Overtime/Shootout oddity.

I've had 14 overtime games this year, and only 1 of them has gone to a shootout. Has anyone else had a similar experience? The last 13 OT games have all been decided in the first 5 minutes.

I'm wondering if this is something with the patch, because this is truly bizarre.

I'm in '11/'12 with the new patch.

It is odd, but it could still be just a fluke.

How are your tactics, by the way? You a freewheeling run & gun team? If so, that helps in avoiding shutouts (since it increases the frequency of goals, and an overtime is over the second a goal is scored).

Yeah, we lean towards the offensive side of things. But it's not like the games were 7-7 going in. Usually normal scores like 2-2 or 3-3.

OK... how about your 4-on-4 player selections and tactics, are they heavily offensive?

Pretty much neutral. Only change is a slightly high tempo for both lines.

Looks like a fluke. Had several games in the playoffs go past the first OT (longest being 4 OTs). Had one of my preseason games the next year go to the shootout.

Yeah, I'm guessing it was just one of those "small statistical samples" kind of things.

I started out a new dynasty and am in my first season. So far my record is 13-8-10. I have lost 10 games in shootout already! I have never seen anything like this before. I have Niitimaki so he's not a bad goalie at all. What do you guys think?

I lose almost every time I go to a shootout. So for me, it's not so uncommon. Sorry I can't be more help.

I think it's funny that 99% of the time I see people talking about Niittymäki, they somehow misspell it. Must be the double I's and double T's that are making it so hard. :-D

I've never really gotten too deep in with the tactical side of shootouts, so really can't say much to this either... :dunno:

I pick my shooters based on deking ability and leave it alone. seems to work....hmm...I should go check how that's working...

I suspect it's more important which goalie you have. I had one in my ECHL team, that brought us five consecutive wins (might also be four in five, but still..) - after he was called up, I won maybe one game in five shutouts.

Goalies have of course a very important part in a shootout win or loss. With Niittymäki (i learned to write it correctly long ago, Mr. Tasku! :p) you shouldn't have any goaltending problem.

Then it's all about the shooters. Deking, stickhandling, shooting, and somehow flair have an impact. Their ability to endure the pressure and deliver when needed too. I personnaly never set an established list of shooters and choose a different set at every single shootout, depending on players abilities, their condition (if too tired, it may not be a good idea to make them shoot), their game performance (someone who is having a really bad night won't shoot), and how they are doing generally in the shootouts. For example, if i have a superb goalscorer that never scores in the shootout, he'll be out of my shooters list. You can also which of your players are good/excellent on breakaways by asking a coach report on your players.

So there are many factors to take into account, and you also need a bit of luck. Plus, you can never control the quality of the opposing goalie...

Btw, i usually suck in the shootouts :p

That was exactly the objective :D I globally know what to do, but usually can't do it right

And well, in the first two seasons of the challenge, i hadn't have stellar goalies like Niittymäki, and my best goalscorer during this period (Havlat) never wanted to score on the shootout, and usually ended without even taking the shot  Won about 40-50% of my shootouts though.

I always spell Nittymaki right, save for that stupid dot thing going on over the a. What the heck do you need it for? Umglots or whatever...the a sounds like an a without the umglots,so what the heck? Do you think people would pronounce his name Nit-why-makey without the umglot thingies?

Wait..."Nit-why-makey" sounds good...from now on this is how I spell and say the dufus's name. :-D

LOL!

Calm down man, I'll let my countrymen know you disagree with our umglots, and we'll remove them from the alphabet, m'kay? Happy now?

What the heck is an umglot anyway? :-?

I dunno...tis the German word I believe for those silly little dots..since they have em too.

From now on I will spell it: Knit-eeee-ma..ckey. How do you make those dumb dots anyway? Special Finnish keyboard? With pictures of Swedish girls?

Wait..they are umlauts. And I know how to do them I think

Nittymäki Nittymäki ....ick looks silly. And takes too long.

You miss a "i" batdad :D It's Niittymäki :D That's the main reason why i didn't want him in the challenge. It would have been horrible to blog then :D Price is so easier to write :D

Pff! Umlaut? That's silly, just call them "dots".

Yes, we have a special keyboard for it, doesn't take any longer than any other key...

Now... back on topic before Calv banns us...

:-D

Edit: haha! I told you they never get it right! :joy:

You don't have to have a special keyboard for the Ä's and Ö's. Just press A at the same time as the key to the left of the big Enter. ääää -- see how easy that was? :-p

batdad, try holding Alt Gr and press key ' (or the one you have two dots written on as a third function) then release Alt Gr (nothing happens) and press a or o or u to get the dots on it. Like öäü :)

It appears Batdad may have the same US English keyboard as myself, which does not have the Alt Gr key. Instead, there are two regular Alt keys, so the Alt-number combination is the only way to type accented characters.

However, the right Alt can be made to act as Alt Gr if you go into the Regional and Language options of the control panel and add the United States-International layout. With that enabled, Alt-Q makes ä.

I feel that when you go into OT or even a shootout in EHM 2007. It really depends on the goaltending ability that you have on your team, but then again, you can't win at all if you don't score.

I usually try to get a goaltender who loves to shine and be in the spotlight of things. The reason I say that, because Niittymaki being that kind of rank, he always does great when it is just all on his shoulders. Such as I have found many times before in this game with many different goaltenders.

Plus, when it comes to players that I choose to take the shots. I usually go with someone who can deke well or possibly have a great wristshot. Sometimes that will do it for you, but sometimes it won't at all.

All in all, I mostly depend on my goaltending. I know that all 4 of my players or 5 in some cases will not score at all. That is why I look to my goaltender to stop all shooters on the other side of the rink.
