I'm 5 games into Season Two with the Drakkar and Gatineau has signed my head coach away from me.
According to the rules, I can't sign a UFA non-player as a head coach but must instead appoint one from one of my current assistant coaches/scouts. Do I have this right?

That's some bad luck! I had a similar problem in the last challenge. Another OHL team signed my head coach to be their GM, so I lost him.
You are correct. You cannot just hire a new Head Coach. You must hire someone that has been in your organization for the past 6 months (either a Assistant GM, Assistant Coach, Scout, or Trainer).

So if I've interpreted the rules correctly, I can appoint one of my current staff to Head Coach and then hire someone outside the organization to replace that individual. For example, if I appoint an assistant coach (he's been there more than 6 months) then I may sign a new assistant coach.
I just want to make sure I've got this right before I go forward with anymore games.

You can play as many as you want to, but you'll only get points for the seasons that have enough players in it (can't remeber the figure, look in the rules)

So following the 2007-08 season, I drafted a couple of goalies in addition to the two I'm carrying forward but neither of my new goaltenders were interested in signing a contract. So I started the 2008-09 season with only 2 goalies under contract... I must have offered the two goalies I drafted several contracts and it was rejection after rejection.
Anyway, I'm about 25 games into the season and both goalies just went down to short-term injury. I went back to look at the rules to see if I'm at the point where I may sign a goalie to cover in the interim, and I just now realized that I was supposed to carry THREE goalies at all times. So I'm in a bind.
Do I go back to the offseason 3 months ago and sign a UFA goalie to put myself to the 3 goalie minimum (since my two draftees don't wish to play for me) or do I keep going from where I am (25 games in) and sign my UFA goalie to cover until my no. 1 or no. 2 return? Or is there some other option out there?
Yeah, I know. I screwed myself badly here.

Hmmm... this is kind of a tough call. You really should have made sure that you had 3 goalies under contract. This includes making sure that the goalies that you draft want to play Major Junior. You can draft all the goalies you want but if they're planning on playing in NCAA or if they're Europeans with no interest in leaving home, it's not going to do you much good.
Go ahead and sign ONE goalie of Normal or worse reputation. As soon as one of your goalies returns, release him. I won't give a penalty this time but you really need to make sure you take the 3 signed goalies into account when drafting and such.

I'm sorry. I had hoped to get through this challenge without making any mistakes but the 3-goalie rule completely slipped my mind. At the 2008 QMJHL Draft, I had several potential overagers including one of my goalies and decided to release him to get under my Reserve List limit expecting to draft one and then sign him... unfortunately, the two goalies I drafted were both American (even though one indicated he wanted to play Major Junior hockey) and would not accept any contracts I offered. Next time, I'll remember to keep three goaltenders at all times.
Pleading ignorance isn't something I believe in doing and I do appreciate the leniency.

As it turns out, I was entering a 7-day break during the Canada-Russia Challenge and both goalies are back to light practice during that time so I do not need to sign a goalie. The fact remains, I was ignorant of the challenge rule on 3 goalies.
Just a quick note for future reference--there are no goalies that can be signed with Normal or worse reputation. I spent nearly 45 minutes checking each and most were not inside the territory for the QMJHL or needed to be drafted. There were four goalies (all American from MA, ME, VT and NH respectively) who refused to play in the Q.
Again, thanks for the consideration.

Two short questions.
1. Wich leagues feed qmjhl and wich ones you scout?
2. English is not my native language so... Am I allowed to sign my unsigned prospects in the first season?
I know this challange is over but I am playing it to see how good or bad I am. currently 5 wins and 4 losses but I did sign few prospects.
Thanks in advance

1. Several. Try doing a player search and filter it by age and players based in QMJHL-areas. Then you will see what leagues the players are in.
2. Yes
We will soon start a new challenge!
This time in the NHL with the new roster-upfate

Thanx for quick reply. I sure will join in for next challange. If I want to check where I stand as compared with other managers in this challange 18, where do I go? Is there some sort of table in this forum?

When I'm uploading my stats, should I write my "Average Club Salary" or "Total Annual Club Salaries" in the payroll-box?

by thunderbug
Average Club Salary, as that is the one for your NHL team. Total Annual Club includes your minors as well. Not that you should really have high paid players down there.

Still looking for answer bout personal tactic settings. While I wait for answer I have few more questions. Do you use nhl rinks and face packs? Are they compatible with newest roster base? if yes please post a link for download. Thank you very much

This date is just cosmetic or is it crutial for face pack to work?

It's crucial for the facepack to work. It has to be the same date as the db. As the new dbs change birthdates on the players, you need to on facepacks as well.

Do the rules about hiring from with and only firing one assistant coach a season apply to your farm team as well, or can you do whatever you want there?

There is a thread called
"Post your screenshots here" in the challenge forum. We're using the same thread from challenge to challenge. I know in the last challenge people just posted the screenshots but moving forward we should post "Challenge 19.1" for challenge 19 season 1 screenshots and "Challenge 19.2" for challenge 19 season 2 screenshots, and so on. This will make them more easily identifiable.

You can hire and fire however you want, without restrictions, on your farm team. The rules only apply to your main team. Keep in mind, the "hiring from within" on your main team does not allow you to hire somebody away from your farm team's staff. When hiring a new NHL coach, you must hire somebody that is already on your NHL staff in some capacity.
