New here to EHM and to the Blue Line

Just purchased EHM and I am still testing the waters on how I want to proceed

Curious as to what the community says, do you play out your games or sim them?

and if I start in a "minor league" can I work my up to the NHL as a GM?

Whether you play or just sim through games really depends on you. Some people like to coach the games on high speed and just make adjustments between periods. Some people like to watch the whole game unfold in real time and really analyze the game and the way their players perform under their tactics. Some people really just want to get through seasons quickly and they just let the games sim without going into them. It's all about how you want to play.

To answer your other question... yes. You can work your way up to the NHL from a minor league team, or even a junior hockey team. There's lots of people that start the game unemployed and go where ever their career takes them.

And then TBL roster update 1.5. Where most of the playable leagues are updated. Found here:

Install the patch first, and then extract the roster update into the game's folder. You put them in C:/Program(or Program files depending where NHL Eastside Hockey Manager is installed)/Sports Interactive/NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2007

But yes. The patch is a must, and updated rosters is never a bad thing.

I knew I missed something important.

I'm a little confused about the picture files. Do I delete the default and THEN copy the .jpg files?

Personally, I watch all my games(as GM-only). It really adds to the overall feeling of the game, because you get to know your team on a player-by-player and performance-by-performance basis. I've found that to be really hard to attain when you just browse through the box-scores after your games are simmed.

Though, I only watch extended highlights at normal speed. I definitly don't have the time to be watching full-length games.

I do the same, and agree with B. Stins-man. The 2-D, although has it's flaws, is a good way of getting a feel for the team and it's chemistry. You can clearly see players on "hot" and "cold" streaks and how each player fits into your lineup. I especially enjoy watching my youngsters perform on the ice.

I coach my games and watch extended highlights with normal speed.

I coach and watch all my games, on extended mode highligths and normal speed, it really gives you a feel of a real hockey game. I really enjoy when I can concentrate on the game, and even imagine post-game interviews, some off-ice drama when there's injuries, trades, retirements, etc.

Kind of nerd, I know I just thinks it takes the most of the game

But, once in a while, I guess I'm not on the mood and just set the general manager options to not watch the games.

If you play a lower league, the unscrambled database is a must.

I prefer to play the games rather than sim, but I am not very good at "reading" the action so I guess it's more for the fun of it. I guess I don't see as much point to it only with simming. But other people have different preferences.

I like to play them with "Key Only" highlights and keep on watching SOG and other related stats to figure if I need to change my tactics.
In my opinion the "Extended Highlights" take too much time to watch each game.

I sim games myself, I don't know much about tactics, so I tend to keep my head out of it. What you might consider doing is starting off as an NHL team, to get the feel of the game, before heading into the lower leagues. Just pick a team and figure the game out, don't take your first few seasons serious, but get a feel for the game, then go into the lower realms of hockey and work up from there.

I still have the original database. Probably after I finish up with what I am doing now, I'll start over and with a new database.

I play them out, either in full or highlights depending on importance of game.

Yes.

I use to watch and coach the games however as I started to use the NHL more the regular season is so long that it takes so much time so I just got into the habit of just simming games.

I started coaching and watching full games. Pretty soon, I went to not coaching but watching the game on Fast Forward. Next, I am not coaching and not watching the games (but not quick sim. I can still go back and see the full details of each goal, etc). Recently, I am not coaching but watching extended highlights on normal half the time.

The problem I have is the amount of goals scored (esp. by dmen) is not consistent amount these. Even not coaching, I still see a lot more goals scored when I watch the games (quite often 7-9) compared to just sim(mostly 5). Most of the time, I'll see my 3rd line get at least 1 goal in the game that I watch and they have 8 or 9 rating. When I don't watch the games, they'll do nothing and get a 6 or 7 rating. dmen is totally the other way around, they score when I don't watch and can get assist at best when I am watching.

I guess that's realistic in a way. When your boss is watching, forwards attack harder and dmen don't take chances as often.
