go after an interesting goalie on the FA markets. Then wait for the regens to come in, and see what goalies you have there. Hasek's regen is always mentionned, but he is clearly not the only one, and sometimes he doesn't worth anything, due to poor determination and/or workrate. Your other option is to improve your trading abilities

Especially at the deadline, where you can get some decent stuff. Or if you don't mind about realism and want to play arcade (i don't see the point to do so in a simulation game, but some do...

), make trades during the off-season, when the AI is known to be way weaker regarding trades. You can easily get steals then. But once again, i just don't see the point doing so, and there's absolutely no pride in it.

my 2 goalies are Noronen and osgood who are almost equal in skill but they arent exactly playoff material sadly enough

i do have sexsmith on my AHL but he is alot of years from NHL Level.
so if anyone can teach me o great trading masters i maybe can get a cheap fixit for a few years.

So I'm playing a game started from the save that Calv released that has all of the TBL Create-A-Star players in it. The game started in May of 2008 and I'm currently in March of 09. I happened to notice a player that I've never noticed before and he looks like he could be really good. He's not one of the players that Calv entered. He's an actual player that even has a card that was released in the NCAA cardpack. Has anyone ever heard of Carl Sneep? It says he was drafted in the second round of the 2006 draft, so he was already drafted by the Penguins at the start of the game (we start in 06 but our first draft is in 07). I can't believe I haven't come across him before. He's looking pretty good...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v166/ ... /sneep.jpg
My scouts say he's a skilled defenseman with 1-2 potential and projects to be like Chris Pronger but with a smaller frame. Is this guy for real? Does anyone else have an experience with him? I might have to try to acquire him.

Sneep is real deal. He's potential in original DB was -14 (90-160)
So in that game he just get lucky and he got maximum potential from lottery.

Thanks for the info on him Lazion. I guess in the past he never got lucky on the random potential. I might just have to acquire him in the off-season.

Some youngins who have worked well for me:
Thomas Samalelain (sp?) - starts with the Blackhawks - got him for a song (4th round pick or less) - was averaging around 1 pt/game playing 2nd line and 2PP duty - very fast and has good goal scoring ability - needs some defensive help
Eric Fehr - just got him recently from the Caps and he got Offensive Player of the Week for me playing in Samalelain's place (dealt Sam, backup goalie and some picks to get Fehr,Sutherby, and Morrsion from Caps) - power forward type, but has good speed - Eric Cole type player it appears
Steve Eminger - another deal with the Caps - dealt #5 D-man and a pick for him and now he's scouted as a Niedermyer type D-man (#1-2 potential) - in the top 5 for D-man scoring
Lauri Korpikowski - Young and has some talent - was playing in the AHL for Rangers when I swaped a pick for him. Looks to have 2nd line talent at worst -can score and has excellent speed
Mattias Weinhandl - not as young, but underrated for what he can do - can play 2nd through 4th lines depending on needs - above average on defense with decent offensive skills

Has anyone had any luck with "Evan Trupp". I always seem to be able to get him in roughly the 5th round in the 2007 draft and he has average stats. But looking at his history and points over his career, the guy is a monster.
Has anyone had anythin like this with him and anyone get him to perform at NHL level?

Hehe.. all people from Finland cares.. especially Tasku does.
Do you guys know, how ridiculous sound is when foreign commentator says Finnish name in hockey match..? Teemu Selänne sounds like Timu Silaene etc..

Tasku is gonna have a hard time fitting all the names in his profile under his name.

I've already seen it, but felt overwhelmed by the ignorance of the rest of the world (regarding spelling of Finnish names), so I just left it without a comment while I cried my eyes out all in my loneliness.
Yup! That's what happened.

Wanted to share a couple thoughts on a couple topics in this thread. Late to the party, but new to these forums.
First: re-signing restricted youngsters. When a player is asking for more than you would like to give him, some have suggested letting his contract expire, then letting him sit for a while before re-signing him to get his demands down. This does work, however, you need to be careful with the real good up and coming, loyal players. These guys will usually extend their contracts for cheaper if you keep them signed. Once they hit restricted free agency, their demands may go way up, and not come down again. You can also take it to the extream, and let your guy sit for up to a year (he may sign to play oversees, but thats ok), then you may be able to resign for very cheap on a short term deal. The risk there, especially if they are foreign born, they may not want to come back! Finally, I've never had an RFA signed out from under me by another team. Has that happened to anyone?
Second: Evaluating prospects: Must...not....use....editor. Its like a drug pulling me towards it. Can't stop the urge. Anyway, for some of my games (my Rangers dynasty team for example) I don't allow myself to look. Its cheating! And the game is easy enough to beat without it. But for other games I look to try to understand the game and scout/coaches ratings better. I used to focus only on Potential Ability. Assuming the player had good determination and work rate and a high potential ability, I figured I had a good player. However, I've found just as important is the rating in Offensive Role/Defensive Role. In order to have a really good player you need high potential and at least at 16 in one of the roles. I see many guys that look like they should be really good (based on ability rating) but never really take off, and I beleive its because their O/D role numbers are low. I'm still trying to research this a bit more.
So I think, when you see a report and your scout says a forward's career role is first line player, but he's projected to only score 30 points, I usually see a very high rating in Ofensive role (18-20), but potential ability is low. In this case could be around 120.
And all those cheap but efective defensive defensman (Cairns, Klucheck, Semenov, Yonkman etc) they will have low potential ability (110-125) which is why other teams give them away, but their Defensive Role rating is usually 16 or better and why they play so effectively when put in a defensive role.
Just some thoughts from what I've seen. Ultimate arbitor though is always what they produce on the ice! I've had guys that should be great based on editor rating and scouting reports, and they just stink for me, and guys who have no business beeing good, lead my team in scoring!

i have 6 guys i always trade for or sign. they come to my team in year 2 and play in the AHL for a year and then if they do well i move them to the big club if not they stay in the A until a inj or they show they can be good. if you search the european leagues you can find alot of good players .
i normally normally scout top euro leagues, top 200 picks in the draft, all players on U20 teams, plus i scout all my players from top to bottom

Little question:
Is the rookie generator only works with Regen or something it could happen that a very good english, japan, french, etc player could appear to be very good?
I mean, is there a certain freedom in the rookie generator, or everytime a player retire a rookie gets created to replace him?
I don't know if i am clear...

I think i understand you, and i think i know the answer. There is a huge amount of rookies in the game. So i would think that there isn't going to be enough for everyone in the game. So some players would be randomly created i do believe.
I'm probably wrong with that though.

So some good players are created and will not be the Regen of Brodeur, Crosby, Ovechkin, etc?

There are no random created players. Regens are the future. Period. Sorry Getz but you were wrong as far as I know. But it does not mean that Brodeur's regen will be a superstar..depends on his ratings that do not carry over. Only a few do and you can find the list in the regen thread, where these posts likely should have gone.
