Question about signing players

My question is relatively simple, when signing or re-signing a player, will the ever accept less than their asking price? I'm new to the game and was just curious if players ever sign for less than they ask for, my only experience with the game is in the OHL, where everyone makes the same, so I haven't had to negotiate much of anything.

Players will typically sign for less for their "favorite team" or for a team they have played for before. I've seen some players sign with other teams for as much as $2M less than what I was offering. Often times younger players or career minor league players will sign for less.

I often get players for a significant amount less than they ask for. This is especially true when my team is successful.

Old players would likely take less money too. In my game with the Nordiques, Foote is 38 years old I think and I've been able to sign him with a reduction of 1.5 millions of what he was asking first.
