Placing player on injured reserve

I cant find anything in the manual about placing a player on injured reserve.When woud you want to do this and why?

You will want to place a player on IR when he is out of action for at least one week with an injury. Putting them on IR means that they don't count towards your roster limit so that you can bring someone else in to cover for them.
A player must be on IR for at least one week so that's why it's best only to put them on IR when they are going to be out injured for at least one week. Whilst a player is on IR he can't play any games.

As Archi said, you place a player on IR to liberate a spot. For example, if you have a player injured for 10 days, you may want to replace him with a player that is in one of your affiliate teams (AHL,ECHL,etc).
To place your injured player on the injured reserve, go to the player profile, and you'll see a "place on injured reserve" option in the bottom left options.
The player will have to stay on this list (and then can't be dressed for a game) for a certain amount of time. Archi talked of 7 days, but this is mainly for NHL. Other leagues may have different durations. For example, Central Hockey League has two injured reserve lists, a 14 days one and a 40 days one, if i remember well. This amount of time is indicated when you're asked to confirm for putting a player on IR.

Ok so this is the only thread I could find about injured reserve.
I thought that when a player is on IR their salary was not counted to wards the cap. I am currently right up against the cap in my game and when I put someone on IR the salary hit didn't go down so I couldn't bring anyone up to cover the spot. While he was still on IR another player was injured, at that point the second player's salary was removed from the cap hit, but not the first. Any ideas why?

It depends on how many games the player will miss while on IR.

I don't know the specifics, but if a player's out for a long time (at least month) then his salary won't count against the cap, if he's only out for a couple of weeks, he'll still count against your cap. That's why it's a good idea to have a 13th forward on your roster and have some defencemen in the minors who are making the minimum who don't need to clear waivers.
