MasonCooper and MWE, you're making me quite jealous. I recently picked up EHM again after first buying it a few months back and have started a game as the Cardiff Devils. Preaseason games went well, but so far the season has been mediocre. I'm 2-3-1 in the first couple weeks of the EIHL/BCC. I'm chalking a lot of it up to my general inexperience both with EHM and with hockey in general. Hopefully things will improve as I figure out how to work tactics a bit more.
You guys got any advice for running a team in the EIHL? My plan starting out was to strengthen my roster's selection of British players, which I've had decent success with. However, given the quality of UK hockey players, perhaps this was a mistake to focus on (I've yet to sign a single new import, though I've been scouting the AHL/ECHL/European leagues). I'm guessing it might be wiser to concentrate on quality import signings and stick to just playing 3 lines, as "4 line hockey" seems to be a rarity in the real EIHL (based on some light research).
I'm especially thinking I should consider a replacement for Ben Bowns, sure he's a pretty good British Goalie, but that just means he's "average" and so far has an 89% save rate, not great.
Still, I'm having fun and am only likely to improve! I've also watched a few Cardiff Devils games on youtube, just to see the real deal in action.

Re: How's it going in EHM:EA? What team are you?
I'd look at getting a decent goalie coach in for Bowns. Coaching seems to be a real issue as British coaches don't seem to be rated and the game just assigns random values to them. He should come good given good coaching and plenty of ice, I've had good results bringing in a decent netminding coach (either from canada or europe) with good 'Coaching goalies' 'Technique' and 'Determination'. Had Jordan Hedley develop loads for me with MKL in a previous database and similar for Jordan Marr this year. British netminding coach though? No luck.Galaga Galaxian wrote:MasonCooper and MWE, you're making me quite jealous. Otherwise I'd really look at who you're teaming up line-wise. I've found that sometimes playing all the best players on the same line doesn't equate to that line being productive. Don't know Cardiff's personel that well though?
As for 3-line hockey; with me playing as Milton Keynes I tend to have 4 lines, but only play the top 3. My 4th line is my 'youth' line, they get ice if we've got a comfortable lead, or if there are any injuries they'll get promoted to one of the top 3 lines as cover.

Re: How's it going in EHM:EA? What team are you?
I go for 4 lines usually I have 14 imports (1 spare) most of which I usually pick up in July unless I see someone decent has been released by an EIHL rival. I currently have a squad of 22 so 8 are brits I only usually sign brits from the youth team when they get promoted to me.Galaga Galaxian wrote:MasonCooper and MWE, you're making me quite jealous. first things first decide on a play style. (for starters if you can set up in a neutral zone trap, good things have tended to happen (with both the panthers and the avs in the nhl))
I also predicated my scouting on speedy players (if its good enough for the pens to win the Stanley cup its good enough for me) and ive signed a bunch of young talented british players. (seriously there are a ton of generated cracking british talent on my save)
watch the epihl (the one below the elite league), I discovered a player there called sam duggan, unsure if he is real or not, but he had 50 points in 54 games, and I signed him and he put up 40 in 44 games.
if you sign promising british talent that are 16/17 send them on loan to the Manchester phoenix or the hull pirates, (both epihl) those teams do not have any team affliated to them to move those players on. seriously, I loaned a player to Peterborough and he is still the leading goalscorer in the league this season and he got moved down to their under 18 side I think...
I'm lucky I'm the panthers and as such are loaded and can/could afford to do a season with 50 players signed.... so be aware of your financial situation.
my advice, in tactics find the tab to set team to neutral zone trap, and click it and leave it, then get to know your players, go get yourself some coaches, some scouts, keep an eye when you click on the coach to check their style of play.
other notes..
1. foreign release clauses are the bane of my existence
2. player option years are awesome, they stop any payrises for players, they stay on for another year,
3. there are tons and tons of top quality positional coaches out there, go and find them.
4. likewise with scouts, there are literal tons and tons of really good ones.
5. tons and I mean tons of nhlers have ended up in Europe... cam Talbot, eric gelinas, ryan murray, Patrick eaves, brad Richards, pavelec,
6. upgrade your training facilities often.
7. april through august, play lots and lots of friendlies vs your teams main rivals. not too many mind. but its an easy money making opportunity because you have literally zero expenses at times.
8. there are two main free agency dumps, (as in when everyone hits free agency from different leagues) the eihl hits free agency essentially may 1st. two months later is when the nhl, ahl and echl dump their players.
9. most importantly have fun.
I don't watch the majority of my matches, nor do I coach them.

as the panthers I always have had the full 4 lines of offense and defense.
weirdly enough sometimes not everyone plays and its bugs me.
my tip for a goalie coach is dave prior.

the Cardiff devils have two teams in the league below the epihl, id use them a lot for your youth prospects actually. then the best ones id send into the epihl if they aren't ready for the elite league

Well, Started with ´nucks knowing that gonna have very difficult time with the lenghty NTC contracts, managed to get to playoffs in the first season tho.
got #26 pick in the 2016 draft. Chose this guy https://1drv.ms/i/s!AnofmodO0vuEg0jN20WnIQ4iBu6g
Next 4-5 seasons, i was really struggling (one nightmare of a season, i was dead last) the re-build was real. Was constantly trying different guys among my youngsters, dissing players who didn´t "fit" <- My strategy with the players is, if they have a rating 7 and over, i usually keep ´em, and i´m really strict when it comes to certain attributes.
Tried to get Stamkos, couldn´t...
Had Jamie Benn, for a long time. Solid consistent production
Crosby visited for couple seasons in my line-up. at age 33-35. this game is brutal when it comes to aging players...
Fast forward to where i´m now 2029, had some success, and my core is once again getting older

´nucks fans know, Boeser, Virts, Cassels...
How Boeser has played you ask? https://1drv.ms/i/s!AnofmodO0vuEg0sC_sdNn2reReOe 2nd line RW is knocking on he´s spot tho...
What about Virts? https://1drv.ms/i/s!AnofmodO0vuEg0yPOOOwtHOEp3jP
Cassels is my super-reliable PK man.
Max Jones became a monster, #26 pick.

