EHM1 Regen Testing (2016)

Post by nino33 » Tue Jul 12, 2016 4:55 am

I've done some significant "regen testing" this year - first in January, then in March, and now in July
I'm going to post my previous data first for comparison purposes......

January 2016 - Regen Testing
nino33 wrote:For the last couple weeks I've been running a long term sim, with almost every League on Enhanced, Full Database, and Full Detail Sim; currently the sim is in the year 2033. I've used the EHM:EA Assistant to export the player Attribute details into sortable spreadsheets

The primary thing I was wanting to look at was "what is the PA quality of the future/regen players?"
The primary "standard for comparison" was/is the current database, at the start of a new game.

So, the first data tables I'm posting right now looks at the TBL 8.1 database at startup.
The PAs of those players under age 23 are of course "variable" and so this particular distribution is a single (hopefully representative) example; those players over age 23 almost always have "set" PAs (and so the distribution is more researcher controlled).

I'm interested in looking at things by Nation, Player Role and/or Position.....when/if I have time

To make sorting/compiling the data easier I used Birth Year rather than Draft Year.
Across the top is the Birth Year and then the player age, down the left column is the PA distribution (from 100-200 in blocks of 10).

Here's what TBL 8.1 looks like at startup......

nino33 wrote:It seems that the new regen system is such that if not the same PA being reused it's pretty close...at least with Top players (seems there's no chance of a "lower" PA player ever getting a Top PA, and Top PAs repeat themselves like they did in EHM 05/07)

Below is the retirement year and player age at retirement for all of the players with a PA of 170-200, all the players with a -10 PA and a bunch of players with the -9 PA (I was going to do all the -9 players, but the pattern's already well established without additional data)

Virtually every Top player plays into his 40s!
Those that don't play into their very late 30s

I have the test sim still going, currently in the fall of 2036; I used it to look up the players
After the player's name is the retirement year, and in brackets is age at retirement

Jake Allen – 2031 (age 41)
Jamie Benn – 2031 (age 42)

I don't understand why the HOF sometimes includes international seasons and sometimes doesn't (like Kovalchuk's time in the KHL isn't counted, but Rask's time in the Austrian League is).
Some players "can't be found ingame" in June of their last year, maybe because they played outside of NA and their season ended/they'd retired already

EHM1 Regen Testing (2016)

March 2016 - Regen Testing

As always, testing was done with all Leagues on Enhanced and Full database/Full Detail
Previous testing results from January 2016 were with version 1.0

The original test (in January) did not have added players/juniors
The original test showed birth years 2000-2010 resulted in
- 0 players with a 190-200 PA
- 1 players with a 180-189 PA
- 8 players with a 170-179 PA

The first test above (with players/juniors added) shows
- 12 players with a 190-200 PA
- 24 players with a 180-189 PA
- 65 players with a 170-179 PA

The second test above (with players/juniors added) shows
- 13 players with a 190-200 PA
- 23 players with a 180-189 PA
- 61 players with a 170-179 PA

This high number of 170-200 PA players over an eleven year span (101 in test one, 97 in test two) is not seen in the players aged 18-29 at start-up (57 players) nor is it seen in the years that follow 2010 (only 35 such players in test two)

For a decade or so it seems generational talent has now become yearly talent!

- 30 players with a 170-179 PA

Test 5 (without players/juniors added) shows

The most recent testing shows similar results, the initial influx of talent is not repeated (and also, it seems that the PAs are recycled/reused for "regens" as they were in EHM07)

It seems choosing "not" to add players/juniors still adds some, just not as many.....
Maybe it's just adding juniors that does this, and not players too, I'm not sure...

nino33 wrote:For a decade or so it seems generational talent has now become yearly talent!
This is most definitely the case! :-o

A couple others things I sorta noticed but didn't look into further (lack of time).....I noticed an old Corey Perry playing overseas at a CA level below the NHL average and thought "I can see it for Europeans/Russians, but I don't think North American former NHL stars/superstars are going to play in Europe/Russia in their old age).....

