I need to quit playing favorites with flops. I've got 5 perfectly good forward prospects in the AHL and I'm still holding on to my former 1st overall pick who ended up as a fringe NHLer 6 years after being drafted. Time to cut the cord, I guess. Farewell to my own little Patrik Stefan.

Hey guys, i just recently ran across this game and i'm hooked! I used to love playing NHL 96 on mega drive but havent followed the sport since then... I have a couple of questions, not sure if they belong here on in the practice topic. I'll try here.
I'm on the second season, 3 months after the NHL draft and noticed 2 of my new players increased their skills a lot. Not sure exactly when it happened, but, comparing the screenshots i see they both gained skill in very similar areas. They both got 2 points in Balance, Anticipation, Creativity and in each of the technical skills (Total of 30pt increase). The difference is that one of them also gained a point in Strength and Influence.
Is this skill jump common? They're not even in the same practice schedule. My other draft picks didnt improve like this... even ones with higher potential according to my scouts.
Screenshots:
Tolchinsky before
Tolchinsky after
Shevyrin before
Shevyrin after
Shevyrin wasnt even supposed to be that good, acording to my scouts, i just picked him based on visible skills. He was a 6th round pick, around #175 overall.
One last question... what do you guys suggest in terms of development? Keep them in the main roster and play them on 4th line, giving them an average time on ice of about 10 minutes. Or let them play at a lower level for another season or two? They have space in my 4th line... would that be enough?
Thanks!

A lot of their increase comes with their potential and their off/def role which is set up in the db.
Their potential is set at a certain randomness and you probably lucked out and got high result on Shevyrin for example.
High potential and high Offensive role makes them increase with good training.
I would not have them play on the fourth line. They need to play more. I'd send Tolchinsky back to juniors and have Shevyrin in the AHL.

