Rivals

didn't find a topic on it, so wanted to ask do rivalries affect anything, or even in the game?

I *think* winning or loosing against your main rivals will please / displease your board and your fans more easily than any other game.

kay kay, thanks. is there anywhere to say find a list of teams major rivals?

not a big hockey follower, so don't know like half the rivalries.

You can see rivalries in pre-game editor for sure... don't think there's a list anywhere... :-k

Well, lets get started with that list!...

- Flyers vs Devils (due to such close location, and the annual battles for first place in the Atlantic Division)
- Flyers vs Rangers (New York teams and Philly teams just don't get along, I guess)
- Flyers vs Pittsburgh (often referred to as "Battle of Pennsylvania").

And I believe these are the three rivals set for the Flyers in the database, too.

I believe the Penguins only have Philly and the Islanders.

I doubt they change when you play the game, but they may, does anybody know?

It would be great if they did based on how things go in our franchises. I know that there are certain teams that cause my players to be an extra edgy.

Every time I play Florida something happens. This is why I now dress Boogaard, Belak, Avery and Cairns for games against them. I love matching my Boogey-Avery-Belak line against their top players.

I believe rivals can be seen in the team info page. Not 100% on that without my game up but I think so.

Leafs--hated by all 5 Canadian teams, and most of the other 24.

Canucks-Flames, Oilers, Av's. Also Rangers. The Wild think we are rivals and I guess it is getting closer to that point with playoffs etc...but not really on Vancouver's part yet.

Hawks-Deadthings, Loafs in particular. there are others but those are the two most hated teams

A small fixing to the previous post:
According to my game, Atlanta has TB as a rival club, while Caps has both Canes and Pens. :-D

Icos, thanks for making the rival list. By the way, CrockerNHL, thanks for adding missing information.

Interesting, how did it happen, Crocker? Have you edited anything? Because both in Unfaking and original database, Capitals and Thrashers don't have any rivals set in my game.

I have no idea, buddy. As far as I know, you cannot edit rivals. I'm in 2013/2014 season playing Rangers.

BTW, I use an original database ( upgraded to 3.0.4 version, of course) and still with the same game I started on April 2007. I hope it helps.

Actually, you can edit rivals(up to three for each team).

Did you check rivalries with your game in progress (with save game editor)? Is it possible that rivalries develope during the game?

I've noticed that while running many minor league seasons, that games against rivals are almost always have a sell-out crowd. If you are having attendence problems, rivalry games give you boost, which also helps the finances. I've edited my databases to give my teams the max of three rivals. With about 10-12 division games against rivals you can boost the attendance and the gate receipts. In turn if you win big games against rivals, it does keep the board and the fans and the players happy.

That's exactly what I did. I'm not sure about developing rivalries during the game, but seems to me like the chances of it are good.

It sounds to me like rivalries can develop during play. :joy: :joy: :joy:

Because I just checked my default database, and both Washington and Atlanta are rivaless(in agreeance with Icos' observation).

To further confirm... off the top of your head, can you remember seeing any particular things, or series of things, that could have developed these new rivalries in your game? Any close or constant playoff match-ups or anything between these teams?

I'll try to dig up something to make things clear.
I noticed few close (4:3) playoff match-ups in Conference Finals between Flames and Canucks, probably two years in a row. And Leafs were very tough to play against, getting a very close games and a lot of injuries. Tampa started very good. For an obvious reason, I was mostly concentrated on transforming Rangers into a power house. Honestly, it's pretty hard to remember any specific details in those 7 years, but if something comes up later I'll gladly inform you. Generally, Rangers, Panthers, Sabres, Caps and Canadiens were very strong in the East, while Blue Jackets, Flames, Canucks and Stars dominated the West. Speaking of Thrashers, the latest made their presence known only last year, when they grab a bunch of free agents (Luongo, Redden, Heatley, Boyes, Clark, Drury, Doan, Svatos etc.), building a good team around Little and few prospects. I guess there is nothing to address their rivalry with TBL... Now I'm intrigued...I'll check all rivalries in 2014 and we'll see how things go on.

