Can you delay a player's retirement?

Hi all. I have a player on my team who is 38 years old, and retires after the 1st year of every new game. I would like to keep him for another year as I cannot find a replacement within my budget and he is one of my better players. Is there any way I could make him stay for an extra year? I have tried offering him a new, longer, improved contract, but he accepts it and then retires about a week later! I've also tried to set him a retirement date at the end of the 07-08 season, but for some reason he is shown up on a new game as set to retire at the end of the 1st year. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
