Boy, oh boy, my poor Ulfie sure has upset a lot of many people...

I really should call the fella in for a meeting at our staff room and discuss the meaning of life...

(I'm drunk, sorry :tasku: )

He doesn't seem to be such a good coach by his stats in my opinion. I mean, don't get me wrong, he does have some high attributes, but I feel that some of the important stuff is low.

Anyway, I wanted to ask a question here and I know it might seem dumb, but please just stay with me here.

If you coach the game yourself, setup your own tactics, and do everything else. Then do you really need the head coach in your game?

I can understand the assistant coaches, because they are mainly the people who will coach your players in practice, but I didn't know about the head coach.

If anyone could answer that, it would be nice to know.

He's pretty good for SM-Liiga, you have to remember that. It's not so easy to sign Ron Wilson or Glen Sather unless you have a billion dollar budget, which I don't. He takes about 75 000 € per year. :-)

Yes..even if you do these tasks you need the head coach, and coach's in your game. You can do without, but it will affect your practices, and how the players play. The players are still motivated, and taught by the head coach and his assistants. Just you are doing the lines, and tactics.

My head coach is assigned to tasks in practice just as the assistants are.

In a game the Head Coach still runs the show, he just does what you ask him to if you set lines and tactics. He is still in charge of discipline and teaching etc.

And yeah Ulfie looks awesome for a non NHL team, especially SM-Liiga. Not sure if he would be good enough for the Manchester Phoenix or Wightlink though.. :-p

Thanks for the information, batdad. I figured that I would still need the head coach and other assistants, but I just wasn't sure about it at all.

I always notice that the coaches are the people who help in practice and so forth, but I didn't know exactly about the head coach himself.

Thanks again for clearing that up.

I think it's still good to have a head coach in games too, not just practices and such. In games, your coach is going to handle your line changes and stuff like that.

I guess since this thread is for "super coaches" in the game itself, I guess I can throw a screen shot your way on who I signed to be my head coach for the Blackhawks dynasty I am trying to build over time.

Chicago Blackhawks - Head Coach - Pat Burns

I loved it when Pat Burns coached the Bruins and I was pretty upset when they fired him. He's got a great approach to the game and I loved his post-game interviews.

Was that a randomized result in the game for him to have such high stats or did you use an editor? I never seem to notice him in my games. He never comes up in any of my coach searches.

I think you have to un-retire him using the editor.

I have Burns as the coach of my Red Wings team, and I didn't do anything in the editor... and he has stats like JVanderpool posted.

I wonder if there's some kind of slight variation of attributes. I tend to hire Brent Bilodeau as asst. coach, in one game he's a good assistant, in the other he's top head coach material... :-k

I am currently using the database that was created here at The Blue Line by Devils88.

I didn't edit any of the attributes and he was on the signing list when I was looking for new coaches.

I hadn't seen him before in the game, but that doesn't mean that he wasn't ever there either.

I am just glad that I have him on my team.

Wow! He sucks in my game right now. But one of the Hawks assistant coaches looks like this:

Michael Dumas

Youngsters 20
Goalies 11

Wish the last 3 were a little higher, but pretty awesome for a guy who is actually a scout at the start of the game. Promoted him....wonder why?

Burns have spent the last 3 years as a special advisor to the Devils organization while fighting cancer... If my memory serves me right, Burns was on the Devils personnel as a scout on the original database, but I might be wrong...

If you're looking for a top notch head coach or assistant GM, take a look at Yuri Yanchenkov. He starts the game as a scout for the Lightning, so unless you are playing them, you will have to wait until his contract expires after year 2. He may say he has no interest in the position, but if you offer the max allowable salary with about a 1 M signing bonus, he has always signed for me.

His attributes are all 18-19 except for coaching defense, forwards and goalies. The low coaching players attributes shouldn't be a big issue as long as you don't have him coach those areas in practise and have good assistants. Otherwise, he's excellent because of the huge attributes in adaptability, determination, motivating, discipline, man management, working with youngsters, tactical knowledge.

Well, depending on how high his forwards ability is, that has effect on shooting ability.

Can't you just set your high attributes forwards assistant coach to coach shooting practise and then it should have no impact? That's what I usually wind up doing any way, have 4-5 specialized assistants for offense, defense, goaltending, tactics and then have my HC not do any practise coaching and I guess just manage game days. It's the old Red Wings-Scotty Bowman system.

The way I remember it is that it'll take the average stats for all the coaches set to one area (e.g.: coach a has 20 cgt, and coach 2 has a 10, the stat applied to cgt would be a 15) so it'll have an impact, how much depends on the stats being used.

In my latest go round with the Penguins (I swear I'm going to play the one out!) Andre Savard had such great #'s I fired Therrien on day 1 to promote Savard. It was a long contract negotiation and he squeezed me for almost 3 times his assistants salary.

The coaching def/forward/goal are low but without doing practices not overly concerned about that, plus (as far as i know) being only asble to sign american unemployed coaches, he is a great pick-up (in my mind). kinda new so if one of his stats are bleh just let me know lol, need to learn the effects of all these.

JPoolTX wrote: Ok, now to get back onto the topic at hand. That is a bummer that Ludwig isn't highly rated on your game, but he is on mine. Anyway, I know that I like to grab Tretiak as my goaltending coach when I can, because he does pretty good stuff. All of his attributes are about 10 to 14, but his goaltending is a solid 20.

I wonder why... :-p

As for any other coaches that I can recommend to you right now. I can't think of any at hand, but I will look around in my game to see what I can dig up.
Ludwig has a Coaching Defensemen rating of 18 in my game but I don't care for his Determination of only 11. Tretiak is not in my game.

Question: When hiring staff, is it safe to assume that the higher the salary request the better the coach? I understand that a coach may not particularly fit into the role I am looking to fill but does salary indicate a better coach every time or is there a hidden rating for greed which comes in play?
