Ya gotta love arbitration. Slag the player, smack him around...get the ruling, and sign the guy no problem. Sheesh this league is whacked.

Yeah but after this season Avery won't play for the Rangers again. They kind of burned that bridge.

Someone burned a bridge with Avery? HAh,...so we have the score at 2 Billion to 1 for bridge burning...Avery of course in the lead.

LOL! Yeah, he's a jerk but he's gotten himself in check since he's been with the Rangers. I heard Shanny was a good influence on him. I'm wondering if all that progress is out the window now?

Bah,,yeah that will last. Avery is a dufus. He played what 1 month or 2 months. Either way that is about the maximum life span for good behavior for an Avery. He did the same in LA when he went there, about a month or two.

I guess we'll see. It's a shame he's such an idiot. If it wasn't for his attitude, he's be a player I'd love to see on my team.

Heh yeah it's pretty pathetic to be honest.
Anyway how does the arbitration/qualifying offer/offer sheet thingy work exactly ?

It's apparently $12.5M over four years. Good signing for NJ.

To keep your rights for a player who's contract is ending and who is eligible for restricted free agency, the team have to make a qualifying offer. Otherwise the player will turn unristricted free agent come July 1st!
If you tender an offersheet to a restricted free agent, the team who owns his rights have 7 days to match the offersheet - if they decide not to match, they will recieve compensation in form of draft picks. How many draftpicks, and how high draftpicks they get is based on the salary offered to the player by the outside team. For instance, in the Penner deal, the Ducks would get a 1st round, 2nd round, and 3rd round from the Oilers and in the Vanek deal, the Sabres would get four 1st round picks from the Oilers.
About arbitration - if a rfa and his team cannot get a deal done or the player thinks that he would get more money by letting an arbitration judge decide his salary, the two parts will go to salary arbitration. This means that the team will put an offer on the table and the player will put the salary that he feels he deserves on the table. Then the two parts will argue why they think the player deserves (or not deserves) what he wants. This could get nasty, as in the Avery situation, as the team will argue why the player doesn't deserve his demanded (or wanted) salary and why the arbitration judge should rule in favor of their offer. After the judge have made his ruling, the team will either accept the ruling and sign the player, as in Avery's case to a one-year (always one-year deals in arbitration) deal paying him $1.9M. If they don't accept the ruling, the player will become an unristricted free agent...
I hope that's what you wanted to know...

Alright, thanks, I knew most of that but you definitely solved the mystery how they're related to each other for me

No... Both Malone and Bouwmeester were awarded two-year deals last year.

This is what I love 'bout the blueline... You think you have it all down, but then someone enlightens you... Thanks Systemfel! However, are everyone eligible for 2-year deals or only the ones who are up for arbitration for the first time...

I'm not sure, all I read last year was that players can ask for it, while teams can't.

Aha, now I know... Both Malone and Bouwmeester got one-year deals as restricted in '05 and then two-year deals as restricted in '06...

ahhh... thank you, that answered a lot of my questions too, so when will we find out about Penners offer and if it has been matched, will that be thursday the 2nd??? im so eager to find out what we'll do

That's right. We're comin' up on the day with the big D... I actually think that Burke will let Penner leave and take the draftpicks he get's for him... Lowe is clearly overpaying for Penner and what it all will come down to is the fact that Burke needs to resign both Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf next summer... And if he decides to match Penner, that contract will set the tone for those negotiations... Perry and Getzlaf are clearly more important pieces of the Ducks pie than Penner...

Rumor has it-Burke was one of the first guys to call Nonis and say "You have to match, you have to match. It will screw up the entire league if you don't" Then 27 other GMS (including Lowe, excluding Clarke) called and did the same.
If Burke does not match, he is just as bad as Lowe. Well...almost as bad. He cannot let this happen. It will open too many floodgates. Brian will not be the one to let this go. I bet he got calls from 28 GMS...including Paul Holmgren.
I say no way, no how does he let Penner go. He will not want to be the first guy.
But I have been wrong before...once.

We'll just have to wait and see... Burke sure isn't happy with the whole thing, that's for sure. But hey, this is the new NHL and this will happen again, and again...

100% agreed, the ducks i honestly believe will not match the offer, even though i like Penner, Perry and Getzlaf are huge in the future success of the team, and we can't afford to have the same thing happen to them that has happened to Penner, otherwise we're screwed

No way Burke is the first to let one walk. No way, just cannot see it. Time to put up or shut up about poaching and salary increases that are drug incduced Brian. Today it is time.
I just believe there is too much pride in Brian to not match. Just a hunch, and the media here seems to be thinking along the same lines. On the radio anyway, although some think he will let him go.
if he does, I will at last have the proof. As many have said Burke will be a hypocrite if he lets Penner walk with all he has said/done in the past.

WOW! Parise signed a four Year Deal for only 3,1 mio. a year. That's awesome cheap, if you look what other Players , not near his Caliber, got this Year. Excellent Signing, Lou......

What are you thinking about this Bonus Clause Theater.
Last Year as i heard from that, i couldn't believe it. First the Owners make a Salary Cap and then undermine it with the Bonus Clauses. i.e Teemu Selanne 2,5 mio. + 2 mio if Ducks reach Playoff, Dominik Hasek also has a Playoff Bonus Clause that pays him nearly 2 mio. this year again.
I find this behaviour extremly unfair. hey, i sign a player for 1$ (that counts against the cap) and pay him 3.999999 mio $ as bonus if he plays one Game. You think this cannot happen??? WRONG. not this drastical but
Rangers pay Shanahan 2,5mio and another 2 mio. if he plays 10 nhl games. they would have had a hard time to resign lundqvist if shanny would be paid 4,5 against the cap (how it should be).
The NHL is darn stupid to allow this.
some will say that this are "brilliant moves" but i call them illegal.....but who cares what the fans think..

The bonus clauses are only allowed to the older players, if I understand it correctly. I think they did this so that teams wouldn't give huge contracts to older players. Instead they allow them to pay them less but if they reach certain goals, they can earn more. If I remember correctly, it counts against them on the next cap though. I'm not certain though. I'd like somebody to back that up.

The bonuses are only for old men, and young kids. I have no real issue with it at all. It makes them play hard, and replaces cash given to them up front. Bonuses are counted in the cap. Full bonuses. Look at Crosby on an entry level deal....his cap hit is 3.75 mill. for every season including rookie year. Cause of the bonuses. Max he could get is what $850 thousand as base pay?
Come on Burkey...match..don't match..just want to hear what you have to say. It will be fun. Come on...