And I noticed the "excessive quality" of some of the old guys in test 5 - in 2045 41 year old Finn Petteri Pennanen has a CA/PA of 198/200, 40 year old Czech Simon Vejvoda has a CA/PA of 198/198, 43 year old American Timmy Aiken has a CA/PA of 180/196, 43 year old American Jason Richards has a CA/PA of 180/180, 39 year old Czech Marco Senkerík has a CA/PA of 175/175, etc (not all the old guys with high PAs still have high CAs, but many do...but 42 year old Canadian has a CA/PA of 149/197, 39 year old American Aran Gorowsky has a CA/PA of 136/172, etc)

RIZ - It seems all players retire by age 43 (no chance for a Chris Chelios or Gordie Howe it seems).....is this intended?

July 2016 - Regen Testing

I've got two tests going right now
- one with no players/staff added at start-up
- one with all possible "add players/staff" chosen at start-up

But the numbers seem odd to me...the test with no one added has 50,163 players and the test with all players added has only 52,154 players - I expected the test with all players added to have more than 1991 players added, but perhaps not...
EDIT - I was never comfortable with this weirdness, and have found out that the data had not exported properly and/or wasn't "cleaned up" (by me) properly.....and after many hours today I've found/fixed the issues! The EHM Assistant is a fabulous tool, and I'm so thankful to have it for testing, but there's issues with the exporting [some things cause the columns to not line up properly (for example, players whose name includes Jr. & the team name Saint-Georges COOL FM 103.5), and sometimes it seems columns are overwritten, and other similar oddities (the four columns of Club Playing-Division Playing-Club Contracted-Division Contracted seem to cause issues sometimes and result in columns getting mixed up)].....it sure adds to the effort required!...another example, the column for DOB shows Birth Year but if you scroll down it also shows actual full DOBs and so you have to use a Text Search of "Contains" the Birth Year you want, you can't just select the Birth Year

The player numbers oddity is no more, as "no one added" has 40,607 (not 50,163) and "all players added" was/is correct at 52,154

I'll probably run another test or two in the future (at least one with added players), but it takes about two weeks of around the clock simming to sim 20+ years into the future, so it won't be happening anytime soon! Currently one save is in September 2018 and the other in December 2019
I've got the "all players added" save up to 2025, and the "no one added" is now in 2024, so the plan is once I get the "no players added" startup (2015) data compiled/posted I'll get to compiling/posting the 2025 data soon after (and thanks to Primis, who's helping out by running a "Add Junior Players" test!)

I'm also looking at more than just player PA now!...I'm looking at CA too & I'm looking at PA by Nation too

Here's the initial/start-up results (As always, testing was done with all Leagues on Enhanced and Full database/Full Detail)...

Test 1 at startup - no players/staff added
Deleted to be reviewed/corrected, to be reposted soon

Test 2 at startup - players/staff added
Deleted/reviewed to ensure accuracy, to be reposted right away!

Utmost respect for the research you are doing! It is a very interresting read and will most liekly change my contract negotiation tactics in-game, especially regarding older players.

Wow! Fantastic research here, Nino. It certainly shows very clearly some areas that require attention/tweaking.

I feel like skating should have a bigger impact on CA...I think this would help "deteriorate" star players when they get older more effectively. The bottom line in the NHL, at least, is if your skating falls below a certain point - your other attributes become relatively moot. If you can't keep up with the speed of play (and aren't one of those very rare man-mountain players or an enforcer) - you're going to be of extremely little value. You may still be able to throw a big check, you may still be able shoot really, really hard but if you can't move at NHL speed - you'll have a hard time staying in the game.

