Yep, Lombardi screwed up big time. Dan seems to be able to get people to do that, just by making them think he is a good NHL goalie. Especially Crow.
Aye, I wasn't sure either. I had to look it up.
He must be amazing in practice -- and perhaps elsewhere -- because I don't know what GMs have seen in him when they watch him on the ice during a game. He can't move and he can't control rebounds. His glove is terrible. He can't handle the stick. He doesn't do anything well. By just standing in the middle of the net, he'd be more of an effective goalie than he is now.
Still, I love our young talent. All we really need is an actual starting goalie and a defenseman or two and we'll be competing for a playoff spot. Jack Johnson might come over as soon as next year, so that'd be a big help.

Johnson has made it very clear he intends to stay in college for the full ride; I'd be very surprised to see him int he NHL before he graduates, especially to go to a young team. Were he to have his rights owned by a more veteran club like say Detroit or Dallas I think he'd have played this year in the NHL but I think he'd much rather play at Michigan and live the life of the student athelete instead of playing 82 games and travelling etc.
But back to Danny Boy yeah he has to be one amazing practice goalie; I think he's one of those guys just like Thibault was in Chicago; has he required skills but has near 0% of the mental toughness required. For those guys it's a downward spiral; they get rattled at the first sign of trouble and lose confidence which causes them to make even worse decisions which lead to worse results and less confidence and then even worse results etc. they are good to excellent when things are going their way and they are winning games and stopping pucks but once that downward spiral starts they quickly become useless.

Don't you think Johnson leaves college this summer to have the chance to play with Rob Blake, who might be retired when JJ graduates?

No.

there have been recent rumblings from reporters in Michigan that have said something to the effect of, "since the world juniors, it seems like Johnson actually looks frustrated by being in college still."
i don't think it's a guarantee by any stretch of the imagination, but I wouldn't be surprised either.

Found a couple of links that regard that subject, not quite sure what to make of it though.

My thought is that if he had any intentions of coming out this summer Carolina wouldn't have dealt him for fear of him not signing until he graduated.

That's one of the reasons I heard for Stuart signing for LA, to work with Lombardi again.

I've heard there was some kind of fraction between JJ (and his parents) and Rutherford.

Gonna post a trade while I'm at it.
TSN: The Calgary Flames have traded right winger
Chuck Kobasew and defenseman
Andrew Ference to the Boston Bruins in exchange for defenseman
Brad Stuart, center
Wayne Primeau and a conditional draft pick.
Another great trade by Sutter. He's a magician at the negotiations table. Calgary's defense is even more stacked now.

I firstly was impressed how Chiarelli started as a Bruins GM, adding Chara, Savard, picking Kessel in the draft and adquiring Rask for Raycroft....but the Jurcina deal and this one make no sense!!!
C'mon, was Kobasew and Ference really the best thing we could get for Stuart??? I really hope that conditional draft pick is the first or second round because if not, than.....
Oh wait.....we are going to give the Flames a draft pick and not viceversa as I first got, right??? AWFUL!!!!! I really cant belive it...

Just saw this on TSN! Big move for the Flames - Best D in the league?
Good to see Chiarelli get something back too. Kobasew is fast as heck and only 24, so he's got some good years ahead. And Ference is a good bargain for the grit and energy he'll bring to the B's.
Sweet deal for both clubs. But props to Sutter for nabbing Stuart - K.Lowe must be ready to blow a stack! Maybe Brewer to the Oil now? We'll see...
Cheers.

Maybe this trade isnt as bad as I thougt as both Stuart and Preems are UFA's at the end of the season and it doesnt look like Brad was staying in Boston. As far as I could read around there both Kobasew and Ference have signed multi-year deals and they are both pretty young.
Also the conditional draft pick is only handed out if Stuart resigns in Calgary, right??
Well, maybe the trade isnt that bad....

I'd say that's getting a helluva lot for players you were going to get nothing for but open roster space in a few month's time

Why would Flames get the pick ie reward if he resigns?, shouldnt it be if he doesnt?.
Makes zero sense to me otherwise, basicly you get either double reward or no reward if thats the case, but with the conditional pick this deal seems very strange indeed!.

I'm not totally against this deal. Sure, I was hoping for some highly touted prospect in return these two aren't all that bad. I've been wanting them to get rid of Primeau for a while now, so that's taken care of. And if we couldn't resign Stuart, it's good to see we got something in return. Kobasew has some Boston ties too. He played a year of college hockey at BC and then a year in the AHL in Lowell. So he's familiar with the area. That should help his transition. Kobasew has some great skating too. I'd like to see him on Bergeron's wing. Now they've just got to ship out Sturm and we're heading in the right direction. We'll probably just get a draft pick for him.

That is correct. Calgary gets a pick if they're unable to re-sign Stuart. Or so I've heard.

Is anyone knows which round is the conditionnal draft pick?
I think it's a good deal for both team. B's get something in return of Stuart instead of loosing him on the UFA market this summer. Kobasew is not the most talented player of the world, but he skates well and should be a threat offensively. And Ference defends well and would be a good compensation for the loss of Stuart i think. I most wonder about Primeau in Calgary... If i remember well, he's a center, and the Flames already have Langkow, Lombardi and Yelle as talented centers. Maybe one of them (or Primeau) will be traded before the dead line?
All in all, i think it's a fair trade. Maybe slightly better for the Flames, but the Bruins were the underdogs in the negociation, as they had to ship Stuart out. Good move for both teams.

Holy cow!!! Now that makes the trade not so good if we have to give away next years first round choice!!!...and more if we consider that we will be one of the first teams to choose...

Well, since it's a conditional pick all it really means is Calgary intends to resign him to a contract not use him as a "rental" and that is where they find the value in the deal so should they not be able to work something out with him they demanded the conditional 1st.

^ Exactamundo.
Most likely, Stuart will want to re-sign in Calgary. As I'm sure you've all read somewhere else, Stuart grew up in Alberta and has family there. His wife is from the left coast as well. With the dominant D Sutter has assembled, I don't see any reason why Stuart wouldn't sign for at least a year or two to give it a go.
If that's the way it goes down, Chiarelli keeps his pick.
Who's to say Stuart didn't ask to be traded to Calgary anyway? Mabye Chiarelli feels 95% that Stuart will sign in CGY and risks the 1st to seal the deal.
Still, smooth moves by Sutter to ask for the pick.

Someone needs to mod conditional picks into EHM.
Cheers.

I sure as heck hope not! The way the Bruins have been playing, they're looking like they're going to get a very high pick. Kobasew is pretty good but he's not worth a 1st rounder! Now if it was the other way around where the Bruins got a 1st round pick if Stuart resigns... that's pretty good.

It's not a 1st, it's a 4th rounder. So big shocker, HockeyBuzz.com was wrong.