In other notes, you never know when and where young´uns can hit their stride, especially goalies (who watched the RL draft?
)
In this game tho, it´s attributes and report cards which i trust, and i think you need to stick with your own tactics, slowly slotting players in...Rebuilding is a pain.

Took over the Coyotes at the end of the first season.
The only trade I made was the Mike Smith one (dumping salary to make space for Free Agents)

Heres the draft picks for me. Matthews went #3

Re: How's it going in EHM:EA? What team are you?
Indeed! Now that I'm out the other side of a draft and free agency I think I have a much better handle on the game. There is more to learn but I'm not fumbling around in the dark as much or wasting nearly as much time. I found the learning curve to the game fairly steep but it's quite dynamic.peachesgp wrote:Yeah picking up 3 teams for your first game is probably a bit much, but it's a good way to learn too.Kersus wrote:Halfway through my first season with the Habs and also running the IceCaps and Beast.
The Beast are doing terrible, the IceCaps were doing well but have fallen out of playoff contention.
The Habs started awful but are now 5th in their conference.
Hunting for a better coach. Plekanac leading the team along with Greening (who I picked up). Having trouble resigning John Scott.
This is my first playthrough and I probably took on too much.
Habs made the playoffs but didn't win. The Beast made a crazy run right up until the end missing the playoffs by a single point. Simply too many overtime loses. The IceCaps won the Calder. So, it wasn't an all around success but I set the margin high for the AHL team.
One of the mistakes I made was not signing a couple draft picks before the transfer window and now I have to wait until next year. I also probably signed Stamkos to a deal that will be difficult to work around, especially since he keeps getting injured.
So, I think my pro team has improved slightly, the farm is a little weaker, however the ECHL should be much stronger now that I understand contracts better and have some room to sign some decent players.

Re: How's it going in EHM:EA? What team are you?
So I finally get a change to settle down and play my first game in EHM1.
(after years of editing databases)
Now that our 1998 database is out I thought I would give it a go.
But I made a little tweak. Change the Jets to Hornets and changed their colour. Nothing else needed! + logo
So I've took freeagents and waiver guys to start this franchise with.. next year many euro players will join.
Only did one trade so far. Bylsma for a 3rd round pick.

Of course, you go 3-1 down to a stacked team with Holtby, Backstrom and Ovechkin all having outstanding Playoffs, then this happens..

I had Boulton but traded him for a pick. Same as my "fake" Goalie Zenobi. I will probably trade away D.Sedin to CBJ as they have H.Sedin so they can be together.Primis wrote:Pretty similar, yeah. My goalies are Hebert (a cheap trade), Khabibulin (a *not* cheap trade) and Thomas (FA) though. Hebert was good, then his play went off a cliff and I can't move him because of his contract. So I'm rolling with Thomas and Khabibulin platooning, with Hebert has a 3rd on-roster until I can find a way to move him. I have Halpern and Boulton on NHL roster, if that tells you anything about depth differences, and while you just have Pahlsson still unsigned, I have him playing in NHL already along with Toni Lydman.
Your roster is definitely better/deeper, outside of goal. I have Tarasov in the AHL, plus Ryan Miller and Niklas Backstrom as prospects. Zetterberg, Andrew Hutchinson, and Ryan Malone were my first draft class. Your top dman is Schneider, mine is only Rafalski. Halpern is my 2C, where you have Nieuwendyk, etc.
I'm trying hard to stay young as possible still and not get *too* many vets. I also should give up on trying to trade for/acquire young plaers and just stockpile some draft picks I guess.
Martin St. Louis was a HUGE disappointment for me. He can't even contribute much in the ECHL and basically won't develop at all.

I've played 12 game into season 2. Only 3 wins so far, but it's better than my first year. PP & SH are really struggling.. And Nieuwendyk is one of my worst players (12 GP, 2+0, 6.25 AVG)

I'm trading away depth players for usually 2 picks, so I can get more depth into this team. I have 11 picks for the 2000 draft.

Re: How's it going in EHM:EA? What team are you?
I'm in the year 1999/2000 playing with the maple leafs and I'm happy to announce that I have Tie Domi, Stu Grimson, Rob Ray, and Tony Twist all on my team. Though 1 of them typically is a healthy scratch each game but they are all there to protect my stars. Step one completed. step 2: Draft, develop and/or sign some stars. I'm kicking myself over trading Kilger for Tony Twist...I knew it was a bad idea but i couldn't help myself
(Kilger 10 games, 8 points and 7.5 AVR...Twist 7 games 2 points and 6.71 AVR). Just like the real GMs, you get caught up in the moment of the trade deadline
I picked up Halpern, Rafalski, Tim Thomas, Vjorny, Cechmanek, and J.Blake in my first season too, CJ! It's nice to know the future
Rafalski's going for the Calder. I also drafted Aki Berg with a late pick as much as I didn't like him back in the day
