Yeah, I agree this deal is definitely more about wiping Carter's salary from the books so they can sweeten their offer to Modin.

Great deal for Carolina though who were said to be really "working the room" hard at the GM meetings due to their injury situation so Columbus obviously knew who to call.

Since Carter is a UFA this summer, the move doesn't clear out any money to re-sign Modin.

What I mean is that with Carter off the books for the rest of this year the team could be in a better position to make a better deal to Modin, possibly using that money as a signing bonus for example.

Personally I think Carter is overrated and a 5th rounder is about right - you or I could have scored 30 goals last year with the Sedin twins setting you up.

What do you guys think? I personally wouldn't give him more than 2/yr, so I think they overpaid.

Also, STL re-signs Legace AND Brewer. Andy Strickland is reporting a 4-yr 17M deal for Brewer with a NTC and a 2-yr 4.3M deal for Legace. This could have some implications in the D-man trade market now that Brewer is off the table. Press Release HERE.

Well, I think it way too much, but we also have to say that he is a solid second line winger and I guess thats the price u have to pay!!
I would have prefered a 8 mil. 3 year deal, but well, never mind...


....looking at the price others have obtained in last years free agency (and I dont look at Samsonov here ) this seems a good price.

I was all for trading Sturm but I'm not going to dwell on it now that he's re-signed. He wants to stay and says he likes it here. He could've tested the free agent market but he decided he'd rather just work out a deal. Sure, I think they paid him a little too much. I would've thought he was worth $2.75 - $3 M maybe, not $3.5M. Oh well!

It looks like Chia is trying to build a team with a balanced offense. I think by next year we'll have 3 scoring lines. He's also picked up some guys that will generate offense that won't cost us so much. Chistov (if he gets regular playing time), Kobasew, and Bochenski. Not too shabby.

The Bruins also claimed Joey MacDonald off waivers from Detroit. It looks like they're trying to bring in a cheap backup to ride the pine so they can send Toivonen down to Providence for the rest of the season. This will be good for Toivonen. He needs playing time and Dave Lewis just isn't giving him any. I'm hoping they show Lewis the door in the off-season. This guy just isn't right for this team.

On the Macdonald on waivers. IMHO this reeks of one of two things:

1. Boston is not so sure about Toivonen in the future anymore. MacDonald is relatively young (26?), and I know Detroit is quite high on his future (as were the Canucks who were hoping to get a shot at him before the season started, and got Sabourin instead). Maybe something to this move more than a stop gap for the rest of this season.

2. Is Boston maybe moving Thomas to a team where a back up goalie might be needed for the playoff run. Someone who can step in if there is an injury, or just a team that needs a goalie and is not to sure about what they have now. I would use Montreal as an example here, but .... yeah right.
It won't be Vancouver as back up, because Nonis knows if Luongo goes down, nothing short of Brodeur or Kipper will reinstate any shot at the Cup. he knows he just has to pray Luongo does not get hurt.

Apparently, Eklund the no mind is reporting that the Ducks have made this deal for a 1st, and that Rob Blake has waived his no trade to go to guess where ..... Yeah For crying out loud...ANAHEIM! Nidermeyer, Pronger, and Blake??? If this is true, how far behind can Hannan and Jovonovski be to have the Team Canada defense.

And rubbish, 1 hour after posting that Blake waives his no-trade, old Ekkie comes through again...and says Blake is not waiving his no trade. This is precisely the reason I hate Eklund!

The getting a first rounder seems like it could be a prelude to an Anaheim deal for one of the St. Louis guys and my guess would also be Guerin. It's widely thought that the price StL is asking is a first rounder and a prospect to the tune of #1-3 on their prospects list. Maybe Burke is debating meeting their price.

Or (probably more likely) he has something else working to give the 1st with. The St. Louis situation though is the one log that is keeping the trading dam stopped up right now, so to speak. Once that comes loose all the "Plan B" guys like those here in Chicago would then find themselves being moved.

I know that Detroit is in talks with the Blues but there are several reasons I just can't see them doing it... first of all Detroit isn't exactly the most prospect-laden squad in the world so I have a hard time seeing them having the price to pay in comparison with other teams, and secondly it's a deal within your own division! So, should they get Tkatchuk or Guerin I think it would only be if they have a deal in place to return to St. Louis next year.

Hockeybuzz is reporting an ATL press conference after their game to annouce that they have traded for Tkachuk.

This could open the floodgates if true...

I hadn't heard too many people thinking this move was made because of a Thomas trade. I've heard some suggest that they're dealing Toivonen but not Thomas. It's pretty much a safe bet that Rask will be signed in the off-season and assigned to Providence to get used to the North American game. There is also a lot of talk about the Bruins trying to sign a big UFA goaltender in the off-season. You never know what could happen though. Chiarelli has proven anything but predictable in his short time with the Bruins.

Wow, Tkachuk's been traded to Atlanta for a rumored return of a 1st in '07, a 3rd in '07, a 2nd in '08 and Glen Metropolit.

Yup, and most people were thinking he was heading to Anaheim after they acquired that first rounder. I'm guessing they're going for Guerin now.

Rumor has it that Chia is still looking to make a deal before the deadline for the Bruins. I wonder what he's going to do? Rumor was he was looking to deal Murray (high salary) but I don't know if that's still possible with him on the IR.
