I believe that is correct. After the first season, starting on July 1st 1999, you can hire/fire all you want (rule wording below)

No restrictions on staff hiring and firing other than you have to wait until July 1st of that first season to do any of it. After that, it's open season!

Regarding trading and when one can start trading, the rules say...

No trading in season 1!
Trading opens once the 1998/1999 Stanley Cup Finals are over. After that, you're allowed to trade at any point the NHL allows you to.


These two statements/rules seem to contradict each other to me...
AFAIK "seasons" go from July 1st to June 30th of the following year...

• Based on "no trading in season 1" there'd be no trading until July 1st, 1999
• Based on "Trading opens once the 1998/1999 Stanley Cup Finals are over" trading would occur in season 1, in mid June prior to the 1999 NHL Draft

So...given the above - is trading allowed after the SCF (so sometime in June 1999) or does one have to wait until July 1st 1999 to start trading?

This is the first challenge I've played with an age cap on trading. Does the 25 year old limit also apply to UFA signings?

That's correct - it applies to UFAs too.

Hah! I just realised basically the entire roster is out of contract after the 1st season! I guess year 2 is a good time to start fresh and molding the team into your own.

I can't remember ever seeing so many players list their current team as a Disliked Club.

There's a reason.

Got swept by the Red WIngs in the Stanley Cup final. Injuries during our playoff run took its toll in the end I guess.

Can we won some trophy this way ?

I got through two rounds, only to be reverse-swept by the Devils.

Joining, the last retro challange with bolts was a blast and i did 8 sesons with em.
I never player with Islanders either during my 10 years of EHM
Just won premier leauge with Blyth Spartans in 2027 with FM2017 so this came perfect (all rainy summer days will be as islanders GM)

Yes. You should post screens of player stats, standings, playoff tree (if you made it), trades, UFA signings (if you have any) and finances after each season. You can check out the "Post your screenshots here" in this challenge section to see how others have done in the past.

I'm doing terribly after 20 games with a record of 7-11-2. Salo was injured for nearly a month as was Linden

In case you don't know you also need to upload some stats after 20 games, 40 games, 60 games, and 82 games. Go to TBL Challenge on the top bar and you'll see Upload Your Stats in the dropdown menu.

I just had to spend an hour googling to remind myself that Ziggy Palffy was, in fact, this awesome. One of those guys that would've torn things apart in the modern NHL.

60 games in and I just lost Czerkawski for 4 months and Palffy for 3 weeks.


I hope season two is better injury wise, I had lost Reichel for two months previously, Lapointe missed 14 games so far, and had Linden injured for a couple weeks.

The only big one defensively was Richter missing a few months, but Berard and Namestikov and Pilon have all missed a handful of games ( be it Pilon is a scratch most the time ).


But all things considered the season has gone all right from what I expected. Except in goal, Salo and Flaherty have both been streaky for me. Has anyone managed to pick up a decent goalie in the first off season? Salo wants out badly for me.

With that cap of $34 million in place, I already can't resign Flaherty or Linden.

Stanley Cup champions in year 2!

I have like no farm what so ever, drafting will be so important. Currently have like a handfull of guys in the AHL, only one forward I can bring up. Thankfully, only at one point did I ever have 2 forwards out at the same time. Needless to say, my AHL team is doing extra terrible this year. Drafted Antipov in the 3rd round and he was a big reason (along with Palffy and Linden) that we did so well. 93 points (35+58) in his debut season, great stuff. Goal-scoring wingers are some kind of deadly in this game! Luongo came on pretty well as the season progressed and took over for Valiquette as the backup and eventually, more or less, the starter. Still went with Flaherty during the playoffs mostly.

Dawe - Smolinski - Sacco
Belanger - Laperrier - Miller
+ Pahlsson (147th)

Jonsson - Berard
Chara - Campbell
Brewer - Richter

Flaherty/Luongo/Valiquette

Sent Lapointe to Buffalo for Campbell in the off-season. Stuck with he team and had a solid year, no idea why Buffalo would be willing to give him up honestly. Laperrier was my one and only UFA signing. Will try to grab a couple of cheap ones this off-season to flesh out the team a bit.

I had a PM from one guy asking me when the database came out. Like "Why does Palffy have so high attributes from NYI? I have never heard of him!"
Ziggy has more points per game than Selanne, Sundin, Fleury, Turgeon, Francis, Patrick Kane etc.
