Hi

I am new to ice-hockey, I have just started getting into it through Channel Five's coverage. I have three questions which I wonder if anyone could answer.

1) What happens to the NHL when the Olympics are on and all those players are away playing for their countries? Does the season have a break or just carry on with reserves playing instead?

2) Why is there no GB team in the Olympics? I presume we didn't qualify.

3) Is there a weekly or monthly magazine about ice-hokcey that you can buy? I have looked in WH Smith's with no luck.

1. The NHL takes a break during the Olympics, since all the premier players are going to be representing their respective countries.

2. I can't remember the last time England had an Olympic hockey team. It's probably been a LONG time.

3. If you can get it, The Hockey News comes out every week. It's almost entirely NHL material, but it does report stats and such from minor leagues and international leagues.

The guys have answered the first two questions so I'll try to answer your third one.

There did used to be a British hockey magazine that I used to buy (I've forgotten the name now) but they disappeared after about a year. I used to get that from WH Smiths.

I'm not aware of any British magazines but I haven't checked for a while. As a result, it may be that you're restricted to getting a subscription to an imported North American magazine. I guess if you're a casual reader then it wouldn't be worth the expense. As they're imported, they cost a heck of a lot. Take a look at these subscriptions at TA-Sports. Also, if you can find Barker's Worldwide Publishing (I think that's the name) then you can get a subscription to The Hockey News - but it's about £150 per year.

As for keeping up to date on hockey news without having a subrscription to anything my favorite place to get news is http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/

I find the actual offfical nhl.com site to be a bit clunky and not great with news and/or opinions really. I far prefer TSN for news and boxscores (though espn.com's boxscores are quite good as well) and they have a great players section with bios of players in an alphabetical list. Hope that helps!

http://www.powerplaymagazine.com/ is the link for a (the only) UK hockey magazine. It's usually sold around most rinks during games or you can order it through the website.

Yeah, Powerplay was the one I used to buy. Though, I remember it being monthy back then
