I just thought something that would be pretty cool would be the chance to take over teams fro many year in the past...I.E the 80's Oilers or 50's Habs. We could use hockey reference for the rosters and maybe a way to figure out the attributes.

Well, since the database is gonna be user generated... I see no reason why you can't just start working on it yourself once the editor is released... I'm planning on getting to that 94-95 "patch" I've been putting off forever myself, so if you wanna, feel free to do a 80 something patch yourself...

Once the database structure has been released there is no need to wait for an editor since any SQLite editor will do and there are plenty of them available.

I am sure there are several aspects of the game that differs from today's nhl so ideally we can find a way to incorporate the possiblity of tweaking this aswell so it fits the database. But I am no expert on this so someone who watched NHL back in the old days could probably tell what should be tweakable; more goals, fighting?

Actually, when talking about the 80's, depending on how solid you manage to get the core engine, very little tweaking should be required, if any at all... It's really all up to the database maker to get right. Mostly the differences between now and then would be; less skilled goalies, less disciplined defenders (and defensive play across the board really) and smaller sample base of player, both due to less people playing hockey back then and quality hockey training was hard to come by, even in Canada, and most of the European players stayed in Europe... This made for a much more uneven league... But all these things I think should be possible to do in database only... Maybe just have a slider or something for general offensive/defensive minded less within the league...

There are also quite a few rules that were and were not in effect back then. I believe the Two-Line Pass was illegal in the 80s, head shots weren't so looked down upon, there was no Trapezoid behind the goalie, no shootouts, icing restricted line changing, and impeding with the stick was common.

So, I'm not really sure how you're structuring leagues, Dabo, but as long as you implement a wide variety of rule selections that are easily turned on/off for any league, these "historic databases" should be easy to make.

I'm really liking this thread The thought of playing a 1980's or 70's or even a 60's game just makes me drool bigtime

I believe we have a pretty comprehensive set of rules in the database but I think a few more rules need to be added. Will have a look when I get home.

As an amateur history studier of sorts (very cautious to use the term "historian" as that entails some lofty expectations), I could certainly be of help for some attributes if this pipe dream (however interesting) were to come to fruition. I can provide pretty detailed analysis of play style and rules (as some were mentioned, pretty accurately, earlier in the thread). I can probably do a fair number of USSR players as well and maybe some of the top Finns, Swedes and Czechs...I would struggle mightily with lower-tier players on these teams, I will admit.

I bring the latter up because the pinnacle of those games would be...
