thetwatty wrote: Tue Jun 12, 2018 8:18 pm Hey guys. First post on the forum. I just recently purchased the game and just finished my first season. Im a long time CM/football manager fan. Im a bigger hockey fan though and was happy to randomly run into this game.

have a vague question about the games toughness. So I finished my first season and I am Florida Panthers. My only purchases was Derek Grant from waivers and Ilya Ljubushin from KHL. At some point of the playoffs I got Valeri Nichuskin and A. Athanasiou from KHL (through offer sheets). So the question is, how hard or easy is this game, or did I just run lucky my first season. I finished with 102 points and 8th in the league. On the playoffs I marched to final 4-1, 4-1, 4-3. On the finals id did get ran over by sharks 0-4 though.

Also Barkov won the league in points, Ekblad in d-man points (Yandle 3rd)

Was this beginners luck or is the game unchallenging when playing an NHL team?

Thanks
I have found that it is challenging at first to build a good team especially if you start out with a weak team. But once you have the team built the way you like and are somewhat adept at managing your cap, the game isn't challenging at all at the NHL level. If you want a long term challenge with this game the best thing to do is find a league to join or participate in the challenges created by other members of this site.

I am in season 2047-48 and Laine who is long retired now beat Gretzkys goal record. I believe he scored 920 over 22 seasons and Mcdavid had 912 i believe as well...

After about four years on the sidelines, I'm back in the game. I ordered EHM 1 earlier in the summer and promptly took control of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

I missed the playoffs in year one, won bronze with the USA U20 team at the WJC, and then lost the gold medal game with CAN at the WC.

Year two, I was able to get the Bolts to the top seed in the NHL Eastern Conference. Took control of the LAT u20 team and nearly got them promoted (lost to GER in a shootout). I will be starting the playoffs over the weekend.

I scrapped my editing project and went back to an old save this week.
NYR training camp 2022 - Buffalo waives Claude Grioux and his recently signed 2yr $23m contract, i figure i have the cap space and need so i'll pick him up and trade kevin hayes for a defenseman (easy 1:1 deal for tyler myers), things are going fine until game 2 of season and ryan mcdonough comes off the IR (where's he's been for like 8 months) and i'm suddenly $6m over the cap...because i'm an idiot and not paying attention... trade a couple guys for draft picks, now i'm barely under the cap and playing league minimum college kids on 4th line and only carrying 20 guys. this will be fun...

I am playing as The Wisconsin Harvesters (NHL) started the season with 0 players in my team, and a small budget. I also dont set any own tactics. So this is quite the challenge right now. At the moment i have played1 season and finished 35th out of 36 teams. Lottoballs gave me pick nr 4 in the draft. But since my team is so bad i could only get 2 extra picks at the trade deadline, no one wanted my players!

I have just won the 2019 Stanley Cup in my second season in charge of the New Jersey Devils.

When I took over at the start of 2017/18 my aim was to continue the recent progression of the organisation and to manage the cap sensibly because although, on the face of it, I was sitting with a ton of cap space that was only going to last me a couple years before some key young players would need new contracts.

The team which started the 2017/18 season was not, in my opinion, a play off team, and some work was needed. The D was frightening. Andy Greene and Damon Severson were my top D men, Will Butcher was a rookie but other than that I was having to rely on Ben Lovejoy, John Moore and Mirco Mueller, and I needed one of them to play in the top 4. Ugh. I offered forward Joe Blandisi around at the start of training camp (23; not going to be in my top 13 forwards) and LA Kings offered a 1st round pick for him. No brainer, but on the back of that I swapped my own 1st for Detroit's in a calculated move thinking that they'd be worse than me, so their 1st would be higher than mine. I stashed LA's pick away and prepared for a full season of using that pick as the centrepiece of a deal to acquire a d man. That deal came sooner than I was excepting when I got Torey Krug out of Boston before Christmas for that 1st, another pick and a prospect I wasn't banking on. I'd also been looking into Jan Rutta from Chicago, and on the back of getting Krug I was able to move John Moore and a pick to Chicago for Rutta. Suddenly Greene-Krug; Butcher-Severson and [somebody]-Ruuta on D looked an awful lot better. I had to throw in a 3rd to get Nasvhille to take Lovejoy for a 4th, but it got a $2m+ salary off the books which I then spent extending Rutta.

