Asterisk Beside Name?

Hi,
I tried to do a search before I posted this but came up with nothing.
How come in the roster page, a player will have a * beside their name? Maybe I'm just slow for not picking it up on my own but I have no clue why there's a * beside some players names...

Three players will have asterisks. Those are your players with the highest reputation.

Does anyone else think that the * symbols are based on reputation more than skills?

Yes; The asterisk is for the three most popular players on the team.

Sorry, my bad. Noticed that after I had written that... I think it would be more useful if top 3 players by stats were marked with these

Wow I never knew this. I always thought it signified the captain and two alternate captains, which didn't make sense considering they weren't always who I selected for those positions.
