This question is probably just for Manimal, but in case others have some feedback (and in case other editors read it in the future).....what do you use for the starting height and weight for players under age 21? The known IRL height/weight? Or do you adjust it just a bit to factor in the "growth" the game might cause?

It seems from the research I've done (link below) that around half such players gain height/weight at start-up....but as Manimal has pointed out, who gains what is quite random! A quick overview shows about half gain height/weight, but there's seemingly no logicalness to who gains, and how much they gain...
http://www.ehmtheblueline.com/forums/vi ... 110&t=8146

In the 1974 database there are many young players in created leagues (and in major Junior/College); currently the created leagues are
- PreJunior and Bantam (these players should really be in the leagues that already exist in game, and they will be eventually!)
- PeeWee, Atom, and Novice
So I'm wondering what should I do about their starting height/weight?
Use the known IRL height? And have some players be a bit bigger than they turned out?
Use an adjusted/lowered just a bit height/weight? And have some players be a bit smaller than they turned out?

Thoughts?

P.S. Thanks much to Moses for the needed data for Goalie Wins in a Season Records.....they too are now entered!

That is a tricky question.
As I said in that thread, I can't find a pattern in the growth at start up. :dunno:
We know this game gives advantages to bigger players.
I'd probably set the real size to the older (19+?) and reduce the younger players known size by a certain percentage.

Are you using the strength calculator? I am. It sets a good standard and then I tweak guys who I know are very strong or weak.
For players under 21 I reduce the number by one as they are really kids after all

Thanks very much for the reply Manimal...valuable feedback!

Manimal wrote:Are you using the strength calculator? I am. It sets a good standard and then I tweak guys who I know are very strong or weak
I'm aware of it (from doing the QMJHL research), but I haven't really used it yet with the 1974 db.

I do see a great value in using it though, as
#1 it converts the inches/pounds to cm/kg for height/weight
#2 it provides a range for the Strength Attribute
Anything else about it I'm missing?

Thanks

Nope, that's about it

Thanks so much! I'll get them entered later this week

FYI

Assuming Arch is able to fix the "weird name issue" over the next week (likely), I expect to send the db to the testers at the start of next week.
I get this Thursday/Friday off from work, along with the weekend, so I'll use the extra freetime on the db.

Recent activity has included the editing of NHL Referees - names and (when available) DOB/Birthplace of historical refs replace the modern refs, AND I've also edited Attributes (hopefully allowing for much more Interference/Roughness)
Currently I've been adding to the youngest of players currently in the db (Novice League, ages 6-8)....adding players like Craig Simpson, Wendel Clark, Mark Recchi, Theo Fleury, Brian Leetch, Curtis Joseph, Mike Richter, Bill Ranford, Luc Robitaille, Gary Roberts, Adam Graves, Al Iafrate and many more!

Regards

Hi fellas,
I am now pondering on this for the whole 8 days since you posted it:
does this mean you'd be able to export the 'Forenames/Surnames', edit it in Excel and load it back into EHM? This would be useful.

Besides, is this method also possible with players itself, i.e., would it be possible to create new players in Excel (or so) and load them into the editor? Now this would be truly awesome! Then I could populate/update tons of the junior leagues in germany and so on. Prevents from having stupid names in EHM!

But anyway, I'm looking forward to your History DB, thanks so much for your efforts.

Cheerio

"Yes, it's possible - but only if you're happy to get your hands dirty with C/C++ programming" is what Arch says in this thread http://www.ehmtheblueline.com/forums/vi ... 110&t=8962

I've sent the database to Arch to get the "weird name fix" done!

ALSO I've tryed looking at the NHL Individual Yearly Awards (staff_comp_history file) using a HexEditor and all it did was hurt my head! But I did manage to basically "blank" the file, so the game starts with no modern NHL Award history showing. Here's an example, the goalscoring Maurice Richard Award starts in 2006-07...

Yes, after posting I read deeply into all of the C programming bits and pieces throughout the forum and I started setting up a little program. Not soo easy, but I used the nice intro - thanks Archi! Still not sure where to find First and Second name of a player, and what Player_info.dat does, but I'll figure it out!

Ah yeah, 10 mins later: figured it out: the names are assigned in the staff.dat, I guess...

