It is possible, I traded David Legwand with the Senators to Boston, he has an NTC.
Try putting the player on the block prior to trading him, also trying to ship him to a favorite team, or a contender might help.

You could also tell him that you don't need him. That usually makes them lift their NTC.

Discipline to piddle him off (no reason). Have to be careful though as teammates might get angry

Is it possible to give them a new contract and exclude the no trade clause?

Yes, it´s possible.
I did it once to a NTC player, he accepted it, two weeks later I traded him him away

Thornton is no problem to ship away. I have done that i two saves now.
Just offer him out to all teams and pick your best offer.
When it´s time to confirm the trade you just put him on transferlist and tell him he´s not needed anymore. Then he will let you trade him.
