Potential Questions

One aspect of this game that really confuses me is potential. Let's say a player is 80 potential in the editor. Does that mean he'll suck, or is there still some degree of chance involved? Could someone just explain how the potential number works to me?

80 PA = a fourth-liner in the top Euro leagues. So yeah, he'll suck.

You try a forum search on "player potential". In a quick search, I was able to come across this. You might find more if you look through the search results.

I looked for forum search, but couldn't find it. I saw that chart, and it is making a bit more sense now, but is it saying that very young players will fluctuate between those values?

Well, Luke Curtin is 90 potential and he was a star for my NHL team for 1 year (70 points). I got him again when he was at about 65 skill and he still was on the third line (that year I won the cup, too)

I'm guessing he probably had a variable of -13. That means he could end up anywhere between 60 and 130. The variable is made so that younger players who aren't sure things can end up different ways. I'm not familiar with Luke Curtin but I'd guess his 70 point season had something to do with his linemates and icetime, plus maybe the tactics were just right for him to perform well in his role. Just a guess though.

I really don't know all that much about editing the database or messing with potential. I enjoy the game more with an element of surprise to it. If you don't get anymore responses here, you might want to do a search over at the SI forums. I seem to recall there being more info there on the subject.

Or with Luke it was the pre adjustment/patch version of the game...when he and Sean Collins and Sean Bergenheim turned into perennial 100 pt guys in many people's games.
