Finland - Ukraine 5-0. Absolutely not a test for Team Finland, although the lack of a quality playmaker showed already.

Edit: Man, the Canadian team is big. Finland has three skaters who are 6'2" and only one taller than that (Berg), whereas more than half the Canadian team is 6'2" or taller.

Shane Doan captain??
After all the fuss about his controversial sayings about french canadian.. Yeah right
The western country club strikes again!!!

by batdad
Western country club? Heh...funny..cause the west usually gets the bum's rush from the east. But yeah..that is a completely different topic. As for Doan as captain..no comment. But look at the team, and tell me who really has the experience on that team to be the guy over him? Brewer? Mayers? Commodore?

On paper, this may be the weakest Team Canada in ages.

Hail Paul DiPietro!! :D

Didn't Paul Di Pietro retire from Team Switzerland? Or am I thinking of some other oldie.

He may have. I don't think the Suisse roster is right. It lists Martin Gerber as a member. I am sure he is still backing up Emery in Ottawa though. :-D

Yeah, I noticed Gerber on there as well. Perhaps they are counting their chickens too early. 8-)

Yeps, something must be wrong there, they also have four goalies listed, but I guess its in case the Sens gets eliminated (I hope not, as Iam jumping on their bandwagon :-D )

Yes, there are some canadien-swiss in the team....guess its a way to strenghten up the roster, but this year I think there is only DiPietro (who is still playing for the Swiss, had another excellent season in Zug with 22 goals and 25 ast. in 45 games). Other cases are way more flagrant like Italy or I think France (Shadd can teach me right though).
Another case is Goran Bezina who is (just like I was) son of inmigrants.

....like I said before:

HOPP SCHWIIZ!!!! :joy:

flea: for team France, i can't tell you. It's easier for me to follow the NHL, with an ocean of distance, than following my national team or the national championship  (thanks to the no media coverage)

I know we had some canadians in the past, but i don't know how it is actually. I guess it's the same way, but that's only a guess :dunno:

Political figures in Canada are starting to make a stink over Doan's captaincy because of the alleged comments he made regarding French Canadians. Jack Layton and Stephane Dion and whoever is the leader of the Bloc Quebecois are up in arms that Doan shouldn't be representing our country to the world. Sigh.

What about Team USA? Given how the last elections went, they definitely should have a Democrat starting in goal now.

The politicians need to shut up. Even the linseman in question has said he was mistaken. Shane Doan is one of the few NHL'ers who does not even freaking swear! No trash talk, no nothing. Dude is one of the nicest people I have ever met.

On the platter this afternoon: Switzerland - Finland. The Swiss get screwed over by scheduling -- they have something like 18 hours to recover between matches, whereas Team Finland had one full day off in between.

Before the tournament i thought finland had things very well in the net. Now i'm not so sure anymore. Our defence looked completely helpless against russia and Norrena played a bad game. For some reason i don't have enough confidence in Lehtonen either, that's why i seriously hope Norre will bounce back. I hope lehtonen proves me wrong though.

4-5 isn't that bad against Russia, considering their team is devastatingly good on paper, and they had the support of the home crowd on their backs as well. I didn't see the game because I was working, but I heard Finland had a bad start and then came back in the end.

Seems like that's how it always goes for Finland when we loose a game against one of the other big countries: we're either asleep in the beginning, and wake up to the end of the game and "almost" get it, or the other way around, we score tons of goals in the beginning and then start mocking around on the ice and loose the game right after we lost concentration thinking it's done, we've got it already.

Anyways I have faith in our team, Norrena has proven he's world class goalie and Lehtonen is a decent back up. There's not much a goalie can do if the defenders can't keep up with the Russian Rockets...

Norrena would certainly want that 1st Russian goal back. He also looked a bit disoriented early in that game.

Lehtonen wasn't exactly stellar vs. Denmark, but after one period against the Swiss he looks solid.

Like I said, didn't see the game, and after I heard it was a defeat, I didn't care to check the sports news either...

I'm just making uneducated guesses based on eye wittness accounts... :nerd: :-D