Offensively I was trying to make the play offs with a line up which included Drew Stafford, Jimmy Hayes, Stefan Noesen, Blake Coleman and Brian Boyle. Travis Zajac missed all but the last 18 games with an off season injury. All pretty brutal stuff, but I had a core of Hall, Hischier, Palmieri, Johansson, Zacha, Henrique and Bratt so I really just needed to do some tinkering around the edges. Stafford got me another 1st near the trade deadline (like Blandisi, a no-brainer for a player who wasn't featuring much), Hayes got a couple of lesser picks, Noesen was converted into Tyler Pitlick from Dallas and Coleman into Adam Glendining from Detroit.

We went on a 14 game winning run either side of the All Star Game which propelled us from 7th / 8th to within a couple of points of Toronto for first place in the East. We finished 2nd in the East with 53 wins and 119 points. We beat Columbus in the first round of the play offs but lost to Washington in the second in five games, but five very close games. Disappointing, but on the right path. Toronto swept Winnipeg in the Cup final.

My gamble that Detroit would finish lower than me paid off and the 1st I got from them for my own 1st became the 6th overall pick. I had a good think about what was available, but I still wanted to improve my D and was mindful that Greene had only two more seasons on his contract, at which time he'd be late 30s, so I revisited season-long discussions I'd had with Arizona about Jakob Chychurn. The 6th overall pick and Brian Boyle (!) got the deal done. I picked up Colton Sceviour in free agency and Michael Mersch on waivers from LA to construct a 4th line with Glendining capable of matching up against scoring lines.

I started the 2018/19 season with Hall-Hicschier-Palmieri; Johnasson-Zacha-Bratt; Henrique-Zajac-Pitlick; Mersch-Glendining-Sceviour with Miles Wood as the 13th forward. On D I had Greene-Krug; Chychurn-Severson; Butcher-Rutta and Steven Santini as the spare. No 14 game winning runs this time, but we finished first in the East with 52 wins and 113 points. 113 points tied us with Toronto and Winnipeg (last season's finalists) for the lead league and 52 wins was second to St Louis who had 53.

The team which started the season won the Cup. The trade deadline was the strangest I've seen. No obvious rentals moved. I'd spent all season trying to get Jordan Eberle out of NY Islanders on the basis that he was a pending UFA and they were at the bottom of the East all season, but nothing was doing. There were some minor moves a couple of days ahead of the deadline, but it was otherwise very quiet league-wide. I made serious pitches for a number of other rentals (usually a 1st, 2nd and John Quenneville, a pending RFA who was scoring in the AHL but not converting that into NHL performances) but nobody was wanting to move their pending UFAs. All very odd.

We beat Pittsburgh, Philly and Toronto all 4-1 then met LA in the Final. We might have got a bit lucky because Jonathan Quick suffered a thigh injury in the final game of their Western final against Chicago and missed the whole Stanley Cup Final. We went from 3-0 up to 3-2 before winning in game 6; revenge for the 2012 Final and *that* boarding penalty on Steve Bernier!

Next up is the challenge of managing the cap over the next couple of seasons. I am currently sitting on about $12.5m in space in July 2019 but Pavel Zacha is coming off his entry level contact and is looking for almost $5m a year. I have my back up goalie Keith Kinkaid to sign which might take another $2m or so. Although that still gives me what looks like a lot of room, I have Hischier and Bratt coming off entry level deals in summer 2020, both of whom have become top forwards and it will likely take around what Zacha is asking for just now to sign them. Hall is also out of contract and will probably want a raise on his $6m. I'm not planning on bringing Greene back once his current contract expires because I expect a drop off at his age (unless he'll take a one year, $1m-ish contract) so most of his $5m can be put to use. Zajac and his $5.750m are still on the books for another two seasons, so I have about $11m coming off the books in the course of a couple of years, but I am trying to avoid a situation where I have to start moving folk to fit all these players under the cap. As things currently stand, the team which won the Cup will start next season.

I decided to finally end my GM File as the Sabres GM, 67 Seasons later. I was ready for a new challenge. I reviewed every team and felt the Hurricanes would be the best Challenge and I want to end their Playoff Drought.

I have completed August 2018 and September 2018 so far. This is what has been completed.

