EHM The Blue Line

Playing as the Utah Grizzlies, I was looking for a goaltender to back up Morrison. I have had decent results with Joel Martin in the past so i figured I would look him up. I met his contract demands and sent him an offer, which he rejected. I upped the offer a bit, even offering more in a signing bonus. Still no go.

He was never signed by anyone once the season started so I offered him a tryout...and he accepted? So I got around the contract thing by offering him tryouts when ever his tryout agreement ended.
Iis this some weird bug where a player will not sign with a team but play there anyway on a tryout basis?

While playing in the ECHL I often use this tactic with players that want too much money