In that regard - the deterioration of the skating attributes actually seems really accurate, it appears in many cases it's just not accompanied by a significant decrease in CA...which leads to 42 year-old former stars still retaining high CA and top roles on teams despite skating ratings in the 3, 4, 5 range. And you still have, IMO, team rosters with an average age that is way to high. I think if you compare the average age of an NHL team (probably in the 26-27 range...just guessing) to the average EHM NHL squad age say 10 years into the game, you'll find it much higher. Loaded with 30+ year-olds seemingly. Nino - I'm sure you may have looked at that. The other thing that star players that don't have declining CA does is it makes it hard for younger players with high PA and developing CA to obtain important (scoring line) roles on teams. So then these younger guys end up developing with high CA but really low statistical output until much later in their careers. At least I have noticed this...

To broaden the discussion a bit...I feel like the game would be improved if there was a way to make the skating attributes and mental attributes (anticipation, decision making, determination) have a higher net value in the CA. IMO, whether you are a young prospect or an aging star, these are the fundamental attributes that will have a disproportionate affect on your ability to progress (or stay in) the game of hockey.

Or...going off into fantasy land here...but what would be ideal is to be able to tailor important attribute levels for each league. So for the NHL, for example, if you had skating attributes less than oh say, just spit-balling, an '8' - despite having a great skill set, the game would limit your ability to have an impact and the CPU GM's would recognize this keep you lower on the depth chart. It could also make attributes like bravery and balance (attributes that let you withstand rough, physical NHL play) important while over in a European league, less emphasis would be placed on those and more on the skating attributes for the larger rink sizes.

This would allow a guy like say Brad Kozun or Linus Omark - too small and finesse oriented to make an NHL impact but in actuality, much more skilled than a lot of NHL'ers - to be rated accurately but still be a long-shot to be effective in the NHL.

It would also allow a prospect like Sean Day, who is a fantastic skater, has great size and physical tools but poor decision making - to have a high PA but only a small chance to make an NHL impact unless his mental attributes develop.

Again - I know this is fantasy land stuff at the moment but it is the kind of customization that would make for a much more intricate and realistic game! :-D

I think that you're underrating the effect the reputation has in the game. I think that, while it has improved since 07 and since the early EA stage, players gain reputation but don't lose it as quick enough in most of cases.

IMO your assessment of his talent is way off
If the NHL game was as slow as it is in Europe/Russia, with as little physical contact/defense played, you'd be surprised how many NHLers are as talented as Omark

When the game is much faster, with less time to react, Omark not only can't show his talent but can't play the (defensive) NHL game either

3rd and 4th line NHLers can look amazing in practice, but can't do the same things offensively when the game is much faster and people are actually playing defense/checking

To me the KHL (which I've watched for a few years now) looks more like ringette than hockey
I'm not saying it's better or worse as entertainment (better probably), but they're not even the same game (3rd/4th line NHLers can be top scorers in the KHL! in fact a guy who couldn't produce in the AHL has the KHL most goals in a season record.....the bigger ice and style of play makes the speed of the game in the offensive zone as slow or slower than an NHL practice)

The general idea that Europeans/Russians have "skill/talent" and North Americans don't is simply not true IMO
And there are players that are "to small/finesse" players in the NHL now! Omark was simply wasn't good enough to do what he does quick enough to be an NHL player, so he's not one of them

Have a look at stats of lockout players in the KHL... Jeoffrey Lupul, Evander Kane, even goalies as Pekka Rinne were embarrassing...
But I guess the euro vs NA players is an endless argument. And adaptation really plays a big role

Well, just open a saved game and you'll see that average age is around 30 years in most leagues, especially after 4-5 seasons...

I wasn't comparing European/Russian players with North American players.
I was comparing "Leagues" (play styles) and pointing out that players not good enough for North America can be stars in Europe/Russia (regardless of what country they're from!), while players not good enough for European/Russian Leagues won't even make the NHL, let alone be stars

The lockout players are a bad example. Many players didn't really care about how they played and only played in Europe for fun.
There were solid NHLers that played badly in the Swedish Allsvenskan for example

This is why NHL players should be banned to join European teams in case of lockout.
Some players were excellent (Malkin, Ovechkin, Kulyomin, etc.) but most of them were absolutely terrible.
