This is the fictional Story of former NHL-Player Ray Sheppard, who becomes the General Manager of the Florida Panthers.

April 2007
After a devastating ´06-07 NHL-Season for the Florida Panthers(with a Record of 28-45-9/65 Points finishing 29th Overall; the second most Goals-against and the second worst Powerplay & Penalty-Killing), the Team Owner Alan Cohen decided to fire General Manager Jacques Martin on April 9th 2007.
One Week later, on April 15th, President Jordan Zimmerman announced that former Panthers Right-Wing Ray Sheppard will take over the GM-Duties immediately. It´s Sheppard´s first Job in Hockey since he retired, 6 Years ago, in 2001.
Zimmerman said about Sheppard:"Eventhough he hasn´t been in Hockey for some Years, I know his Expierence and will to win Games will help us to build a great Team. I like his Vision, how he wants our Club plays Hockey in the Future"
Sheppard said about his new Job:"I´m happy that I got this Job and have the faith of the Owners. I will surely do some Mistakes. but have Duane Sutter as my Assistant on my Side and he will help me as much possible"

Sheppard´s first Job will be taking care of the Roster and judging all Talents & Prospect. He said:"I will take a Bulldozer and throw everybody into the Ocean. Those who swim back, will be in the Team for the next Season"
The Florida Panthers signed following Players to NHL-Entry Contracts: Tyler Plante(G/Brandon-WHL), Mario Bliznak(C-Vancouver-WHL), Dan Collins(RW/Plymouth-OHL) & Kenndal McArdle(LW/Moose Jaw-WHL)
GM Sheppard about his Acquisitions:"Tyler had a great Season in the WHL, we think he will be a great Goalie for our System. Collins is a great natural Scorer, but needs to improve physically. McArdle is a very gritty Player and will be ready for the NHL soon"

A few Days before the End of April, the Panthers re-signed G Craig Anderson(700.000$/1 Yr.), RD Steve Montador(555.000$/1 Yr.) & LD Bryan Allen(3,5Mio$/2 Yes.). Comment from Sheppard:"I´m very happy to re-sign Craig Anderson. He had a amazing Season in the AHL, eventhough San Antonio missed the Playoffs. He will get his Chance next Season in the NHL for sure!!"

MAY 2007
On May 1st 2007 veteran LW Gary Roberts signed a 1 Yr.Contract-Extension worth 1.89Mio$.
Sheppard commented on Roberts:"I know Gary as a Player on the Opposite and he was always tough to play against. Maybe he isn´t the sharpest Tool in the Box anymore, but he will be a great Leader for our Youngsters on and off the Ice"
Roberts on his new Contract:"I accepted a small Paycut. I´m already 41 and can´t expect big Offers anymore, so I´m happy with the Panthers Offer"
GM Sheppard also signed RD Cory Murphy from HIFK Helsinki/FIN for 1.516$Mio till June 2008. The Contract starts on June 7th 2007.
Sheppard:"A offensive D-man, who is extremely dangerous on PP. But he needs to work his Way up the Ranks"

Meanwhile, new GM Ray Sheppard needed to find a replacement for the vacanted Head Coach-Job for the next Season. Originally Sheppard wanted to make Coach George Kingston the new HC,"but he wants to retire after that Season and we´re sad but respect his Desicion" Sheppard also said:"There are some interesting Coaches on the Market and I will talk to all of them. We haven´t decided anything yet"

On April 18th 2007, the Panthers also signed RD Peter Aston from Ässät Pori/FIN to a NHL Entry-Contract

JUNE 2007
Only few Weeks till the NHL Entry Draft takes place in Columbus, Ohio on June 23rd 2007. All Florida Panthers Scouts are busy scouting Players from every important Hockeyleague in the World. Chef-Scout Scott Luce said:"We mostly looking for North American and Scandinavian Players with a good Bodysize & Strength and great work ethic. But also for speedy Wingers from eastern Europe, who can be fed with good Passes"

The Panthers announced that LW/C Stefan Meyer signed a 1 Yr. Contract-Extension for 650.000$. GM Sheppard liked his development in the 2007 Season and hopes he continues in 2007-08 with it.

Free Agent LW Jan Hlavac signed a 2 Yr. Contract(1.265Mio$) with the Florida Panthers on June 11th 2007. He spent the Year with Sparta Prague/CZE(38 Goals for 67 Pts. in 52 Games). GM Sheppard said:"Hlavac will be a helping Hand to score Goals in the coming Season. He´s a expiriended Player who knows how to win Championships"

The NHL Entry Draft-Lottery was held on June 16th 2007 and the L.A. Kings won it & getting from 6th to 2nd Place. Therefor the Panthers moved from 2nd to 3rd Place & the Chicago Blackhawks stayed at 1st.

On June 22nd 2007 the Panthers made the first Trade under GM Sheppard´s Regime. They traded their 1st Round 2007 & 7th Round Draft Pick 2008 to the Toronto Maple Leafs for their 1st Round & 2nd Round Draft Pick 2008
GM Sheppard annouced also 2 Hours before the NHL Entry Draft that the Panthers traded Toronto´s 1st Round Draft Pick 2007, the Rights to RW Brady Calla & LD Derrick LaPoint to Edmonton Oilers for their 1st Round 2007, 1st Round 2008 & 7th Round Darft Pick 2008 & Rights to RW Colin McDonald

Projected as Top-Pair defensive D-man, who is a great Checker and has good Skatingability. Needs to improve his Stickhandling.
Round 2 Pick #32 C/RW James O´Brien from Uni. of Minnesota Golden Gophers
O´Brien is projected as future No.1 Center. He´s a great Two-Way Player with amazing Bully Skills and is not afraid to do dirty Work in the Corners.
Round 3 Pick #62 RD Yakov Seleznev from Russia´s AK Bars Kazan
He´s a big, offensive D-man, who loves to check his Opponents but has some weakness in his defensive Play.

Could be the Steal of the Draft. Ranked as #77, is a offensive D-man with good Skating but must improve his defensive Ability in the next Years to become a NHL-Caliber Player
Round 5 Pick #126 C/RW Vitaly Karamnov(Free Agent)
Big Center with amazing Skating and good offensive Skills. Good Shot and Passer but didn´t cares about his defensive Responsibility too much.

Great Goalscorer who also take care of his defensive Play. Can be a Star in the AHL and decent NHL Player.

Pure Goalscorer that needs to develop his mental Strength, one Day he decides Games on his own and other Days he can´t be seen. Also a lightning fast Player

GM Sheppard Reg.Season-Conclusion:
"We had a great Season so far, Coach Torchetti got the best out of the Team. The Team had been projected as 26th in League and we ended at 2nd best Team overall, which had been like a Miracle. Also being a Top-Ten Team in scoring Goals and fewest Goals shows clearly how well our Team worked together. Only our Powerplay could have been better with 12%, we are in the Middle-Bottom on PP%."

The Florida Panthers will face the 7th seated Montreal Canadiens in the 1st Round of the Stanley Cup-Playoffs
