What are the rules behind rookie status?

Does anyone know what exactly the rules are for a player counting as a rookie? As best as I can tell EHM is not following the NHL's rules, no more than 25 games in a season, no more than 6 games in two preceding seasons, playoff games don't count.
This is a bit frustrating as I have been keeping a Calder streak going, and my top "rookie" this year is no longer considered a rookie for reasons that I can't figure out. Does anyone know exactly what rules the game is using?
Conversely, does anyone know if it's possible to edit a save game so that a player is considered a rookie?
