Computers and I have a rather compicated relation (I like them, but they don't like me... So then, I have a question about using Nel Maynards eminent editor (both EHM -04 and -05)
How is current and potential ability counted? For example, when i look at a rantom players details, I may see something like "CA 105, PA -1".
What does that really mean?
I home I'm not annoying you compuer geniuses too much...

-1 Potential will be between 1-20 (the worst young players, they will likely retire at a young age and keep getting recycled back into the regen pool)
-2 Potential will be between 10-40
-3 Potential will be between 30-60
-4 Potential will be between 50-80
-5 Potential will be between 70-100
-6 Potential will be between 90-120
-7 Potential will be between 110-140 (quite rare – a good prospect with a decent chance of being a regular NHL player)
-8 Potential will be between 130-160 (rare – a top prospect with a good chance of being a talented NHL player)
-9 Potential will be between 150-180 (very rare – a top 10 prospect who is considered a can’t miss NHL talent)
-10 Potential will be between 170-200 (extremely rare – the top player available in a draft, but not every year)
-11 Potential will be between 20-80 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-12 Potential will be between 40-100 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-13 Potential will be between 60-130 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-14 Potential will be between 90-160 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-15 Potential will be between 110-190 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-16 Potential will be between 70-120
-17 Potential will be between 90-140
-18 Potential will be between 110-160
-19 Potential will be between 130-180
-20 Potential will be between 150-200
CA 105 means the player's current ability is 105
PA is his Potential Ability.
ADMIN NOTE: Updated 11-July-2021 to include EHM v1.5 potential ability values
Thanks! I'm really grateful for that, but there is still some question marks. If CA is 105, how does that affect a players attributes? Also, wasn't the PA system reworked for EHM 2005? If so, how was it in EHM -04?
Thanks in advance!
If the CA is 105, I believe it means that the average attribute will be around 10 or 11. There is always some variation when you start a new game, and some of the stats are unaffected by CA (things like Strength/Speed etc).
From memory, EHM04 was like the FM series, just -1 for good prospect or -2 for excellent prospect. EHM is now streets ahead of FM for PA ranges
The actual in game attribute is determined by the CA and attribute value
For example.
If a player has a slapshot attribute of 36 in saved game (I think that is about 13 in the pre game)
When his CA is around 120, it will show up as around 13 in game
when the CA goes up to say 170, in game may show is 17, 18 even thou when the attribute is still 36 in saved game.
On the other hand, the attribute itself may go up. Say the attribute in saved game editor goes up from 36 - 42.
The in game attribute might go from 13 - 14 even thou the CA did not change.
The attribute value is what goes up with training while CA goes up with experience.
The numbers are a just made up, but you get the general idea.
About draftee, i think they are around 80-100 at draft year.

Can anyone explain to me how the "Current Ability" and "Potential Ability" work exactly in the EHM Editor?
I know, that using a database to edit the "Potential Ability" is a negative number that displays a range of numbers in which the players potential will randomly be when starting a new league file. Using a later savegame there is shown an exact number in "Potential Ability".
My question: Is that number REALLY the maximum potential a player is able to reach?
Because I think I saw decreasing numbers of some players at some time... maybe because of age or wrong training? I also read in the training-thread, that players can be faster in developing, that's why their potential rating can be missleading at some time. Skills look as if they are heavily decreasing, but it just means that the player is making more than just good progress.
