Plus watching him in the late reg. season and the few playoff games he was in last year, he never jumped off the ice at me The way Ericsson did. If Ericsson continues to play the way he did in the playoffs, he could make a serious run at the Calder.

After Rick Nash was robbed back in 2003, I would like to see Filatov have a great year to give the fans in Cow-Town something new to be excited about. It still seems a travesty that Barret Jackman was deemed a better rookie than Nash.
This year could be easier than last year to Leino, cause Hossa and Hudler left the team.
The exodus of forwards from Detroit this year was the only way Leino was going to see any significant time in the NHL this year. We lost, what, 4-5 regular NHL forwards and only picked up 2-3? The Wings development system is all about patience and keeping good players. That combined with the god-like scouting staff, it's resulted in a log-jam of talent. If I was a young player going into the draft, despite my Wings fandom, Detroit is the last team I would want to draft me because I would know that I'm not going to see the NHL for at least 3-5 years!

The Wings top six according to THN is thus:

Code: Select all

Franzen - Datysuk - Cleary
Bertuzzi - Zetterberg - Holmstrom
Leino is slated at the third line RW and I think that is about the position he'll play (barring major injuries). He'll probably see some 2nd PP time, but maybe not regularly. Last season he seemed to lose the puck with alarming regularity. Whether this was due to the speed/skill/physicality of the NHL game, I don't know. Just that he couldn't seem to keep the biscuit on his blade.

Dan Cleary as a 1st line RW... :-?

I actually like that line. Datsyuk for the magic, Franzen for the muscle and Cleary for the hustle. There's about 80 goals on that line. I think Cleary could be good for 25+ on a first line like this. His goals dropped a last season, but so did his ice time with Hossa in the fold. He made up for it with more assists though. Franzen is just sick for a guy drafted in the 3rd round at 24 years old. Datsyuk plays as bigger than Joe Thornton and with more skill and vision.

There is without a doubt more uncertainty with the Wings this year compared to the past decade, but with their track record, I feel confident that Illitch and Holland would not have let so much offense go if they didn't feel others in the system weren't up to the task. People can cry "CAP SPACE" all they want, but I think they could have kept Hossa if they really wanted to. They would have had to sacrifice some for sure, probably Kronwall & Stuart or Franzen, but it could have been done. I used to rant and rave against Ken Holland when he was dealing away all his early round picks for so many years, only to be shown why he and his staff are running an NHL club and I am not.

Think of it as 1A. The Wings are heavy down the middle. Franzen & Cleary are both natural centers. I would anticipate that Babcock will start the season splitting up the Euro twins to force other coaches to pick their poison when it comes to match-ups. If the chemistry/production is not there, he can always put them back together and shift either Franz or Clears to the 2nd line center.

Balanced lines are good, if you have only 1 good line, and other sucks, youre not able to win the games.

Why nobody wants Koivu back to Canadiens? I think that Koivu is better than Kovalev in some ways. Not maybe in points, but in attitude, and work rate. And stability specially.

Yeah, Kovalev makes one day four points in game and sometimes he plays "in shadows" and audience thinks is he in line-up. Koivu is makes one day one assist and next day he makes zero points but audience still remembers after match that "why they didn't score, Saku's pass was so excellent".

He was a respected player, but the fan of MTL change their mind in less then 1 week, Koivu or whatever other player can pass to superstar to the most hated player in the team with one bad game, this his the ''Zoo'' like somebody call it one day. :-D

I really hope that if a team goes back to Qc, the fan will not be like this.... I really want my team back at Quebec but darn if the fan are like MTL, i would be ashamed of it. :-D

Seen lots of names for Calder candidates...haven't seen Viktor Stalberg of the Leafs mentioned. He's been lighting it up in the pre-season, has made the team and is slated to play on one of the top two lines, and likely the power-play.
:-k

THis is not to say that it will happen, however....there are lots of youngsters who light it up in preseason and go on to well....do nothing.

Steve Kariya once led the entire NHL in pre season scoring. I liked what I saw of Stahlberg but I would never think of him as Calder Trophy candidate. He has amazing chemistry with Bozak and by the end of this month..the Marlies will have 2/3 of a very strong line.

When the real games start..things change. For example, in Vancouver Sergei Shirokov has been just as lights out as Stahlberg...7 points in 4 or 5 games and looked real good with the Sedins. But guess what? He may not even make the team. If he does...he starts with Kesler and Samuelsson and we shall see.

I saw two Laff preseason games and Stahlberg and Bozak were the best players on the ice. But the opposition was not exactly the best to offer either. So who knows. But i would not mention him in Calder running. In fact..I think you just made sure he has no hope. :-D

I don't really follow the Oilers but was it a surprise to see Schremp put on waivers? I thought he was a good prospect for them.

He WAS a great prospect for the Oilers. Schremp is a total failure, he didn't improve at all and he showed no sign of a player that is able to play in the NHL, maybe he's a ''late boomer''. In EHM he is slightly overated. :-D

I think Schremp can still be a good player. Sure he may be all about the tricks and not about the rough stuff... But the guy hasnt really been given a proper chance in Edmonton... Didn't their new GM say he was gonna give Schremp a chance this year? Maybe a waiver claim and a fresh start somewhere will give him his chance to shine... Hard to give someone a proper evaluation in just 7 NHL games though, bit like Bobby Ryan, he was given the odd NHL game every year and it didn't help him, someone needs to keep him on their roster for a season to see how he does... His 1st year in pro hockey was going great until he suffered an MCL tear late in the season just after he'd been reassigned back to the AHL...

I'd want Schremp in my team, be it just for the shooutout moves. :-D

Maybe he'll get a chance with one of the cellar-dweller teams?

A ''fresh start'' like you say is good for alot of player. Maybe this is what Schremp needs. I think like you that the GM don't really let him is chance though, i don't know what change his mind but still, for now, Shremp is a disappointment.

Schremp (trust me on this) is dumber than Brent Sopel. He has the intelligence of a slug. Really not surprised at all. Won;t be shocked if some GM picks him up though. People always try to give morons an extra chance at all of a sudden becoming geniuses. :-D

Calgary traded Anton Strålman to Columbus for 3rd round pick in next years NHL entry draft.

Ryan Bayda make contract with Pittsburgh, where he was on tryout. They make one-year-deal with two-way-clause.

Cody Hodgson sent back to junior. Brad Lukowich on waivers. Also Michael Funk and Lawrence Nycholat on waivers in Van.

Guess Cody is now captaining the World Junior team for Canada. BAck injury slowed him down, and he showed absolutely nothing to get him on the team. Grabner and Cory Schneider were sent down yesterds.

Believe it or not, with Demitra and Matt Schneider on LTIR this gives the Nucks about $4 mill in cap space. and 1 roster spot (only 22 on roster now)..let the Sundin/Foppa rumours begin. darn.

Martin Skoula has somehow got a contract from Pittsburgh even though he was cut from Colorado and Columbus. Wow.
