Anyone use the trap?

Just wandering if anyone uses the neutral zone trap as their main tactic? Or any other defensive tactics? If so how do you get on?

I use a trapping tactic on my 3rd "Shut-down" line only. I tried using a team trap in the ECHL challenge the first few games, but it didn't work with the players/Coaches that I had. So I figured that if I was going to lose, lose trying to score goals. I think it had more to do with the coaches I was using. None of them were "defensive" coaches.

I use the trap if i have:
a/ guys who're not that great defensively, as it's pretty easy to put in place and get results after 10-20 games
b/ a defensively-based team, which i hadn't tried yet with EHM07, but get many successes in EHM05.

But right now i'm using a positionnal high forecheck along with a 2-1-2 neutral zone defensive positionning, combined with high pressure and hitting. Gimme that puck and let me score! :D

Im trying that at the moment aswell, having mixed results so far, but I'll stick with it and see how I go.

Same here: that tactics for one of my units and I also use trap for my 3rd line, except really weak teams. I have 8 Cups behind my belt.

Trap is a big tactic that they have in the load tactics section.

heh...something else I never knew. I just always used a 1-4 forecheck and a 1-1-3 neutral zone def (the pre-set uses 1-2-2). and called it the trap.

If i'm right, 1-1-3 is the left wing lock, not the trap :-k

That may be. If you look at the positioning in the unit tactics, 1-1-3 is the same as 1-2-2, but the players are spaced wider to cover both wings. :dunno: All I know is that it works. My 3rd line was Dingman-Sutherby-Ortmeyer. Ortmeyer left via free agency so I replaced him with Nicklas Hagman via trade. Turned out to be a great move. He has comparable defensive attribs to Orts but is faster and has a much better shot and offensive instincts. Hags even had a Hat Trick in a recent game. He is also doing wonders for Sutherby's morale as his AvR has been up due the assists on Hag's goals so he feels better about himself.

I've been using the line of Hagman-Sutherby-Ortmeyer (with Vaananen-M.Staal on defense) to play the trap and PK duties for more than 6 years. They have such a great chemistry! I hope, I'll be able to enjoy their style for another year or two in my game (they are 35, 33 and 36 years old respectively).

True, and somewhat confusing. But i had the possibility to see some tactical schemes on the net, where the positionning of the players was a bit clearer clearer. And if those schemes are right and if i read it correctly (that's too many "if" :D), 1-1-3 is LW lock and 1-2-2 is the trap.

Here are the links:
Neutral Zone Trap

Left Wing Lock

Yep he is. The basic fundamentals of both are the same (stopping opposing rushes) but the trap is more pressuring the puck carrier to make a move, and even if he gets through theres someone else to shut him down, while the left wing lock basically one forward pressures the opponents and the other two backcheck.

Wouldn't the Left Wing Lock be a 2-1-2? With your C and RW(Both forchecking) trying to funnel guys at your LW(positioned in neutral zone) with the Dmen backing them up from the blue line??

Well, it helps to have defensive players, and defensive coaches. After that it's a matter of letting the guys settle in. Are any of your coaches defensive? And how long did you try the trap?