Right off the bat I knew my Canes were not going to make the playoffs so I wanted to make sure I sold off 1 or 2 vets. I floated Justin Williams name out, a few teams nibbled with some minor prospects and 3/4th round picks. Nothing was too serious until I got an offer from the Maple Leafs. They offered a 2019 1st & 2019 3rd Round Pick. I simply could not pass this deal up. My first deal was out of the way and I instantly felt good about how the up-coming draft was going to look for the Canes.

Entering this season the Canes were well below the Salary Cap floor. 8 Million to be exact. My first trade dropped 4.5 Million off my cap. I was now at 12.5 short of the Salary floor. I knew I had major work ahead of me. I searched through the NHL Free Agent list, did not see much available. I then received a notification that Erik Gudbranson was put on the market. He peaked my interest, I knew I had a solid D core (De Haan, Slavin, Hamilton, Faulk, Van Riemsdyk) However Gudbranson would be a great 6th D and a solid shutdown D that I did not have. It did not take much to make the deal happen. I flipped the 3rd I acquired from the Maple Leafs and that sealed the deal. I was now back at 8 Million short of the floor.

I took a small break from making trades and built my starting lineup. I was not liking the depth I had on my right side. I had too much depth on Center. I floated Gregg McKeggs name out, he was my 7th best Center and I did not want to waste a spot in Charlotte on him. Edmonton was the only team that made an offer. They offered Drake Cagguila, this was a perfect match. I needed depth on RW and I needed Salary. This gave me 1 Million more on the cap floor. I was not at 7 Million short and I acquired my 3rd line RW.

It was now time to start Training Camp, I invited every prospect who was not in college to camp. Every player accepted, I had 47 players at camp, made for good competition. I arranged two early Pre-Season games against Montreal and Toronto. I wanted to have both games at home and help team finances. We beat Montreal 4-3 in regulation and then beat Toronto 3-2 in a Shoot-out.

After the 2nd game was completed roughly 30 players were added on Waivers. I saw that Vegas put Subban on Waivers. I instantly put a claim on him. I was now in a situation where I had 3 NHL Goalies on my roster. I traded McEihinney to the Flyers for a 6th Round pick in 2020.

I played 2 more Pre-Season games, both at home. Game 3 was against Las Vegas, we lost 2-1 in a Shoot-out. We then played Edmonton and once again that game went to a Shoot-out and we lost 4-3.

I knew with only 1 Pre-Season game left I needed to do something with the Salary Cap. I did one more double check on Free Agency and Signed Former NHLer and KHL Star Nigel Dawes to a 1 Year 3 Million Dollar Deal. This was high right but he is currently on my 2nd line so it could pay off. While doing this signing another wave of players went on Waivers. I Picked Brandon Dubinsky, his 5.8 Million Dollar Cap hit was enough to push me over the Salary Floor. My hopes are I can turn Dubinsky around and get him to put up 40-45 Points. If I do that I will be okay with his cap hit or the next 3 seasons.

Our final Pre-Season game was against Florida, just like every game we ended up going to a Shoot-out, this time we pulled out the W and won 3-2. Right after the trade I was told be D-Man Brett Pesce that he wanted to be traded because he wanted more minutes. I accepted. Nashville sent me a nice package of a 2019 1st, 2019 2nd and 2019 3rd.

Entering the 2018-2019 Season I now have Three 1st Round Picks, (Carolina, Nashville, Toronto) Three 2nd Round Picks, (Buffalo - From the Skinner Deal, Carolina, Nashville) and Two 3rd Round Picks (Carolina, Florida - Nashville sent this pick in the Pesce Trade)

It will be a long 1st season W/L wise but I am very excited to see what other Prospects or Picks I can acquire this season heading into the draft. I will post an update after the Mid-Way point on the 1st Season.

1st Season is in the books with Carolina, it was ugly.
Record: 33-40-9 (13th in East)

In-Season Trade

To Carolina:
Brendan Gallagher
To Montreal
Jordan Martinook
2019 2nd Round Pick (Nashvilles)
2021 2nd Round Pick (Carolina)

Deadline Day Trade
To Tampa Bay:
Nigel Dawes
To Carolina:
2021 1st Round Pick (Tampa)
2021 4th Round Pick (Tampa)

On January 18th I Fired Rod Brind'Amour as Head Coach. Luckily for me the Maple Leafs Fired Mike Babcock the same day. I instantly offered him a contract and how he is the Hurricanes New Bench Boss for 5 Seasons.
On February 8th I fired Mike Bales as an Assistant Coach and just like the Babcock signing offered Barry Trotz and Assistant Coaching position after he was let go by the Islanders, he accepted and will be my new Forward Coach for 4 Seasons.

