No Playoffs in first season

I'm sorry if this has been brought up somewhere before or if I am posting in the wrong spot. Anyhow....so I've come to the end of the season, or so i thought. instead of going to the NHL playoffs my game started the World Championships...???? No playoffs at all and i am in MAY!! I look at each teams remaining games and there are 8 teams that still have one game to play so the season never actually finished??? Has anyone else experienced this?