Sometimes their status changes after being drafted. No way to tell before

How are the rules here? Some guys can just be sent back to juniors. Is it because the amount of years of their junior eligibility?
The game sometimes handles prospects a little oddly, but here are some quick rules that cover most situations -
Drafted out of Canadian Major Juniors (QMJHL, OHL, WHL)
18 year olds*: Juniors or NHL. May not play in AHL or ECHL, not eligible by league rules
19 year olds*: See above.
20 year olds: May return to their junior team for "overage" season, but the junior club is only allowed very few spots (I think it's 2 or 3 - 3 in the Q, 2 in the O? I forget off hand) for overage players and it's not terribly impressive for a 20/21 year old to be dominating 16, 17, 18 year olds. Eligible for ECHL, AHL or NHL (naturally).
21+ year olds: ECHL (though the game doesn't recognize it, only players on entry-level contracts may be sent to the ECHL without first obtaining permission - again, game doesn't recognize this rule), AHL or NHL. Junior eligiblity has expired.
* - Players that have played 4 years of junior ARE eligible to play in the AHL (usually those that have gained "exceptional status") - I don't know if the game recognizes this, I've never tested it.
** - "Underage" players may join their respective pro teams or their affiliates once their CHL season is complete - and only after it is COMPLETE, the game does not recognize this and it's infuriating at the AHL, NHL and Major Junior level. Losing your best junior player because the NHL team needs to sign him during him the Championship round...come on...
College players may be signed "early" and be sent to the AHL as 18 or 19 year olds (trying to think of an example, I think Chris Bourque might qualify here) (however, I don't think I've ever done this and then had to send the player down to the AHL - I'd be curious to know how the game handles it if the former NCAA player was signed BUT also had CHL rights and junior eligibility, would it not allow you to send him to the AHL?). Similarly, Europeans may be sent to the AHL after they are signed - the names Jiri Tlusty and Niclas Bergfors come to mind here as citations. The game does not (to my knowledge) recognize the NHL's clubs ability to loan a player back to his European club. I also believe that there is a rule somewhere (which I may not get completely right, help me out if you know it because I'm going off memory) that Swedish players NOT chosen in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft that have signed their Entry Level Contract at or before the age of 19 may NOT be sent to the AHL but MUST be returned to their Swedish team. First round picks (see: Larsson, Adam) may be sent to the AHL at the club's discretion or returned to their Swedish team. There's no chance the game would recognize that as it's way too complicated and it's a new rule.
* - Collegiate players may leave their college team to pursue a Major Junior team if a team holds his rights and he has junior eligibility but a player may NOT leave his junior team and go to college. The NCAA recognizes the CHL (again, QMJHL, OHL, WHL) as a professional entity because
teams like Windsor, London, Quebec, etc. pay their best players despite league rules players receive a stipend for expenses (among other things).
** - NCAA players are not eligible for NHL training camp as it assumes the team will a) pay the player for his services b) provide "free" services to the player such as lodging, travel expenses, equipment - thus, making him ineligible. The game does not recognize this, but if a NCAA player so chooses, he may pay his own way to a training camp and still retain eligibility.
I think I covered most of the scenarios? Any further questions or corrections, please don't hesitate to post...
I did this twice. I'm new here (will post in new arrival say hello thread or whatever shortly) and just playing my first "real" sim through game. I'm playing EHM 07 with the patch but no updated rosters (essentially the updated demo) I'ved tried not to abuse the AI too much but probably more than some here would be willing. Long story short, first draft I ended up drafting both Ian Cole and Nick Petrecki(sp?) in the first round. Ian Cole was extremely well rounded and ranked top 3, fell to I believe #8 where I made a move to get him. Petrecki fell to the mid teens and I made another move. SHortly after the draft I realized both wanted to play NCAA so I checked this site to see if that would bode well for development. It didn't look good.
So I signed both players (Both required status of "core" player) to nhl contracts, effectively removing the NCAA as an option. After training camp it was clear that neither were ready for the NHL, so i reviewed my options. I had the option to send them to either the AHL or back to juniors. I sent them both to the AHL, and checked on them frequently. Cole started to flourish, averaging 7.5+ rating over the season. Petrecki was not doing so well, occasional 7 but avg something like 6.5-6.8 rating. I didn't think this was good enough so I sent him back to Juniors. Once Petrecki was sent to Jr's he was not able to go back to the AHL until he was 20 like a player drafted out of the CHL would be I bleieve (not certain on this one)
In summary, any player I draft that wants to go to the NCAA I will sign and try in the AHL first, and send them back down to the CHL if they aren't doing well enough. My only issue with this, however, is that 18-19 stars in the AHL don't get to play in the U-20 WJC. Should this be a concern? Is playing in that tournament useful/important to a players development? I now prefer to keep them in the CHL even at 9.5 avg rating for at least one year after the draft before moving up to the AHL. This way they light up CHL, play in U-20's against best talent in their age group, and generally one less contract (I apparently went crazy and signed all of my prospects one night in an attempt to get them all more playing time in the AHL/ECHL, I wouldn't recommend anyone else doing it). Thoughts?
FYI, Cole was too dominant in second year of AHL (Avg close to 8.5 rating) so I called him up. He won the Calder and followed that by second in Norris voting the next year.
Not sure if this is the right forum, but how do you guys view the "RD/LD" with natural Right dman and "accomplished" LD with left stick? I don't understand. is it more important to play dmen on their "natural" side or on the side of their handedness? Most players like that seem to do fine either way, but is there any specific rule about dmen in that situation? I imagine you want the handedness to line up the most, but absent that I'm curious if "accomplished" at position means they are better at that particular position than the one they are "natural" at?

