i think it is average rating correct?

if i am looking to call sometime up it is best to bring the guy with the highest average rating up that fits the need. in turn if that player is able to have a higher average rating (a good amount higher) then another player it might be best to let the called up player stay and continue to play because they are nhl ready and proven to be better then others on my team.

is that all right or is there better way to tell if someone is nhl ready.

Not sure what is the best way, but I tend to look at average rating and, of course, the attributes. Sometimes you may have a player, who is clearly not good enough for call up, but nonetheless topping your farm team's avRating category. I might also look at the scout report. If the player has potential, then you may give him a chance despite his poor attributes (at the moment). And look at the ratings for the last five games. Maybe he had a good beginning to the season, but hasn't played so well lately.

For me it's also important that they have an actual spot on the roster, rather than just call them up even if they're playing lights out in the AHL. If he gets called up and then slots in on the fourth line, nothing is gained and the only thing that happens is that the player loses a big chunk of playing time.

Unless he can jump in on the third line or higher, I'll let them continue playing the AHL.

Have to agree with this. Sometimes I call up players who are less ready to fill the roster so others can keep playing a lot. I Also think about waivers - If I call someone up, can I send them back down? I don't want a top prospect sitting around doing nothing because of injury returns or overcrowding.
Also depends if they have finished development - they might not need to play every week anymore so could be called up and used less (and make space in the AHL for someone needing to play).

No strict rules though. Some guys have high potential, high skill, and play bad every game.
