Help, I am confused

I've been managing the Peterborough Petes for the past 4 years in game. When I took over the team was rubbish. It was filled with marginal talent and seemingly worthless lines. I forget which database I am using but, it would be the one that was the most recent for last year's season. My second OHL draft was filled with kids who had green attributes everywhere so, basing a team around those kids was easy. I naturally won the Mem Cup with the drafted team.
Here lies my issue.
Many of these players have moved on to the pros now and my subsequent drafts (after winning the cup) have been filled with players that all of my scouts seem to praise but, who's stats just don't seem impressive. I have built a team with the most talented players in my organization (as in, they have the best stats all around, most are 17 year olds.) My assistants and my scouts say that my team should feature many of these draft picks who's stats are BS compared to the 17 year olds on my team.
Are there hidden attributes that I cannot see that will make the not so talented 16 year olds play better than the older, higher stat players on my team? Why do my assistants constantly badger me about these "rubbish" 1st and 2nd round draft picks being "key players" for my team?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