As I've promised here's the default db (with Icos' observationin) in comparision with my current game (January 18th 2014). My data is separated by "||" and letters are bolded when there's a change of rivalry. Here we go:

Anaheim Ducks - 1. Los Angeles Kings
Atlanta Trashers - no rivals || 1. Tampa Bay
Boston Bruins - 1. Montreal Canadiens, 2. New York Rangers || 1.Montreal, 2.Toronto, 3.Buffalo
Buffalo Sabres - 1. Toronto Maple Leafs || 1. Toronto, 2.Montreal, 3.Ottawa
Calgary Flames - 1. Edmonton Oilers || 1.Edmonton, 2.Vancouver
Carolina Hurricanes - no rivals || 1. Washington
Chicago Blackhawks - 1. Detroit Red Wings, 2. St. Louis Blues || 1.Detroit, 2.St. Louis, 3.Toronto
Colorado Avalanche - 1. Detroit Red Wings, 2. Vancouver Canucks
Columbus Blue Jackets - 1. Nashville Predators || 1.Nashville, 2.Detroit, 3.Chicago
Dallas Stars - 1. Edmonton Oilers, 2. Colorado Avalanche
Detroit Red Wings - 1. Colorado Avalanche || 1. St.Louis, 2. Colorado, 3. Chicago
Edmonton Oilers - 1. Calgary Flames, 2. Dallas Stars
Florida Panthers - 1. Tampa Bay Lightning
Los Angeles Kings - 1. Anaheim Ducks
Minnesotta Wild - no rivals
Montreal Canadiens - 1. Toronto Maple Leafs, 2. Ottawa Senators, 3. Boston Bruins
Nashville Predators - 1. Columbus Blue Jackets || 1. Detroit, 2. Columbus
New Jersey Devils - 1. New York Rangers, 2. New York Islanders, 3. Philadelphia Flyers
New York Islanders - 1. New York Rangers, 2. New Jersey Devils
New York Rangers - 1. New York Islanders, 2. Philadelphia Flyers, 3. New Jersey Devils
Ottawa Senators - 1. Toronto Maple Leafs, 2. Montreal Canadiens || 1.Toronto, 2.Montreal, 3.Buffalo
Philadelphia Flyers - 1. New York Rangers, 2. New Jersey Devils, 3. Pittsburgh Penguins || 1. New York Rangers, 2. Toronto, 3. New Jersey
Phoenix Coyotes - no rivals
Pittsburgh Penguins - 1. Philadelphia Flyers
San Jose Sharks - no rivals
St. Louis Blues - 1. Detroit Red Wings, 2. Chicago Blackhawks
Tampa Bay Lightning - 1. Florida Panthers
Toronto Maple Leafs - 1. Ottawa Senators, 2. Montreal Canadiens, 3. Buffalo Sabres
Vancouver Canucks - 1. Colorado Avalanche, 2. Toronto Maple Leafs || 1. Colorado, 2. Toronto, 3. Calgary
Washington Capitals - no rivals || 1. Carolina, 2.Pittsburgh

Is that enough to conclude that rivalries can develop during play? :-D

Thanks for that Crocker. That's some great stuff!

I've always loved sports rivalries, but mostly ignored them in EHM because I thought they were static. I'm one happy camper knowing I can begin looking out for evolving rivalries now. :thup:

It's funny how much the developers have left little bits of gold and jewels of the game mechanic untold to us, so that we can discover them on our own. Just goes to show the hard work and thought they put into this game. :-)

You are completely right, Tasku.

I only wish that they could get the funding in order to do further versions. I know that is hard on account of what has already happened and what was said in the past, but who knows, maybe it'll happen soon.

There are plenty of things that you miss if you don't watch the game closely. I know that sometimes there are things that I have probably skipped over or just didn't notice for the first 5 seasons and then I finally see it in the 6th or 7th year.