Also, what's the general consensus about bringing Euro players over and forcing them to play in either the AHL or CHL? I get scared leaving a Czech Slovak player in the leagues there, I feel the JR leagues either aren't skilled enough to continue development or they won't get ice time...I prefer to sign them and send to CHL if anyone has their rights or AHL/CHL
One situation I ran into this last draft (I'm up to offseason of 2011) was a swedish dman I drafted that wasn't currently under contract to anyone. a CHL team has his jr rights and I would prefer he play in JRs without having to sign him. I'm worried that if I don't sign him and manually assign him to juniors he may end up signing with some random euro team, which case is more likely? I imagine I'll sign and force him to Jr's just for piece of mind, but has anyone else dealt with this and rolled the dice? Curious to see what the most likely outcome would have been there

I always sign all my prospects when i get a warning my rights for them will expire..
Since i have a great team already so on draft i pick up among last im not in a hurry to get guy to my team too young.
Anyway as i said i sign everyone and then if there is a chance to put them back to CHL if not i check their stats and send them to one of the farm teams..as Phoenix Yots have farm teams in AHL, ECHL and CHL its good to give guys time and build them up. Some are ready already for AHL and i put them there if i see they dont get much time i put them to ECHL etc...Some that are mostly enforcers or really one way guys they start in CHL and if they do good they get next year chance in ECHL etc. So first 3y of their entry NHL contract almost noone play an NHL game in my team.

For prospects from the CHL I usually don't sign them until two seasons after I draft them (when you lose their rights). The only time I make an exception is if the player is already good enough to play as a top 6 forward or top 4 defenseman on my team. Same thing goes for NCAA prospects except if the prospect is considered 'close to his potential' in which case I will sign him and send him to the AHL or ECHL.
I find that whenever I sign a player and then send him back to his CHL team it completely ruins him. I've had some great prospects who I've sent back to juniors only to have their attributes drop by 4 or 5 in most technical categories within the span of a few months, and there was absolutely nothing I could do to stop it since they are stuck there for the remainder of the season.
European prospects I handle on a case by case basis depending on the strength of their league and how good their teams coaches are. If they have bad coaches with or coaches with a low 'Working with Youngsters' attribute then I will usually sign them and send them to my AHL team where I have very good coaches. I also never like leaving my good prospects to play in obscure European leagues, if they aren't in one of the bigger leagues like KHL, SEL, DEL etc. then I will sign them.

Most of the time when I try to check the coach of the team my prospects are going to I don't see anyone under personnel. Is this common? I feel like I may have made a mistake when I started the game by only having the NHL being selected, is there a thread I should read about this and the differences it makes in overall gameplay?

My question is I'm at January 10th 2008 where i currently serve as the GM of the Oilers, just had Finland get pushed down to Division 1 for the next season and Sweden fired their GM. My question is if i take one of those jobs along with my Oilers GM job my question is whats a good way to scout players for those Countries U-20 Teams. Yeah there is CHL for the World Junior Tournament Dec 26th to January 10th but for the rest of the year those teams play in other tournament games. Whats a good league to scout for players for the tournaments?

Wouldn't you just scout the appropriate Elite/Junior Leagues? Each hockey Nation has at least one Junior League (names/details of the Junior Leagues will depend on the database you're using)

YOu do not have to scout for World Junior teams.
1. You get all given to you for that team and know everything rating wise about them.
2. You can only GM and head coach, and cannot hire scouts or anything anyway.
3. You can only GM for the term through the championships and will be released afterwards every single seasons.
4. Olympic Teams for Canada you have to take the GM job in August for Deutschland Cup and follow all the way through and will be released after Olympics regardless of result.

Batdad...
I found a way around it... If i am a GM of a professional team aka NHL/AHL/ECHL or Major Juniors OHL/WHL/QMJHL you can use ur scouts from those teams to scout the Junior leagues to find players.. If your a GM of a european team who gets regulated such as Sweden or Finland type thing or Czech Rep you dont get let go after each tournament unless they fire u..

The reason why i wanted to scout for the U-20 team was because there are players like Erik Karlsson and OEL and that have good ratings at age of 16 but were never named to the team..

I know this is the draft/youth/prospects thread but in ehm 2007 history anyone have any huge upsets in world Juniors. In my file I had in my second season now so 2007-2008 season, Norway finished 1st in Group A ahead of Russia, Slovakia, Czech Rep and Finland, in the semi finals they beat Russia 3-1 and now play USA for Gold..

Does anyone know if there is somewhere in the game where we can see how many draft picks we have in certain drafts? I'm still in September, but I'm clearing out players for picks. Thanks for any help.
