How does this work? I tried it in my last game when a position was opened up and I wanted to switch teams. I went from winning the cup 3 years running to not being able to land a job with a horrible team. They went with some GM from a minor league.

Is there a way to force your way onto the team without restarting with a new career?

Nope, not without restarting your career. You can either start a new game and make yourself GM of that team, add a new GM in your current game and make yourself GM of that team, or keep your game and your GM and just keep applying for jobs.
