Determining Offence/Defensive/Goal Tending Ability [EHM2005]

To track the development of my players I decided to make an excel file. I eventually expanded it to include current roster players and prospects. Anyway I decided to make 3 categories to help me determine how good a player is, offense, defense and overall. By breaking it down this way it tells me which role a player should be in and if they belong in the NHL/AHL or other minor league system. This is what I have as far as determining each category, but I was wondering which attributes I am missing.

Offensive Ablilty-Creativity, Flair, Deflections, Deking, Getting Open, Passing, Slapshot, Stickhandling, Wristshot
Defensive Ability-Checking, Hitting, Pokecheck, Positioning
Overall-Acceleration, Agility, Balance, Speed, Stamina, Strength, Aggression, Anticipation, Bravery, Creativity, Determination, Flair, Infulence, Teamwork, Work Rate, Checking, Defelections, Deking, Hitting, Getting Open, Passing, Pokecheck, Positioning, Slapshot, Stickhandling, Wristshot

This Is what I use to calculate how good a goalie is. I also know I am missing a couple of things. As far as the difference between goal tending ability and overall I consider Goal Tending Ability how good the goalie really is at just playing goal, Goal Tending Overall is including intangibles.

Goal Tending Ability-Blocker, Glove, Pokecheck, Positioning, Rebound Control, Recovery, Reflexes
Goal Tending Overall-Acceleration, Agility, Balance, Speed, Stamina, Strength, Aggression, Anticipation, Bravery, Creativity, Determination, Flair, Infulence, Teamwork, Workrate, Blocker, Glove, Passing, Pokecheck, Positioning, Rebound Control, Recovery, Reflexes, Stickhandling

In addition I have not started it yet but I was thinking of making two more categories. Physical ability and player development. Physical abilities will be basically how good of an athlete a player is without including hockey skills. I basically wanted a category like this because I know speed/agility/ect are important but they don't really fit into offense/defense. While player development is how likely a player is to develop to his full potential.

Physical Ability-Acceleration, Agility, Speed, Balance
Player Development-Determination, Workrate

Can anyone help me as far as telling me what I am missing from each category, or tell me which attributes I shouldn't have in a category. Some categories such as defensive, I know I am really missing a lot of stats, while offensive ability I think I am only missing one or two things.

Ps if you help out Im willing to share the excel file.

An interesting idea! I think that an exel file to track player development already exists somewhere. I honestly don't understand exactly what you are trying to achieve by splitting the attributes into 3 or 5 categories? You'd like to know if a player is better suited for a defensive OR offensive role due to his development in those key categories?

I really think that's an interesting approach, altough a bit time consuming if you have to update every player twice a year? However, I would really appreciate further explanation and possibly have a look at the exel sheet.

Here are my thoughts concerning the key attributes for either off/def:

Offensive Ablilty: Deflections, Deking, Getting Open, Passing, Slapshot, Stickhandling, Wristshot, Creativity,(Flair)

Defensive Ability: Checking, Hitting, Pokecheck, Positioning, Strength, Anticipation

Physical Ability Acceleration, Agility, Speed, Balance, (Strength)

Menatal, not changing: Aggression, Bravery, Determination, Flair, Work Rate

Menatal, changing: Anticipation, Creativity, Influence, Teamwork

I would suggest a column displaying how many points a certain player earned in the different categories to see where he could need development or on which training regimen he is progressing the most, i.e.:

Robyn Regehr, defensive D-man: 15 points overall from 1. July 2007 to 1.July 2008 - 4 points physical, 2 pts mental, 6 points defensive abb., 3 pts off.
then you could compare him to an offensive minded D-man and see the difference in their development, even though they had the same regimen throughout the season....

Nice idea, hopefully this input is of any use for you :dunno:
Good luck developing!
