Lots of rumors have been going today about Kovalchuk will be trade in a few months. The Thrashers and Kovalchuk agent have negociate 4hrs hours yesterday and they haven't been able to get along. Kovalchuk is asking ( more is agent maybe ) 11.5 millions a year ( ridiculous ) and a 10 to 12 years deal. So, both of them don't want to negociate anymore. Atlanta is seriously in big trouble if Kovalchuk get away. And not a bunch of teams cannot accept his salary, so is Bruke gonna make him a Leaf. :-p

OMG...Lindros Kovalchuck and his demands, what will be his money worth when you won't win anything, because guess what? Team cannot afford anyone else thanks to your hugeass salary. You might be worth of 11.5m$, but winning the Cup is priceless.

Can you imagine that 11.5 millions will be like 1/5 of the team salary just for him?? The NHL should put a rules that the salary of a player can't pass 9 millions or something like this. When they put the salary cap they want to avoid big salary like Jarg etc....and now the cap is so high that we begin this again!

The salary cap was never put in place to avoid big salaries but to tie salaries to league revenue and there is already a rule about maximum salary :)

I know this wasn't just for this, but they want to avoid this for sure and what the max millions a guy can make then? This rule is a big load of s***. He already asking 11.5, the max is 15 millions a year or what, absolutey non-sense. They should put this at 8 millions a year, no more.

Isn't it 20% of the upper limit ? In that case that would account for roughly 11.5m
I somehow can't imagine Kovalchuk asking for 11m a year for 10-12 years. He's maybe asking for one of those ridiculous frontloaded long-term deals. Not that 11m isn't extreme, but if it's a 12 year frontloaded deal that probably gives you a cap hit of around 7.5-8m

Ah yes that's true, didn't think about it. Another deal that the league will ''watch closer''. :-D Anyway, he will end-up in the KHL with 20 millions a year if it continu like this.

Yes the NHL has a max % set of the salary cap for one player. From WIkipedia...it shows that one player receives a maximum of 20% for one player of the team cap. So Kovalchuk with a $56 or $58 mill cap is right at the maximum for 58 mill and is over it with that report for $56.

I stress though that these are reports. Pretty sure noone from the club or the agent would be confirming it. Yeah people here stuff, but they are usually off by a bit. And um...to Atlanta Kovalchuk is at least 20% of their team....so not a surprise to me if he is asking that much.

Getzlaf--Although the NHL Cap was not designed to completely limit the top players and to keep salaries down...it was designed in order to make sure people did not offer ridiculous amounts to top players. WIthout the limit per player...the cap would be absolutely useless and we would see total bums playing in the NHL...You know guys like...

these 3 useless bums :-D

But that maximum per player is their cap hit, not their annual salary. That's part of how a lot of teams are skirting the cap. They pay a player $10M or more per year in the early years of a contract and then substantially less in the later years of the deal.

by batdad
Yep..that is the max cap hit you are right. So Atlanta could pay in the first year $40 million and then go down to like the 20th year at $1 mill. But they do have a max set for salary decrease from one year to the next as well...the players insisted on that.

And that is the only way that Kovi gets a deal in Atlanta..one like Hossa, Keith, Luongo etc....

Kovy probably won't resign there. I think he'll be testing the Free Agent waters this year. That's just my opinion though.

Bahh... I'll give you that Giguere was a big mistake with the way he's played since he got the deal, but Teemu and Getzy (who btw, i'm still backing for 100 points :-D)... Come on! They're monsters! :-D. Maybe we should have spent over a 3rd of our cap on this overated "superstar" and these two incestual brothers. :-p

One of those incestual brothers is #3 in the entire NHL in scoring. Man he is horrid.

Selanne? Where is he? Getz is okay. And Luongo is right now at this moment the best goalie in the NHL. Bar none. He has been OUTSTANDING the last 2 weeks. Just his best defenseman is named Shane O'Brien right now. Not good.

Oh and BTW--I knew you would bite on that. Heh.

Why do I like the away jerseys of all NHL teams much more than the home jerseys? :-k

Ahah, I had to bite. I can't let you run your mouth about my ugly ducklings, even if we do suck badly this year.

Selanne's not doing bad. He was never gonna make it the full 82 games at his age. :-D He's still sharp as anythin when it comes to scoring though, 14 goals aint bad at 39.

So Halak going to have a second straight start tonight. I really think Gainey wants to show him to everybody to trade him, Price was doing a fine job since 2-3 weeks and Halak has start 3 of the last 5 or 6 games. So maybe a trade soon, or maybe Price is hiding an injury. :loveyouman: :ninja:

I don't know but I kind of wish the NHL would go back to wearing the white jerseys at home and the dark jerseys on the road. It just makes more sense. When they first started doing home and away jerseys they wore white at home and dark on the road because their wives washed their jerseys and could keep their whites clean at home but on the road the darker jerseys covered how dirty (or bloody) they were.