Resignings
Hayden Fleury - 2 Years - 1.5 Million Per Season
Trevor Carrick - 2 Years - 1 Million Per Season
Malcom Subban - 2 Years - 1.65 Million Per Season
Teuvo Teravainen - 6 Years - 6.55 Per Season
** Remaining signings were AHL depth Players

Even though I finished 13th in the East and 24th Overall I still managed to win the 2019 Draft Lottery. This was a no brainer and I selected Jack Hughes.
With my Second 1st Round Pick that I acquired from Nashville I selected 6'3" Russian D-Man Ilya Mironov. (He will be playing 1 more year in Russia)
With my Third 1st Round Pick that I acquired from Toronto I selected 6'3" Power Forward Nolan Foote (He will be back in Juniors for this season)

Free Agent Signings
Joe Thorton - 1 Year - 1 Million
Justin Williams - 1 Year 2.2 Million (I traded Williams to the Maple Leafs before the season started I got a 1st Round Pick (Nolan Foote) & a 3rd Round Pick (Used to Acquire Erik Gudbranson) Maple Leafs did not re-sign Williams and I am right at the start of Training Camp 2019 and Williams agent approached wanted a try-out, great turn of events with Williams)
Travis Konecny (RFA Offer Sheet) 3 Years at 3.6 Per (Philadelphia was in cap trouble and did not match) This only cost me a 2nd Round Pick. Very Nice Pick up.

Training Camp Trades.
I was in roster trouble with Hughes and Svechnikov being on my my full-time roster now. Brock McGinn was the Odd-Man out.

To Carolina:
2020 - 3rd Round Pick
2021 - 2nd Round Pick
To Dallas
Brock Mcginn

The other move I had to make was I buried Brandon Dubinsky and his 5.8 Cap hit to the ECHL. This contract worked out great for me last season to keep me at the Salary Floor to avoid fines, however now he is my 16/17th Best Forward so he will remain in the Minors unless injuries become a huge issues and I have no one else to turn to.

Once I open the 2019-2020 Season I will post my Season 2 Opening Day Lineup and go over any pre-season moves.

My first real playthrough after two seasons of practice. Playing the Sharks in 2022. I believe I have a shot at my first Stanley Cup this season. But I have a big problem.. Star defenceman Brent Burns is starting to decline now that he's turned 37. The problem? I can't seem to get rid of him no matter what, his $8 million contract means the other teams simply can't afford him even if he is still interesting. His contract is LOOOONG as set by the database originally. Will I have to take the long term cap hit from buying him out or is there a trick how to get rid of an aginf player with a long and expensive contract?

Otherwise enjoying the game a lot, and have been able to qualify for playoffs 4 times, last time was pretty close to finals.

I don't know too, haha. :D But no.. I'm still finding new motivations. I try to create new history for some clubs. For example I won Stanley Cup for Toronto in 2131 for first time since 1967. Then I won first Cups for Nashville, Minnesota or San Jose. Most of time I'm GM of Flyers, my favourite club of course.

How are the regens looking in your save? Im in 2031 and it kinda sucks seeing defensive regens with no physical or mental attributes, but have 20's in all the technical stats. Do you build teams and let the head coach take over tactics or do you play with your own tactics? Must be crazy in 2144!

It's true that elite players in first seasons (since 2018) were much more than later. But still there is so very good players. But yeah, they can have only about 150 CA and they can be 2nd line players.

And there is fact that I use EHM editor sometimes and in one draft for cca 15 years I edited these young players to be much better. Else words, I'm creating some generational/elite players sometimes..

Ive Started an unemployed European save and am currently managing a team in Denmark as well as the Danish u20 team. Im in the year 2024 and the craziest thing ever happened. Sweden has been relegated from the World Juniors as well as the year prior avoiding relegation from winning the playout series. Im wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this before?
