In line with tradition, I have split this off from the 07/08 discussion thread into a separate transactions thread.

So I hear Ted Nolan has been fired by the Islanders. I'm getting ready to leave work, so no time for a link but I'm sure it's at TSN.

Nolan must really rub people the wrong way. Still, the Islanders are a joke of an organization.

I read a bit on yahoo. nolan left because of difference of opinions in why the Isles didn't reach the playoffs last year.
Nolan- lack of quality players
Snow- team underachieving.

If anything, most people would say that team OVER-achieved.

According to ESPN.com, they part ways because of "philosophical differences."

the only good thing about the islanders (in my opinion) is they have a AHL team that is only a 15 minute drive from my house.

In the past the Islanders have been considered a joke...but consider this:

1. They stockpiled prospects galore in this last NHL draft.
2. They were the first team to go with the LONG TERM offers that have now become common place in the NHL.
3. They have a star goalie under a deal that if things keep going the way they are going is a steal in 3-5 years.
4. They revamped much of their scouting and player development staff completely a couple of years ago.

Honestly, if they get a coach in there. Watch out. And remember Ted Nolan was not Garth Snow's hiring. Things could eventually (not this year or next) get interesting on Long Island again.


That being said, I still think Charles Wang is crazy. Still want to see a sumo wrestler play goal.

Guys, I've heard this rumor on TV this morning.

A three way deal. Meszaros to Kings, Kopitar to Blackhawks, Khabibulin to Senators.

Sens still can't get to sign RFA Meszaros, and there are couple of teams interested in him. But man, if that's true, that would be hell of a movement.

I don't know why the Blackhawks would do this. Kopitar is really good but don't the Hawks already have a bunch of talented young forwards? I know they want to unload Khabibulin but why would they want to give up Seabrook or Barker? That just doesn't seem smart. And from LA's point of view. I know they need defense but do they really want to give up Kopitar? To me, this sounds like Senators fans/press wishful thinking. They're having difficulty signing Meszaros, so they're coming up with these crazy trade rumors.

It is rubbish. These guys who posted it know nothing. At best at one point it was likely a deal moving Cam Barker to Ottawa for Neil or Vermette.

Whatever...every King name is involved somewhere in this deal, as is every name in Chicago. Funny thing is the best names to come out of Ottawa were Neil, Vermette.

Some guys even picked up the rumour that the deal was done, and the NHL had said no it could not be done and vetoed the trade. This was a rumour started by a guy who runs a Blackhawks forum, just to play with the idiots.

Yeah, the same idiot who started the Jason Williams signed with Ottawa rumour is the one who got this rubbish going. Yeah, Jason Williams....never even spoke with Ottawa and signed with Atlanta 2 hours after rumor boy started.

Yeah I don't know what to think of those Gilbert, Wideman, Carle-like deals anymore. I hate it that you can get like a 500% raise (long term as well) for one good season. That's paying for potential, for what might be.
Alas, it's about what I expected, that's the market these days. There's not really an alternative. He's an absolute key player on the Bruins, arguably the most important after Savard and Chara. Pretty much the only Bruins defenceman that can not only get the puck out of the own zone safely but also create something, and run a powerplay. He's solid defensively too and can play big minutes.
Still, if he doesn't carry on the performances from last season into the next few the Bruins are a bit screwed.

I guess they are hoping a 2/3 center can resurrect his career as a #1. I hope so.

Gotta shed about 100 lbs. Peppermint Fatty York. This guy is LAY ZEE. But who knows, maybe if he does not get suspended by the IIHF, and is allowed to play (he had previously apparently signed a deal in Russia)...maybe just maybe, the BJ's did something that will help them. This guy is a reclamation project a la Gary leeman.

Really I have no idea. But if he did sign..as long as he came to play, not run the club like Messier did some time ago...I would be fine with it.

Two pretty solid lines. The whoever would likely be a rotation, including Pyatt and Wellwood.

But I just don't think he is going anywhere cept Toronto. We shall see.

Sundin announced a few weeks ago that he'll make his decision about playing or retiring on August 1st, that's to say in less than a week.

Then, replacing an aging Näslund by a more aging Sundin, and at a more expansive price... Would it really be a good move for the Nucks? Is Mats really have 2 more years in his wheels? Will he really worth his 10M$ a year? My answers would be: not so much / maybe... maybe not... / clearly no. But that's just me.

Well Sundin's clearly not worth it, but it's probably the last chance for Nucks to get a "name" on their roster, right?

Mats may not be a $10 mill player. But he makes a team that is a decent team into a team that could be considered a contender, or at least gives them a big shot at going somewhere in the playoffs.

The Canucks have the $$ and are willing to spend it. Anyone see a better way to spend it out there this off season in the free agent market? I mean, I don't. Well Sakic...but then again, he is old and may be all washed up. And he is an Av. No way he comes here, even if this is where he is from.

Mats is a solid 1st line center. This is what the Canucks are missing. Daniel and Henrik are more suited to 2nd line roles, and if Mats comes that makes playing them where they belong the option. They will be better too, because they won't be checked to death.

All his seasons are similar. MAts does what he does. Consistently. Without any help.

Now this is not to say that Mats belongs in Vancouver, or that the Canucks WILL be the best in the league with him. It is to say they will be much better if he decides to come to play in Vancouver, and decides to actually play, not just collect a pay check. mats has never done that, but neither had Messier.

Mats is the best option for Gillis to go hard after. Costs nothing but money, and the contract comes off the books when the Canucks need it to, so they can pay others.


Oh and Gisbon...It kinda shows that you don't know much about the Nucks, when you say they are in a "last chance to get a name scenario" I think they have at least one name. Perhaps the biggest name. Ever heard the name Roberto?

It is hardly like this is a last chance scenario. Mats was given the offer first day, first minute of free agency. Gillis TARGETED him, to fill the Canucks need at #1 Center...over anyone else on the market. He fits the Canucks needs the best. Hossa? Good player...does not fit a need really (Daniel, and now Bernier). Campbell? Not with the boys on our blueline. Huet-Ha. Canucks needed a #1 center big time...and have gone after the best one on the market with all their guns. Something they have not done in the past, and is likely the reason Mr. Nonis, and Mr Burke and Mr Quinn before him were fired.

Well you certainly got a point, but I was more reffering to fact that all the "big" names are off the market now, Sundin is the only who remains, well, Sakic, but you already made a statement about him, so it's sort-off last chance to get also a 'name' on their roster, sure if we are not talking about trades possibility,but you know what I mean?

Gillis targeted him, he targeted only one big player UFA, if he doesn't sign, that's gonna hurt bad, and they're pretty much 'screwed'. And as they stayed focused on this guy, others slipped away. Okay, you made it clear that their biggest hole, their biggest need is a #1 centre, and so they put all their money on this stake, but it's not guaranteed they'll win. At least they signed Demitra, a great deal imho, if Sundin doesn't come, he'll work as centre, if he does he'll work as a winger. So let's just wait what August 1st brings
