Starting a game in AHL - any tips?

I'm going to start a game in the AHL for a different challenge and try and get a job in the NHL at a later in my career.
I've never played in the AHL and don't know much about it - any tips or anything I need to know?

If You wanna get a real challenge start in lowest league for example UK leagues and try to grow up with levels. After years you should start NHL. It takes sometime but gives more fun when you playing Hardcore mode.
You should only create rosters based on scout reports. Try it.

Theres a lot of line management involved as your parent team will drop and call up players all the time!

Yup, it almost feels like you're just the head coach, who has to use the players the GM will send your way, only able to sign a few players yourself.

Didn't win any Calder Cups, but had a very succesful time in the AHL with Portland, getting a NHL job in a couple of years.
As noted by previous posters, you are forced to make quite a few line up changes with the parent club using the players frequently. With that in mind, I tried to recruit a couple of players for each position to have a back up plan incase the dreaded call ups come. Scouted different leagues heavily and managed to bring in plenty of decent players. Also, the schedules are quite messed up with games on three straight days (I'm not kidding), so the depth comes in handy as players are bound to get tired.
Also had a very attacking gameplan, which could've been one of the reasons for my success. Though, it worked much better when the Panthers sent me Luongo.
