I've aware of the Head Coach movement a bit myself.....

The KHL and NLA have hired NA Head Coaches before.....

Not every league in Europe has a clear line between Headcoach and GM jobs. Usually there are presidents of the teams, who changes rarely and are in charge of financing and off ice stuff and there are headcoaches that 'run' a sporting side of the team (tactics, rosters)... in fact, apart from Swedish and Finnish teams, there are no general managers listed on eliteprospects team staff pages in Switzerland, Germany or Austria for example.

Somehow I didn't think about this option since I normally just use one GM per save and don't create new ones, but yeah, thanks! This saves me a lot.

But is it possible though (I just now had the time to try it) to just add my old GM in a team instead of creating a new GM? Without applying of course.

Most KHL teams have a "GM". However, a part some guys like Gross, Fedorov or Weisfeld, I am not sure what these guys actually do, because players are mostly picked by coaches. And Gross and Weisfeld pick players asked by coaches anyway...
I think they are (IRL) closer to scouts, rather than GMs, it's known that Fedorov picks foreign players for CSKA (and sucks in doing it lol) and the former Ak Bars GM always made trips to Czech/Slovakia and IIHF WC (just like most of other GMs) to see players.

UK teams usually have the GM/Head Coach, Player/Head Coach, Managing-Director roles overlapping to some degree. Either an MD/Director/GM, GM/Head Coach, or Player/Coach who also deals with recruitment.

It's really hard to model in-game as the AI tends to recruit for all those positions on start-up, particularly problematic is no Player/Head-coach role.

Not sure how relevant that is to the current discussion but something I've obviously noticed.

As an example of how bad the cap/contract situation can become...Carl Hagelin just retired in Jan 2022, not because of any injury, but because he went unsigned and "cannot support his family playing professional hockey"

German teams definately do have a split between GMs and Head Coaches. It is very rare for both positions to be held by the same person, usually it just happens for short periods after a coach has been fired. I think the same is generally true for Austria and Switzerland as well. The name of the position might vary (Manager, Sportdirektor or Sportlicher Leiter (both meaning Director of Sports), etc..) but they all fill the same purpose.

Scouts should have their own ranking list. That way you can have a better understanding of who to select where.

What is up with player development???? Nolan Patrick and Connor McDavid are middle of the road players in my sim and for whatever reason the Canadian players aren't close to developing as well as the Americans. Why is there such a love affair with Americans? Why is it that every Canadian player has such a low PA?

This new patch doesn't do awards at the end of the year

I've not heard these concerns about Patrick (PA -9 so 150-180) or McDavid (PA -10 so 170-200).....maybe you're expecting to much to soon?

I've never heard the concern about poor Canadian players/excessively good US players...
If you're aware of the PA I'm assuming you're using the EHM Assistant?
If so, could you export the data (into excel), sort by player age and nationality and give some actual data (for each year from say 14-18, what's the average CA/PA for Canadians/Americans? maybe how many over 130PA? 150 PA? 170PA?)



I do a lot of testing I'm just asking questions/asking for data so things can be made better

When I do testing I look at every Player Role separately, and what's the average and what's the high/low range.....the CA/PA ranges I usually use in my testing are worldwide (everybody), 40-69, 70-99, 100-139, 140-159, 160-179 and 180-200

I also look at all the individual Attribute averages/ranges within these CA/PA ranges (I haven't yet looked at such data "by Nation" yet, and won't have the time to do so myself anytime soon)

Not exactly a simulation related note, but scheduling at the AHL level. I'm playing as the NHL New York Rangers, 2019-20 season, noticed that while my AHL affiliate the Hartford Wolfpack have 9 Wednesday-Thursday-Friday series, but only 1 Saturday and 1 Sunday game the ENTIRE season (not counting preseason or playoffs). Lookking back, 2016-2017 had 8 Sat - 22 Sun, 2017-18 had 8 Sat - 7 Sun, 2018-19, 3 Sat - 6 Sun...just seems very weird. Doesn't hurt the gameplay or anything, just an odd realism issue.

Is it just me or does it seem like there are very few trades that occur in this game. Around the trade deadline there were only 3 deals done. Seems pretty darn low.

Looking at the first five years of my recent 1998 DB test, from December to the Trade Deadline I had 14, 13, 14, 10 and 20 trades occur; on the week leading up to the Trade Deadline I had 12, 4, 6, 5 and 6 trades occur (21 of the 31 trades occurred on Trade Deadline day)

Looking at the first four years of the sim, year-to-year (September 1st-August 31st) there were 28 trades, 22 trades, 18 trades and 20 trades


It's definitely far less trading than IRL
It may be closer to a realistic amount when considering just "genuine NHLers" (many trades IRL are minor leaguers for minor leaguers)

I admit it doesn't bother me much personally/I'm not a fan of lots of trades, but I'll point it out to Riz

It's not a huge deal although I do enjoy seeing trades especially the big trades but in the end I would rather have just a few trades than a lot of trades some of which don't make sense.

One thing i've noticed are teams not going after good free agents. For the most part the good players are picked up but it seems like older player even if they are coming off good seasons are not being picked up in free agency. Even more concerning though are some good quality goalies are not being picked up. For example Brian Elliot. Only 32 in the game and willing to sign for 1.4 million. Had decent numbers in Calgary, coming off a 37 win season but no one will sign him. There are about a half dozen teams that should be looking for a goalie like that. For example Ottawa. Ottawa has a team that should be making a run for the playoffs but currently are 7-11-4 likely because their goaltending duo is Hammond and Darling, two career backups.

FYI - assuming you're using TBL 8.2, Brian Elliot's PA is only 148, Darling's is 154 (and Hammond's is 142)

Good to know but it was not, although it was probably some variation of those rosters so that's good to know. The rosters in question were available through steam but were just recently deleted by the author for some reason. You know looking at the attributes it would appear that Darling is the better goalie so I see your point but in reality Elliott is the better goalie in real life so that's where it through me off. Even still I likely think he would get signed to a team even if it was a 1 year deal in real life given the season he had the year before. I appreciate the input though

Has anyone else had trouble with goalie development in their game? Just finished up the 2022 draft, and while I know goalies can take a bit longer to develop, there have been 0 drafted goalies make it in the NHL, even as backups. The best so far is Evan Fitzpatrick, who could possibly serve as a backup, but is <.900 SV% in that roll over the past few seasons. Anybody else who has played an NHL game, shouldn't have and only did as an injury backup basically. There is going to be a bad goalie shortage within the next few years...is this anyone else's experience or just mine?

Also, it seems way too many players (perhaps 75%) seem to start a sharp decline physically by age 33...I know players start to trail off IRL as well, but a lot of guys are still decent in their mid-30s (some even in their late 30s). At 31, Nick Holden had like 16s in skating, he's now at about a 10-11 at 33, Mike Green experienced a similar drop off...and even my goalies are trailing off badly. They become pretty useless by age 34-35.

And double-Empty Net goals all the time still get me

Other than that, everything seems to be going pretty well, I still play this game on average a few hours per day (it's basically my go-to because I can play 5 min or 5 hrs). I appreciate all the hard work you guys have put into developing this game and then the TBL rosters are just the icing on the cake!
