Trade close to deadline

I´m curios about the trade deadline. It seems like the salarycap isn´t the same when you trade close to the deadline. Maybe it´s just me that have missed something essential in the rulebook or what. When you make a big trade close to the deadline, dosen´t the new players wage count to the cap then?

AFAIK, it does, but not in its entirety. When you trade for a player mid-season, you're only responsible for part of his salary. If halfway into the season you trade for a guy who makes $5 million a year, your cap hit will be $2.5 million for that season.

Kekkonen is right. And it's not only at the deadline, but anytime during the season. So if you're let's say 35% into the season, you will be charged of 65% of the cap hit of the guy you acquire (as there's still 65% of the season to be done).

That's why you see so much trades occuring on deadline day (at least in real life). The best players have a lesser cap hit for the teams who acquire them, making them very attractive. Plus, it gives a better opportunity to deals with high-earning players for prospects and/or picks, trades that would be harder to make at any other time of the season.

Just keep in mind, this doesn't work so well in 05.

I noticed in my games that when I save the game on trade deadline day that when I load it back up I have somehow managed to miss the trade deadline.

I am a fairly meticulous player of the game, and I try to always get the best trades (who doesn't?) so often I end up saving on trade deadline day because I run out of time before I have to run off to work or bed. Has anyone else experienced this?

Trade deadline day seems to be buggy. It gives you the notice after the deadline is already up. Make sure your trades go through on the day before or earlier or you're out of luck.

Yup! Also, when your big salary guy are on IR, this also increase your cap margin. So you have a nice buffer zone to sign free-agent big name for pennies or trading in the later half of the season :D