The names are stored in first_names.dat and second_names.dat and those names are assigned to each member of staff in staff.dat. I'm happy to share code snippets with you if you let me know what you're interested in doing. Just drop me a PM or post in the thread Nino linked to. There's lots more code I want to share in that thread - I just haven't found the time yet.

Nino - I'll fix your names this evening.

Just a random thought, perhaps a bit off-topic except that I thought of it whilst thinking about this db and the 1979 db.

If there's one thing I could change about the game, it's the AI's seeming need to go "oh no I'm missing the playoffs I have to trade the whole team!" Probably just wishful thinking, but it'd be nice if the propensity to make so many trades could be reduced. On a similar note I wish the AI would more often resign players, it may be just me, but it bugs me to see good players sign here for 2 years, then go there for 2 years, then somewhere else for 2 years... I'd hate to see Sittler or Lafleur or whoever end up playing for 10 different teams over their career...

I'm hopeful, as this is what I'm trying (along with editing some Management Attributes too)

I've fixed the names issue and have emailed the database back to Nino. It was a bigger task than anticipated, but I think went okay.

I don't know if I caught 100% of the names, but I'm certain I caught the vast majority. The ones that may have slipped through the net are those that were capitalised - but I do know I caught quite a few of them (and maybe all of them - it's hard to tell with there being 30,000+ surnames and about 9,000 first names).

Great news, Nino!

I haven't worked on the photos for a few days... it gets boring at times. But I'm just getting to working on it some more. I'm going alphabetically by team, just starting the Habs now.

Greetings!

Currently doing a test with the database size at Full and all Leagues selected (Enhanced)…..as expected, it goes slowly! Two hours in and we`re closing in on January 1st of the first season!

Also LOTS of Editing going on too!
- Edited NHL Management Attributes (completed Chairman, President, GM so far)
- Edited NHL Team Attributes (completed Fan Support, Market Size, and Team Reputation so far)
- Reviewing/Editing NHL team Affiliations
- and more!

AND I`m adding another (non-playable) feeder league - the Tyke Minor Hockey League! For players age 3 to 5…..I`m adding players like Sakic, Shanahan, Modano, Roenick, Linden and more! With the permission of Lazion I`m using some of the Attributes he created for his 1998-99 database to help speed up the inputting of these players – THANK YOU Lazion!

Regards :-)

EDIT - Just saw this during the test, thought it was kinda cool.....here's a screenshot of Canada's U20 roster (during the first season)

Bothwell Ashby and Hill as the highest rep players. Too funny. Especially when you have Bossy, and Dale McCourt on the team. AWesome.

McCourt-Was supposed to be the saviour of the Detoilet Red Wings back in the day. They were totally in love with him. All scouts were. He was the Alexander Daigle of the area. But as a teenager...kid was a super stud.

Also awesome that Edwards and Sauve...a future tandem for the Buffalo Sabres are the goalies. And Doug WIlson...I hope you have him rated for the hardest shot! kid could fire the puck back in the day.

BTW I am not criticizing the fact that the game is giving higher reps to certain guys at the young age....it is just cool. Doug Wilson was real good as a kid too.

I'm pretty sure over the long term Bossy will produce much more than Bothwell/Ashby/Hill combined! HaHa
And did you notice Bossy's two years younger!

batdad wrote:And Doug WIlson...I hope you have him rated for the hardest shot!
Absolutely! Along with guys like Al MacInnis...

And did you notice Ed Staniowski was the #1 goalie ahead of Edwards/Sauve?.....Staniowski was another player who was better in junior than he was in the pros

FYI I haven't reviewed the size yet of non-NHL players, as I'm still deciding on what reductions to make based on age/size (to try to account for the games random height/weight increase at start-up...I'm hoping to complete this this weekend)

Well once again Gretzky was signed as an 18 year old Free Agent!....before or after the Draft? I'm not sure.....
So I did a bit more eiting and now another test (it has to be 5 in-game years, so it takes awhile)

Something I thought was cool though......like IRL the Russians are staying in Russia! they don't have an NHL Release Clause, but (see screenshot) that's not stopping NHL teams from still unsuccessfully pursuing players like Yakushev

Maybe NHL teams will end up wasting high draft picks on Russians they end up being unable to sign.

Positive for the player - possibly a better chance to score a steal in the draft; negative - a bit unrealistic. But overall I think that's not so big of an issue, small price to pay for the accuracy!
